Today’s UFC 149 Casualty: Big Nog’s Arm Not Ready for Battle, Shawn Jordan to Face Cheick Kongo

“I have no problem with you competing like this, but first you’re going to have to trim those bangs.”

There’s nothing funny about the ‘Injury Curse‘ that’s been pillaging the UFC 149 card of talent, and for once our piss-poor writing isn’t to blame. Last night Sherdog.com broke the news (and what was left of our hearts) that Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira has not fully recovered from the broken arm he suffered courtesy of a Frank Mir kimura back at UFC 140.

Some might say it was wishful thinking when we prematurely celebrated how quickly “Minotauro” was healing; others might say it was a slow news day and that a short video helped fill the void. Either way, Dr. Frankenstein is running low on corpses and won’t be able to swap out Big Nog’s arm in time for his July 21st duel with the rule breaking hard hitting Cheick Kongo.

Details on Kongo’s opponent and how this card stacks up in the ‘Injury Card Hall Of Fame’ after the jump.

In his stead the UFC is gloving-up Shawn Jordan. The former LSU fullback has won his last two bouts under the Zuffa banner; Jordan submitted Lavar Johnson in Strikeforce with the keylock that eluded Pat Barry and scored a second round TKO over Oli Thompson at “UFC on FX 2”.

Shockingly, this card still doesn’t take top honors as the most injury-plagued card of all time. For now UFC 149 is still headlined by the Urijah Faber-Renan Barao scrap, though the day is still young.

Here’s a quick recap of UFC 149′s injuries thus far:

Summer is almost here.

Sure, it already feels like it is 147 degrees outside with humidity at 100 percent but summer does not officially begin until June 20th.

And from June 20th until September 21st, the last day of summer, fans will be treated to a lot of fantastic MMA action from around the globe.

The UFC will hold nine events all by themselves during the summer schedule. Strikeforce will hold one event in July and a second in August. And of course, Bellator and other promotions will chip in during the three month period.

Even with the slew of injuries that have been sustained there are an incredible amount of fun fights coming your way. Yes, even at UFC 147.

Let’s take a peak at what is to come and try to keep you indoors in the comfort of your air conditioning and chilled beverages.

Amidst the story of yet another Ultimate Fighter coaches bout having a replacement fighter and then moving from the co-main event to the main event after Aldo’s injury, the competitiveness of this bout was lost.

To many casual fans, it’s a no-brainer that Faber is going to win and set up a title unification bout with Cruz. However many people are overlooking the skill set that Barao brings to this fight.

In this slideshow I’m going to break down the fight based on several key areas:

Tale of the Tape

Immeasureables

Striking

UFC 149 Injury Report: Bibiano Fernandes Out, Koch Off the Card to Wait for Aldo [UPDATED]

(Fernandes came down with a sudden case of “wandering into Stockton by accident and getting his fuckin’ ass beat.”)

UPDATE, 11:46 a.m. ET: And now, Bibiano Fernandes is denying that he signed with the UFC in the first place. Huh…

How powerful is the 2012 UFC Injury Curse? It’s now attacking fighters who have just signed with the promotion. One week after DREAM bantamweight champ Bibiano Fernandes was inked to face Roland Delorme in his Octagon debut at UFC 149 (July 21st, Calgary), Bibi has withdrawn due to an injury suffered in training. Delorme is expected to remain on the UFC 149 card, against an opponent to be named later.

One big name who won’t be sticking around is Erik Koch, the featherweight contender who was originally slated to challenge for Jose Aldo’s belt at the event. Instead of taking a fight against a late-replacement, MMA Weekly reports that Koch will withdraw from the card and wait for Aldo to recover. Aldo reportedly suffered a thigh strain while preparing for the fight, and won’t be out for an extended period of time. But since Koch hasn’t competed since his decision win over Jonathan Brookins last September, he might be looking at a total layoff of a year or more — not an ideal situation when you’re heading into your first title fight.

Any guesses on who the UFC Injury Curse will strike next? You have to figure that at some point It will run out of fighters to ruin and move on to peripheral figures like ring girls and announcers. Please, please be careful with that thing, Bruce…

A plethora of recent injuries has forced the UFC to make adjustments to a few of its high profile matchups this summer.

One of the most notable shake-ups includes a new opponent for former Bellator Middleweight champ Hector Lombard, as he is now set to make his UFC debut against Tim Boetsch at UFC 149.

Lombard was originally slated to take on Brian Stann at UFC on FOX 4 in August, but an injury forced Stann off the card.  Meanwhile, Boetsch also lost an opponent due to injury as he was set to face Michael Bisping at UFC 149.

Now that this bout is hopefully set in stone—injury pending, of course—let’s take a look at the head-to-toe breakdown of this upcoming middleweight clash.

The UFC 149 Injury Curse Strikes Again: Jose Aldo Out, Faber vs. Barao New Main Event

For the last time, Joe: One of these guys is a fictional character and the other one has a shoulder injury.

At this point, do we even need to update our most cursed MMA events of all time list to include UFC 149? Calling this card “injury plagued” is as brilliant of an observation as saying that airline food is typically not of high quality. For those of you who have lost track of the fighters who have pulled out of bouts on this card due to injury, allow me to quickly refresh your memory: Vitor Belfort, Thiago Silva, Thiago Alves, and Michael Bisping.

And now you can add UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo to that list as well.

For those of you who have lost track of the fighters who have pulled out of bouts on this card due to injury, allow me to quickly refresh your memory: Vitor BelfortThiago SilvaThiago Alves, and Michael Bisping.

And now you can add UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo to that list as well.

Yesterday it was announced that Jose Aldo has suffered an undisclosed injury, and has been forced out of his UFC 149 headlining bout against Erik Koch. Taking over the main event slot will be an interim bantamweight title fight between Urijah Faber and Renan Barao, initially set as the co-main event for UFC 148. And not that it matters, but that fight was made possible by an injury to Bantamweight Champion Dominick Cruz.

For those of you keeping track, this summer has also seen injuries to Chad GriggsJon FitchBrian Stann, Pablo Garza and Edwin Figueroa shake up future cards. And to think, it’s only June.

While Erik Koch’s title fight has obviously been postponed, it is uncertain whether or not Koch will remain on the card. Perhaps the UFC will have him fight “The Korean Zombie” for an interim title? Oh wait…never mind.
