On Saturday, UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen will engage in one of the most highly anticipated fights in MMA history.

Since suffering a fifth-round submission loss in his first bout against Silva, Sonnen has been selling a rematch as only he could. At UFC 148, all Sonnen’s trash talking will finally pay off in the form of a second chance at dethroning the greatest champion the sport has ever seen.

To add to the excitement for this fight card, UFC legend Tito Ortiz will step into the Octagon for the final time, as he plans to retire regardless of the fight’s outcome following his rubber match with Forrest Griffin. Ortiz and Griffin fought to close decisions in their first two meetings, with each competitor earning a split decision win over the other.

Additionally, Cung Le will return to the cage for a bout against Patrick Cote and Demian Maia will make his welterweight debut against Dong Hyun Kim. Recent featherweight title challenger Chad Mendes will also attempt to get back on a winning track against Cody McKenzie, who has decided to drop to 145 pounds.

To promote UFC 148, which will be held at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, a pre-fight press conference will be held on Tuesday at 2 p.m. ET. Event headliners Silva and Sonnen will likely join UFC president Dana White for the presser.

Video of the press conference will be streamed live on the above video player. After the presser, stay tuned to Bleacher Report MMA for all the latest on UFC 148 and the rest of your MMA needs.

Can Chael Sonnen Survive the 185-Pound Division If He Beats Anderson Silva?

Chael Sonnen is on the cusp of something big if he can unseat the 185-pound-title-holding Anderson Silva at UFC 148.

However, a win for “Uncle Chael” means a whole lot of pain from thereon in—he won’t able to survive the ensuing onslaught from the division’s top dogs.

Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown” will be a befitting idiom for the soi-disant “American Gangster” if he shocks the MMA world at the end of the night’s proceedings.

A former NCAA Division-l standout with a Greco-Roman pedigree, Sonnen has some exquisite wrestling credentials and good standup too boot, but that per se won’t be enough to ward off his contemporaries, some of whom boast identical strengths in the wrestling department, not to mention ever-improving striking.

In his last outing, Sonnen was unable to impose his will on Michael “The Count” Bisping, who, it must be said, gave a good account of himself, and could’ve easily been the victor that night.

If a rematch were to take place, it’s not a given that Sonnen would come out victorious.

Moving on to the rest of the snarling pack: Mark Munoz, Vitor Belfort, Alan Belcher, Tim Boetsch, Chris Weidman and Hector Lombard. Anyone of the aforementioned sextet have the sine qua non to trounce Sonnen, more so the latter duo.

Two-time All-American Weidman is the new kid on the block and is still improving. If he gets by Munoz, a shot at the title won’t be far behind.

Lombard has yet to prove himself on MMA’s grandest stage, but a win over Boetsch would silence any critics and thrust him smack-bang in the middle of the title mix, which spells bad news for Sonnen, as Lombard’s a beast.

That said, Munoz, Belfort, Belcher and Boetsch will also be a handful for the newly crowned 185-pound champion.

Hypothetical though it may seem, however, the realization is that these are the men that wait with bated breath if Chael Sonnen is able to capture the Holy Grail and assume the mantle of the division’s most wanted.

UFC 148 is scheduled for July 7, 2012, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Chael Sonnen and the 5 Greatest UFC Threats to Anderson Silva

Anderson Silva is already an all-time great, but in the middleweight division, five voracious, tiger-eyed cats lie in wait, ready to pounce at the slightest given opportunity.

They are the ones that pose the greatest threats to Silva’s tenure as the undisputed linchpin of the 185-pounders.

“The Spider” heads into UFC 148 to take on the perennial trash-talking Chael Sonnen in a matchup that has grabbed the imagination of both MMA connoisseurs and casual fans alike.

The highly projected fight for the ages will see Silva (31-4 MMA, 14-0 UFC) attempt a record 10th successive title defense and—if he can do so—elevate his status as the No. 1 pound-for-pound king to even loftier heights.

That being said, here’s a look at Silva’s quintet threat.

UFC 148: Dana White Admits Silva vs. Sonnen 2 Almost Didn’t Happen

Leading up to the official announcement of Anderon Silva vs. Chael Sonnen II, Sonnen flatly denied that the fight was going to take place. Most dismissed this as typical Sonnen mischief, but according to UFC President Dana White, there was some truth to the statements.

“When we did the press conference down in Brazil, Silva hadn’t even agreed to fight him,” White said in an interview with MMAjunkie.com. “That fight wasn’t happening. I had them bring Anderson to the place where the press conference was, and we sat in a room for three hours fighting about the fight.”

It’s common knowledge that Silva is not a fan of Sonnen—the man who has been bombarding him with trash talk for over two years—and that, if given the choice, he would be defending his UFC Middleweight Championship against someone else.

“(Silva wants to fight) anybody but Chael,” White said. “He thinks Chael is disrespectful and doesn’t deserve a shot at this title at all. So leading up to the press conference, it was delayed an hour because I was fighting with him in my room.”

As is now known, White was eventually able to get Silva to sign the contract for a second Sonnen fight, which will take place on July 7th, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Though the champion is not keen on the idea of fighting him a second time, it’s hard to deny that Sonnen has earned a rematch based on the way he was able to dominate Silva the first time around, as well as his victories over Brian Stann and Michael Bisping since then.

“My philosophy is always, if you don’t like it, handle it in the octagon,” White said. “You can’t say a guy doesn’t deserve it because you think he’s mean. He definitely deserves the rematch. More than anybody. It’s true. He’s the only guy who’s ever come close to beating him in the UFC.”

Chael Sonnen Says to End the Injury Crisis, Fighters Should Lose By Default

Chael Sonnen says the injury crisis which has ravaged almost every UFC event could easily be solved by the fighters losing by default.

“I think there should be forfeiture,” Sonnen told MMAjunkie.com.

It’s not realistic with the architecture that we have, but we’re the only sport where you can just not show up.

Every event is set. The Super Bowl for 2015. The kickoff time, the venue—it’s set. If one team doesn’t want to show up, a Super Bowl champion will be crowned that day.

My father was a plumber; I would never disrespect him by not showing up to an athletic competition that has a maximum duration of 25 minutes. I hear guys talking, ‘I pulled a hamstring.’ What does that have to do with anything? That’s a button off of my shirt. ‘Aw, I broke a finger—button fell off my shirt, let’s sew this back on.’ What possibly does it have to do with walking across the ring and beating a guy up? It’s ridiculous.

We have a Mike Tyson quote (he stole that from me): ‘The military is at war right now. A soldier gets confronted on the battlefield. He doesn’t say, “Get on a scale. You know, I’m not feeling good, can we reschedule this a week from now? That’s not real life, and if you give your word that you’re going to do something, you need to do it.

Whether Sonnen is right or wrong in his analysis is open for debate.

However, if a fighter is well and truly injured, there isn’t an awful lot the UFC bigwigs can do about it, especially since the promotion itself implemented a policy of insuring its fighters.

That said, here’s a quick look at the injured list that has plagued some of the major events of 2012.

Vitor Belfort was forced to scrap his highly anticipated rematch with Wanderlei Silva following a broken hand he sustained whilst training. The main event of UFC 147 was saved when Rich Franklin stepped in.

In a closely contested rematch, Franklin took home the honors for a second time via unanimous decision.

Former welterweight title contender Jon Fitch pulled out of UFC on FUEL TV 4, citing a knee injury, thus leaving the co-main event open for Kenny Robertson to take on his original opponent Aaron Simpson.

The long-awaited debut of former Bellator middleweight champion Hector Lombard at UFC on FOX 4 was thrown into disarray when his original opponent, former marine Brian Stann, suffered a shoulder injury. Lombard is now scheduled to face off against Tim Boetsch instead.

Chad Griggs’ 205-pound debut against Phil “Mr. Wonderful” Davis, also at UFC on FOX 4, was called off due to Griggs suffering an unrevealed injury.

The main event of UFC 149 between 145-pound kingpin Jose “Scarface” Aldo and Erick Koch was brought to a halt when Aldo incurred an injury.

In the same event, Thiago Silva was expected to lock horns with Mauricio Rua, but that hit skid row when Silva withdrew after suffering a back injury. “Shogun” is now expected to throw hands with Brandon Vera.

Furthermore, the jinxed card saw both Michael Bisping and Thiago Alves out of the mix due to undisclosed injuries. “The Count” was scheduled to fight Boetsch and “The Pitbull” Yoshihiro Akiyama, who himself was forced off the card due to injury.

Apropos UFC 148, Dominick Cruz tore an ACL, thus putting a spanner in the works for his trilogy matchup against Urijah Faber. The latter will now throwdown with Brazilian sensation Renan Barao.

This was an exhausting catalogue of mishaps if there ever was one.

The Oregon native took a pop at heavyweight titlist Junior dos Santos and archrival middleweight champion Anderson Silva whom he locks horns with in the main event of UFC 148.

His gripe with the two Brazilians stems from the fact that they felt the need to cite injuries following their respective victories. In Silva’s case, it was that rib injury of UFC 117 when Sonnen almost brought an end to his reign.

I appreciate it when Junior (Dos Santos) beat Cain Velasquez; I think Cain is so scary. And Junior tarnishes it by saying he was hurt. Because he’s not trying to tell you he was hurt – he’s attempting to paint a picture. And picture is, ‘As good as I did, I’m even better had I been healed.’ It’s absurd. You just trained for a cage fight. We would expect that you don’t feel that good. It’s extremely redundant to say that.”

It’s great marketing, It works. People go for it. It’s (manager) Ed Soares marketing 101. Each Blackhouse guy, that’s what they do. ‘I was hurt.’ And it’s like a new thing. I completely believe you. I don’t think you’re lying. I just don’t know what the relevance is.

Still, Sonnen was quick to point out that regardless of the number of casualties, the show always goes on, and in some instances, exceeds expectations.

They still sell out shows. Numbers are still great, and the roster is so deep that sometimes the replacement fights are better. So it’s not bad for business. I just don’t understand it. There’s so many fake tough guys in this sport. Man, you can get all the tattoos you want, and boast to everybody about how tough you are, but if you’re not willing to make that walk when they call your name, it doesn’t count.

UFC 148 is scheduled for July 7, 2012, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, NV.

Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen II: Sonnen Verbally Attacks Wanderlei, Belfort

UFC middleweight contender Chael Sonnen will fight Anderson Silva in the main event at UFC 148, but he still can’t help but spit venom about two other Brazilian fighters.

Speaking with a small group of journalists, Sonnen discussed Vitor Belfort’s injuries and Wanderlei Silva’s current fight ability (via MMA Fighting).

Vitor Belfort pulls out of more fights than he agrees to. He’s fantastic, but he’s such a chicken and he’s such a liar. To say you’re going to fight, to sell tickets, to sign your name, to film the TV show, and then to pull out? Against an invalid? That’s insane. It’s shocking they’re able to stay that with a straight face. My opinion of Wanderlei is constantly evolving, because as atrocious as he is skills-wise, he shows up and fights. He goes hard in spit of the lack of talent and gives the fans his best.

Belfort broke his hand during training for his scheduled 147 rematch with Silva, and lost a decision to the eventual replacement, Rich Franklin.

Both aging fighters are on a growing list of Brazilians speaking out about Team Quest’s fighters pre-fight trash talk, which included attacking Brazil as a country.

To be fair, even if Sonnen loses against Silva during their rematch, a potential fight against Silva or Belfort would sell tickets—but likely wouldn’t be a relevant fight to determine a middleweight contender. Aside from the UFC’s potential marketing opportunities, neither fighter deserves to have the opportunity to punch Sonnen in the face for his repeated attacks against Brazil.

By midday Monday, Sonnen was still 20 pounds away from making the 185-pound middleweight limit for his fight against Silva. Despite cutting weight and obvious media obligations, Sonnen is certainly willing to anger any Brazilian fighters—and fans—en route to his rematch with Silva
