When Ronda Rousey signed with the UFC in 2012, it was clear that the promotion had a star on its hands, but perhaps no one knew just how big that star would become.

The “Rowdy” one quickly transcended the sport, becoming one of the biggest pay-per-view (PPV) draws in the UFC and rattling off six straight defenses of her long held 135-pound title. All six of those title defenses came by way of stoppage as well.

Rousey seemed to improve each and every time out and as she continued to succeed inside of the Octagon, her status outside of it skyrocketed as well. Heading into her UFC 193 (Nov. 15, 2015) title defense against Holly Holm in Melbourne, Australia, Rousey was on top of the world, but as we’ve learned, mixed martial arts is a sport that includes the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. The “Rowdy” one would end up suffering a brutal knockout at the hands of Holm and we’ve seen very little of her sense.

Despite her absence from the public eye, Rousey will return in the main event of this Friday’s (Dec. 30, 2016) UFC 207 from Las Vegas, Nevada to challenge champion Amanda Nunes for the title. Many have been unsure of what to expect from Rousey in her comeback fight, but let’s take a look at five reasons why she may return to full force come fight night:

Lack of Media

Prior to UFC 193, Rousey was a media machine, which, in addition to her elite level fighting skills, is what turned her in to the mega star she had become. “The Rowdy” one consistently made appearances on notable talk shows, as well as often taking part in various interviews and photo shoots with the world’s most prominent outlets and magazines.

Rousey was essentially everywhere, but that perhaps could’ve led to her downfall. Leading up to UFC 207, the ex-champion has refused to take part in any media obligations aside from a few talk show appearances, as she did an interview with Ellen DeGeneres as well as Conan O’Brien. Other than that, however, Rousey has been a shell of her former self in terms of media and promotion.

This may serve as a positive factor though. Rousey has admitted that she was too focused on making everyone around her happy and always saying “yes” rather than focusing on the task at hand. Perhaps her training for the Holm fight was hindered because of this.

With the lack of media she’s done leading up to UFC 207, I’d have to assume the former Olympian is solely focused on the upcoming fight, which may end up benefitting her when the cage door closes.

One of the biggest rematches the mixed martial arts (MMA) world can see today, is a rematch between formerly undefeated female bantamweight queen Ronda Rousey, and the women to hand her the first professional loss of her career, Holly Holm.

Holm defeated Rousey in their bantamweight title bout headliner at UFC 193 from Melbourne, Australia in November of last year, after the former kickboxing champion was able to pick apart ‘Rowdy’ with her superior stand-up game, leading to a second round knockout via head-kick.

Since then Rousey has not seen Octagon action for over a year, and after two consecutive losses since beating Rousey, Holm will now challenge Germaine de Randamie for the inaugural women’s featherweight title at UFC 208 on February 11th of 2017. During a recent media scrum, courtesy of FOX Sports, Holm discussed the possibility of a rematch with Rousey:

“I don’t think about it because there’s a lot that has to happen,” Holm said. “That’s what I say when people ask me about it. ‘Hey don’t you want to rematch Ronda?’ and I’m like well there’s a fight that’s taking place Dec. 30 and there’s still a fight taking place Feb. 11 and depending on how both of those go, that could be the make or break of everything, who knows what will happen in three months.

“Anything can happen in three months.”

Before any talk of a rematch can seriously get underway both women have tough tasks ahead of themselves. Rousey must successfully return to Octagon action when she takes on Amanda Nunes for the 135-pound title later this month. The bout should prove to be an interesting one, as it will be the first contest MMA fans have ever seen Rousey in after coming off of a difficult loss:

“I feel like everybody deals with losses different. Maybe time away for her and talking with everybody is what she needs. For me, the way I’ve dealt with it and had to come back from it, I’m coming back from it right now, the only thing that’s ever helped me is just being completely honest with myself,” Holm explained. “I figure the sooner I can deal with it, the sooner I can get past it.

“So I’m the type so let’s just address this right now but I do think coming back from a big loss, I’ve had some big losses before and I know being knocked out cold, being laid out, going back those first punches in a fight are like am I OK? Am I OK? Why am I even asking myself this? I’m OK. Let’s go! I think that’s a make or break moment. Ronda’s never been there in a fight before so I don’t think there’s anyway to tell how she’s going to be in those first exchanges until it happens.”

Ronda Rousey Knocked Out By Holly Holm at UFC 193 | The Big LeadAlthough she accomplished one of the biggest upsets in the sport’s history, Holm followed it up with what she calls ‘the worst year’ in her fighting career in 2016. After dropping the bantamweight title to Miesha Tate at UFC 196 in her first ever career title defense, and following it up with a unanimous decision loss to Valentina Shevchenko, Holm is ready to once again find her time to shine inside the Octagon:

“When I think about this year, I think about my year and it’s been the worst year for me,” Holm said. “2016 was not successful for me. I don’t think about anybody else actually. This November everybody’s putting out on social media ‘oh my gosh it’s been a year, congratulations Holly’ and all I’m thinking is it’s been a year since I won.

“As much as that was a big night for me, I’m ready for my own time to shine again and I guess I really haven’t thought a lot about it.”

Holm will meet De Randamie at UFC 208 for the inaugural women’s featherweight title live on pay-per-view (PPV), from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York on February 11, 2017.

Six Reasons Cyborg Should Forget About Fighting Ronda Rousey

Invicta FC featherweight champ Cristiane “Cyborg” Justino is rapidly becoming one of the most recognizable names in the UFC after finally making her Octagon debut with two stoppages over Leslie Smith and Lina Lansberg this year.

Those two wins arguably put her in line for her long-rumored super fight with returning former women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey, but ‘Rowdy’ was instead booked to face current UFC women’s 135-pound champ Amanda Nunes in the main event of December 30’s UFC 207 from Las Vegas. Cyborg was understandably furious when the news was announced, posting a seething response on social media and still campaigning for the bout in very hard-charging fashion.

Justino believes she is owed the fight because of her impressive body of work, but while she may deserve a fight with Rousey, there are several mitigating factors that would strongly argue she certainly isn’t owed the oft-discussed super fight – even if it may just be the biggest MMA fight of all time if and when it does happen.

Let’s break down six of the main factors why Cyborg should forget about fighting Rousey – at least for now:

Cyborg Weight Cut

6.) The Weight Class Remains A Big Issue:

While many believe Rousey should simply meet Cyborg at a catchweight of 140 pounds to stop ‘ducking’ her, the reality is that even making 140 pounds is an extremely taxing prospect for Justino that’s undoubtedly threatening to her long-term health.

She’s fought at 145 pounds for the vast majority of her mixed martial arts career, and at times, struggled to even make that division’s limit while walking around at upwards of 175 pounds. Cyborg definitely rehydrates well and shows up to the cage several pounds heavier than the class limit, perhaps a big reason why many top 135-pound women have been hesitant to fight her.

Rousey and the UFC know this, and it’s not all that tough to understand why they would want ‘Rowdy’ to return to a title fight against the current 135-pound champ rather than one against a nearly unstoppable bulldozer who is much bigger than her. It’s completely fine that Cyborg wants to hold a significant size advantage over her opponents, and it would probably take at least a year if not more to lose the muscle necessary to meet them at 135 pounds. She’s not willing to do that, however.

That means she can’t expect fighters to meet her demands so she can be much larger than them when fight time is here.

Word of a ‘huge UFC announcement’ from UFC President Dana White was swirling all day today (Wed., October 12, 2016), and the exec delivered just that.

Speaking during an appearance on FOX Sports 1’s “The Herd” with Colin Cowherd, White revealed that longtime former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey would finally be making her long-awaited return to the Octagon to face current champion Amanda Nunes in the main event of December 30’s UFC 207 from Las Vegas:

Rumors of the bout have been circulating for weeks, and MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani said the bout was close to being official late last night. Rousey has been out of action since suffering her first MMA loss to Holly Holm in the main event of last year’s UFC 193.

The onetime dominant queen, who built a superstar persona in Hollywood built on the foundation of her once-thought-to-be-invincible fighting prowess, has also hardly been seen in the public eye since the defeat.

With Invicta FC featherweight champion Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos now having won two UFC bouts over lesser-known competition in Lina Lansberg and Leslie Smith, the brutalizing Brazilian has once again ramped up trash talk directed at “Rowdy,” posting a seething, lengthy response to the UFC’s perceived booking of Nunes vs. Rousey before the fight was even announced.

Stepping right back into a bout with the most dangerous women’s fighter ever, and one that has never competed at her weight class, simply wouldn’t be the smartest career move for Rousey coming in off an already-devastating loss, and she appears to know it. Holm, despite obviously possessing knockout power of her own, can’t hold a candle to Cyborg in that department.

Of course Nunes is far from a slouch in that department, as she battered former champion Miesha Tate, who submitted Holm to win the belt at March’s UFC 196, at July’s UFC 200 to secure the title. For that reason, ‘Cupcake’ thinks Nunes would be a big, big problem for Rousey.

Do you?

As the biggest mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion of all time, the UFC has whipped up some huge fights in its history with some of the baddest men on the planet going head-to-head against one another.

Some fights between two top competitors don’t quite live up to the hype, however, as the bout ends up putting fight fans to sleep rather than keeping them on the edge of their seat for 25 minutes or less.

Then, once in a blue moon, we get a fight that not only lives up to the hype, but exceeds it tremendously. That, my friends, is what we have compiled for you today, the top 10 biggest fights in UFC history that have ended with historic finishes. Let’s begin……

fabricio-werdum-submission10. Cain Velasquez vs. Fabricio Werdum UFC – 188

We kick off our list in the big boys’ division, where two of the most dangerous heavyweights of all time clashed for the biggest prize in MMA.

Coming off of nearly a two-year layoff from the sport, Cain Velasquez would attempt to unify his title with the then-interim heavyweight champ Fabricio Werdum who was on a five-fight win streak.

The opening rounds were a bit back-and-forth and the arena in Mexico City was hot for their native Velasquez, however, the altitude proved to be too much for ‘Cardio Cain’ to handle as he gassed out in the third round.

Velasquez then shot in for a takedown on the Brazilian jiu-jitsu specialist and was immediately wrapped up in a nasty guillotine choke. Velasquez had no other choice but to tap out and make Werdum the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world.

It appears as though the wait to once again see ‘Rowdy’ Ronda Rousey return to the UFC’s Octagon may finally be over.

According to a report from FOX Sports, Rousey has been offered a bantamweight title bout against current champion Amanda Nunes at UFC 207 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. No agreement has yet been made as of this writing.

Nunes has been teasing a big fight announcement on social media, and the timing with reports that Rousey is nearing a deal to return to fight the Brazilian champ couldn’t fit any better:

Fight news coming soon ???? Novidade de luta chegando.

A photo posted by amandanunes (@amanda_leoa) on

The bout is certainly an appealing one to UFC President Dana White, as he is confident that the former bantamweight queen will fight Nunes before year’s end:

“Yes, there’s a big chance that Ronda Rousey will fight Amanda Nunes and I’m very confident that Ronda will probably fight before the end of the year,” White said.

Rousey (12-1) is coming off of the first loss in her professional mixed martial arts (MMA) career, when she suffered a second round knockout loss to Holly Holm in their championship meeting back in November of last year.

Nunes (13-4) is coming off of a first round knockout win over the now-former champ Miesha Tate in the main event of UFC 200 earlier this year.

The Brazilian jiu jitsu black belt is no slouch on the ground, and has some of the nastiest power in the women’s 135-pound division.

If reports of a return title fight for Rousey against Nunes are true, it is certainly a tall task for the former Olympic judoka. Stay with LowKick for the latest on Rousey’s potential return bout against ‘The Lioness’.
