Wanderlei Silva’s UFC 147 Replacement Revealed, and It’s a Familiar Face

(This one is for The Number 23, and the next one is for that God damn penguin movie!)

Yep, that’s right. None other than former middleweight champion Rich “Ace” Franklin will be the man to fill in for Vitor Belfort against Wanderlei Silva in the main event of UFC 147. The fight will be contested at a catchweight of 190 pounds. Sound familiar? That might be because these two met at UFC 99 back in June of 2009 at a catchweight of just five pounds heavier (a.k.a Rumbleweight, Franklinweight, Moneyweight, or 195 lbs.). The fight was an action packed affair that saw “Ace” emerge victorious by way of unanimous decision.

As you may recall, Franklin was originally expected to take on Cung Le at UFC 148, who has now been left without an opponent. After Vitor was forced to withdraw from his rematch with Silva due to a broken hand, however, everyone from Alan Belcher, who also injured himself in the meantime, to Michael Bisping, who Wanderlei already defeated by UD in his UFC middleweight debut back at UFC 110, were being pegged as potential opponents, even in light of Bisping/Boetsch already being announced.

Though this matchup will more than likely make for an exciting fight (being that their first scrap took home FOTN honors), we may be looking at the possibility of UFC 147 being demoted from a pay-per-view to a free card at this point. And here’s why.

Though this matchup will more than likely make for an exciting fight (being that their first scrap took home FOTN honors), we may be looking at the possibility of UFC 147 being demoted from a pay-per-view to a free card at this point. And here’s why.

Sign #1: The card, or lack thereof
First, let’s take a look at the card as it stands. Which is to say, barely. The only announced matchups are as follows.

Main Event:
190 lbs.: Rich Franklin vs. Wanderlei Silva

Other scheduled bouts:
TUF: Brazil featherweight finals
TUF: Brazil Middleweight finals
Mike Russow vs. Fabricio Werdum
Felipe Arantes vs. Milton Vieira
Yuri Alcantara vs. Hacran Dias

Aside from a pair of fights that will determine the TUF: Brazil winners, we have a couple of fights featuring names that only the hardcore fans will even recognize *cough* Milton Vieira *cough* and a likely co-headliner of Werdum vs. Russow. Whoop-dee-fucking-doo. Although Werdum looked nothing short of outstanding his last time around, the same can not be said for Russow. Yes, the kid is on a ridiculous 11-fight win streak, including four straight in the UFC, but in terms of drawing power, he is still very low on the heavyweight totem pole. Plus, his previous victories over anyone not named Todd Duffee were boring as shit. And besides, even the finales of American TUF seasons are relegated to free cards. Now that UFC 147 lacks even the drawing power of its original coaches, we see no reason why the UFC would think this card is worthy of a PPV buy.

Sign #2 – Relevance

Look, we love Wandy and Ace. In fact, this match, as with their first, is one of those fights where we don’t want to see either guy lose, unless it’s by way of some insane windmill-style knockout, of course. But let’s be real here, nothing short of a Kurt Russell miracle would have to happen for either of these guys to come anywhere close to the middleweight belt. Even though this fight is at catchweight, 185 is where both men will be calling their home for the time being, and probably until they call it quits.

Anderson Silva gave Franklin a permanent black eye and enough nightmares to make a WW2 vet stir in his sleep in their pair of fights, and Wanderlei only delayed a forced retirement by beating Cung Le last November. To think that either of these guys are the next threat to Anderson is not only ludicrous, it’s downright laughable. Franklin most recently dropped a UD to Forrest Griffin at UFC 126, and considering how FoGriff fared against Anderson, we can use the power of MMA math to determine that Silva might just beat Franklin to death were they to meet again. This is not meant as a knock on either man’s career, but rather an accurate assessment of why no one will be forking over 50 dollars for a card headlined by such a matchup.

Sign #3 – It’s in a foreign country

OK, so this one’s a bit of a stretch, but it seems that even when a card falls apart in the good old US of A, the UFC seems reluctant to admit defeat and just give away a card to the people. On the other hand, can you remember the last time a card that aired in London wasn’t free? Neither can we. As of now, UFC 147 is scheduled to go down at the Estádio Jornalista Felipe Drumond in Belo Horizonte, Brazil and has already switched venues to make way for that pesky UN. All we’re saying is: mediocre card + foreign country = Fight Night in the making.

Sign #4 – Dana White has yet to make up for UFC 112
demian maia vs anderson silva ufc 112

We haven’t forgotten your promise, DW. Now throw a couple more decent fights on this card and we can all forget the absolute turd that was Silva vs. Maia. Chop-chop.

So who’s stoked enough to shell out their hard earned cash on this one? To those of you who answered that last question with an emphatic “ME!”, can we borrow fifty bucks?

UFC 148 Preview: 10 Moments That Made Anderson Silva Great

At UFC 148, the incomparable Anderson Silva will defend his UFC middleweight title against Chael Sonnen. A rematch of their scintillating fight from UFC 117, this one promises to be a battle for the ages. And though Sonnen did well in the first encounter, he has his work cut out for him. The champion, without hesitation or doubt, is the best MMA fighter the world has ever seen.

That’s not just my opinion. Using our own statistical analysis, Bleacher Report determined that Anderson Silva is indeed the greatest MMA fighter of all time. But statistics only tell part of the story. Sport is about moments. Memories. Those snapshots in time that we will remember until our dying days, the proverbial “tell your grandkids about it” moments.

Here, once again, Silva stands alone. He does things in the cage you struggle to explain, let alone duplicate. His diverse striking technique is so incredible, so masterful, that he stands alone as the greatest artist in the history of a sport.

There may never again be another Anderson Silva. These moments are the reason why.

Rousimar Palhares Turns Down Offer to Train Chael Sonnen for UFC 148

Chael Sonnen‘s antics have grown on Brazilians, including UFC middleweight Rouismar Palhares, after it was learned that “Toquinho” turned down Sonnen’s request to prepare for Anderson Silva.

Palhares revealed to TATAME.com that the middleweight contender, who will challenge Silva for the UFC middleweight title at UFC 148, called his coach Murillo Bustamante and asked for some extra help but Palhares declined.

“He asked to train with me for Anderson but I’m not training anyone… Murilo said his coach has called him saying he wanted to come and train with me, but I said I won’t do it,” Palhares said.

Palhares said he declined the offer and he hopes to see Silva win.

“I’m rooting for Anderson. A fight is a fight… If he fights as much as he talks… Let’s see,” he said.

Sonnen won’t likely take offense to the Brazilian’s refusal to train him, but he did miss out on an opportunity to train with one of the most accomplished and credible submission grapplers at 185 pounds.

Sonnen lost Silva via triangle choke in their first bout at UFC 117 and enlisting Palhares’ services prior to the rematch would have benefited him.

Silva recently injured himself during training but he assured the minor injury will not force him to withdraw and he will be ready for July 8.

As for Sonnen, he’ll have to go back to the drawing board and seek another training partner.

UFC 148 Preview: Is Anderson Silva Preparing His Excuses for a Chael Sonnen Win?

Anderson Silva is, in the parlance of our times, shook. The longtime middleweight champion recently revealed he had tweaked his knee training for the rematch the world has been waiting for.

It was a moment those of us who follow the sport closely have been waiting for, the moment he showed the world that when the lights go out at night, when he stares up at the ceiling, when it’s only Silva and his God, the champion has doubts.

Challenger Chael Sonnen is so deep in Silva’s head, he’s got the champion’s hypothalamus in plain view. And with good reason—over the course of six title defenses, people treated Silva with a sense of awe. They genuflected before his greatness. Even opponents never seemed convinced that they could win.

Until Chael P. Sonnen.

Unlike the others, Sonnen didn’t place Silva on a pedestal. That honor was reserved for former President Richard Nixon, his father, even a great American patriot like Brian Stann. Silva wasn’t an idol to Sonnen—he was an obstacle.

For four rounds, Sonnen beat Silva from pillar to post. Like so many hot knives running through infinite slabs of butter, Sonnen ran through Silva. Dominated him. Bent him to his will. Surprised him with quick hands and a willingness to trade punches. An inexhaustible gas tank. And the ability to hold him on the mat and punch him in the face. Over and over and over again.

Silva, in one of the most amazing finishes in UFC history, managed a last-minute submission win. In his moment of desperation, when the odds seemed the longest, he came through. Because he’s a great champion and that’s what champions do.

But it was Sonnen who came out of the fight with the confidence that he could own a rematch. In an interview last month with Bleacher Report, Sonnen and his team seemed legitimately convinced that nothing was going to stop him from walking away with UFC gold.

They also told us that Silva, whose team leaked after their first fight that he had suffered a rib injury in training, would have Silva’s reasons for a poor performance primed and ready when Sonnen beat him at UFC 148.

“I’m going to let the whole world know in advance. I’m going to stomp you and this isn’t even going to be close,” Sonnen said. “So, get your excuses ready, sit down with Team Soares and come up with your excuses cause you’re going to need them in twenty-five minutes or less. And the same thing is going to happen this time. This will not be a close fight and people say, ‘Chael you’re just trying to sell the fight.’ No I’m not. I’m doing the opposite. I’m telling you this is not going to be a good fight, this is not a fight worth watching, this is not going to be a war; This is going to be a one sided beating. Just like the first time. Period. And he can have all the excuses he wants. But at the end of the day, when this fight’s done, it will not even be close.”

There are two fights. The mental and physical battle that takes place in the cage and the battle a fighter wages with himself. With his own confidence. The battle to believe you can win.

Sonnen is winning that battle. And, come fight night, I believe he will walk out of the cage as the new world middleweight champion.

Anderson Silva Plans to Fight Through Knee Injury Against Chael Sonnen at UFC 148

(Sources indicate that Silva’s knee buckled during an intense set of supermodel-lunges.)

According to Tatame, UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva has confirmed that he suffered a minor knee injury in training, about six weeks out from his rematch with arch-rival Chael Sonnen at UFC 148 (July 7th, Las Vegas). Silva later tweeted that his knee is feeling fine and it won’t stop him from settling his obligation with Sonnen.

Silva’s injury brings a discomforting sense of deja vu. After Chael inexplicably won the first four-and-a-half rounds from Silva during their first meeting in August 2010, Silva’s manager Ed Soares blamed his lackluster performance on a recent rib injury. Silva vs. Sonnen 2 originally held such promise for the champ; if Silva was 100% healthy and fighting in front of his countrymen, Sonnen was a dead man walking, guaranteed. Then the fight was moved, and this knee thing happened. Will we be looking at another tough five-round grind for the Spider?

Take a deep breath MMA fans, the fight will go on.

Tatame.com reported earlier that Anderson Silva injured his knee during a training session.

The fighter revealed to the press that he got his knee injured on a training session, and that he’s getting tested today to see how serious it is. Despite that, the champion was not limping during the ceremony, and seemed optimistic about the recovery.

There has been no mention as to which knee was injured (for strategic reasons).

There has been a very bad string of injuries for the UFC as of late. Most recently the validity of having UFC 147 as a pay-per-view came into question when Vitor Belfort was forced to withdraw after breaking his hand and leaving the card in a shambles.

Silva sent out a tweet on Monday evening guaranteeing that his knee was fine and he would be ready come July 7th:

Gennnteeee meu joelho vai muito bem obrigado!!!! , fiquem tranqüilos dia 7 de Julho estarei cumprindo meu trabalho.osss

After recent adversity with the FOX ratings, the UFC cannot afford to lose their main event in back-to-back pay-per-view events.

Although UFC 148 is one of the most stacked cards in the history of the organization, the rematch between Silva and Sonnen is still what is producing most of the buzz heading into the event.

Thankfully for MMA fans and the UFC, it looks like Silva will be fine moving forward.
