With UFC 201 (July 30, 2016) now in the rearview mirror, all eyes are set on the promotion’s next upcoming pay-per-view event, and it’s a massive one. UFC 202 is set to take place on Saturday August 20, 2016 from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Headlined by the highly-anticipated rematch between Nate Diaz and featherweight champion Conor McGregor, the card marks one of the biggest of the year.

The two men previously met for the first time last March at UFC 196, when Diaz stepped up on less than two weeks’ noticed and end up submitting McGregor in shocking fashion. At first, the Stockton native was reluctant to accept the rematch so quickly, as he felt as if the UFC was hoping to ‘weed’ him out. Now, however, Diaz says that the UFC should hope he loses because if he doesn’t, he plans on ‘taking over’:

“So when it first got booked I was like, ‘They want to get me right back in there and try to win this back and weed me out again.’ That’s how it felt. I’m was like, ‘Can I just sit back for eight months and soak up some popularity and some exposure and just go on vacation and do what I gotta do?’ And they were like, ‘We want this’ and I’m like, ‘Why so quick? Whatever.’ Then the deals got done and I was like, ‘Wow. That payday and this payday in that short amount of time, can’t pass that up so let’s do it. But I feel like these guys want to weed me right back out, hoping that I lose. Alright, they’d better hope I lose because if I win this one, I’m really taking over.” Diaz said during The Exchange with Megan Olivi

As far as his preparation for the rematch goes, not much has changed for Diaz, although the former lightweight title challenger still feels as if he’s the ‘superior’ fighter:

“I’m gonna prepare. That’s about it. We’re gonna see. Same thing like I always say, we’ll go out there and my objective is to win. I’m gonna train hard and try to get it done. I believe I’m the superior martial artist. I’m just gonna go in there and get the job done and not get anything I don’t expect. My plan is to win and do good and work hard and win the fight. That’s my plan and we’re gonna have to see what happens.”

Who do you see winning the rematch?

John Kavanagh Has A Strange Prediction For Diaz vs. McGregor II

The fallout of July 9’s UFC 200 seems to be just now settling, and the UFC already has another pay-per-view (PPV) card coming up this weekend with July 30’s UFC 201 from Atlanta, but much of the larger focus of the MMA world is not surprisingly fixated on the anticipated welterweight rematch between Nate Diaz and

The fallout of July 9’s UFC 200 seems to be just now settling, and the UFC already has another pay-per-view (PPV) card coming up this weekend with July 30’s UFC 201 from Atlanta, but much of the larger focus of the MMA world is not surprisingly fixated on the anticipated welterweight rematch between Nate Diaz and featherweight champion Conor McGregor.

The bout, which was now-infamously originally scheduled for the main event of UFC 200 before the promotion pulled ‘The Notorious’ out of the spot when he refused to attend press obligations while training in Iceland, is a seeming grudge match spawning from McGregor’s intense desire to avenge his second-round submission loss to enigmatic late replacement Diaz at UFC 196 in March.

That’s keeping arguably the biggest star in the UFC fighting up two weight classes, something that appeared to be his undoing in his first fight with Diaz, where he gassed badly after winging a high volume of heavy power shots at the larger iron-chinned fighter.

Many may expect the same in the rematch, but McGregor’s longtime head coach John Kavanagh said the exact opposite would be true in a recent Q&A on Periscope, acknowledging that his star fighter simply threw “too many power shots” and “got tired.”

McGregor is well known for winning fights in emphatic fashion by doing just that against every opponent he’d faced in the UFC at 145 pounds, yet when it didn’t, he was left with nothing in the tank after getting wobbled by a big straight left hand before succumbing to a brutal choke. Kavanagh, who noted McGregor was taking this bout “a hundred times” more serious, believes the Irish standout will take Diaz to deep waters and finish him in “four” this time around.

It’s yet another bold prediction from the McGregor camp, who were on record as saying they were going to challenge surging welterweight champion Robbie Lawler after they ran through Diaz when lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos was forced out of his title fight with ‘Notorious.’

But that talk has cooled significantly after Diaz was able to further expose his perhaps suspect ground game, so it’s on McGregor’s shoulders to win the rematch and his respect back. He’s only gone the distance in one UFC bout, a unanimous decision nod over a green Max Holloway at August 2013’s UFC Fight Night 26 from Boston.

Taking a fighter like Diaz,’ who’s long been known for his cardiovascular endurance as a triathlete, would be a feat in and of itself. Are you buying Kavanagh’s prediction that McGregor will survive late to finish the resilient veteran in Diaz?

Eddie Alvarez Asks Dana White For ‘Gimme Fight’ Against Conor McGregor

The dust had hardly settled on Eddie Alvarez’s emphatic first-round stoppage of former champ Rafael dos Anjos in the main event of last night’s (July 7, 2016) UFC Fight Night 90 from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, and talk had already shifted to just whom Alvarez would fight next in the stacked

The dust had hardly settled on Eddie Alvarez’s emphatic first-round stoppage of former champ Rafael dos Anjos in the main event of last night’s (July 7, 2016) UFC Fight Night 90 from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, and talk had already shifted to just whom Alvarez would fight next in the stacked UFC 155-pound fray.

Sure, there were top-level contenders like Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson awaiting their shot at gold, but the predictable choice for the biggest event was obviously a fight with featherweight champion Conor McGregor, who’s set to rematch Nate Diaz at welterweight in the main event of August 20’s UFC 202.

There are still several roadblocks to get past in order to make McGregor vs. Alvarez a reality, but if a realistic chance does indeed arise, “The Underground King” is certainly all for it. He compared the deep UFC 155-pound talent pool to McGregor’s skills at the post-fight presser, and needless to say, it added up to Alvarez dubbing the ‘Notorious’ an easy fight.

He even told the Irish trash talker that he welcomes it directly:

“For me, I think by far, the best lightweight in this division is Rafael dos Anjos. I had the better night for sure, but this can go either way. There’s great competitors and there’s a real small margin for error. And if you mess up once, it could be me on the other end of that punch. So, this guy to the right of me is the best in the division, so to be able to come out with a win over him, and before him was Pettis, and before him was Gilbert, these are the best guys in the division. I’m not taking on Top 15, so I would ask Dana White to give me an easier fight like Conor McGregor. I deserve that, I’ve been fighting the best guys, so I would like a gimme fight, so Conor, I more than welcome that.”

Alvarez expounded upon that notion, adding his thoughts that McGregor has simply been given favorable match-ups throughout his undefeated run of the featherweight division, which stopped when he moved up in weight to take on a late replacement in Diaz only to be brutally submitted at March 5’s UFC 196.

Believing McGregor to be a one-trick pony, he offered the opinion that the UFC’s biggest star would be exposed in short order if he was ever to face a top 155-pound like himself or dos Anjos:

“There’s a lot of guys in the UFC who are good at one thing and they get matched up stylistically well and they make their way to the top without ever going against the best guys. The true best guys like Rafael dos Anjos and the best guys in the division. They sneak their way around them and they live on perception, not what really is. He’s one of ’em. So I think he could get found out, if he was ever to fight Rafael dos Anjos or myself, he would get found out very quickly.”

It wasn’t just he fight between Nate Diaz and Conor McGregor that rocked our world, it was the entire package, head-to-toe, and all crammed in to just 11 days. When UFC lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos dropped out of the March 5 UFC 196 main event, unlikely replacement Nate Diaz stepped in to the frame. It would be a welterweight affair, but even so the bookmakers heavily favored the featherweight champion McGregor to take home the victory.

Diaz would throw up the middle finger to the underdog status he’d been labelled with, slapping and clowning ‘The Notorious’ en route to a crazy second round submission win.

Although briefly booked to headline the blockbuster UFC 200 card this coming July 9 weekend, McGregor and Diaz have instead been scheduled to rematch at UFC 202 on August 20. In honor of that amazing first fight and what will no doubt be an insane second scrap, we’ve gone back and selected the top five moments from the Diaz/McGregor rivalry.

From the press conferences, social media rants, all the way to the fight itself and beyond, this rivalry really has it all.

5. Touch Butt In The Park

When Conor McGregor tried to take a stab at Nate Diaz’s training partners during the UFC 196 pre-fight press conference, he didn’t expect to get this response. Blasting McGregor for playing touch butt in the park with ‘the dork with the pony tail’ became an instantly classic moment in MMA history.

Diaz would end up feeding McGregor all his words and more when they met, and the next moment might well be what spurred the Stockton bad boy on to victory.

4. Gazelle Argument

During fight week for UFC 196, Diaz and McGregor sat down with FOX Sports Jay & Dan or a now historic interview. The subject of an injured gazelle was brought up, and from there onward the debate spiralled quickly in to insanity.

You know it’s the real sh*t! Yes we did, and we loved every minute of it.

3. Greatest Prediction EVER

When Nate Diaz gets on the microphone before a fight, you know there’s some good stuff about to go down. Much like his older brother Nick, the Stockton native doesn’t mince his words or try and come up with some sort of smart ass remarks.

When Nate Diaz gets asked for a prediction about his upcoming fight, you better believe he’s expecting some ninja sh*t.

2. Gun Signs With The Left Hand

At the first of two pre-fight pressers in just 11 days, Nate Diaz and Conor McGregor squared off in a trash talking showdown for the media. This was perhaps the first and only time that McGregor really got the nest of Diaz in the mental game, and boy, it was hilarious.
Funny that he brought up BJJ there, as that would be McGregor’s downfall when the two eventually met.

1. The fight, post fight interview and aftermath

We had to include all this in the last section of the list, as all deserve equal recognition for their place in UFC history. The fight itself was an absolute barn burner, back-and-forth striking exchanges before the inevitable submission win for Diaz.

Then ‘I’m not surprised motherf*ckers’ and the stream of remixes, memes and crazy reactions that spread like wildfire across the internet.

UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor and former women’s bantamweight queen Ronda Rousey have a lot in common. They are probably the first two names that come to mind when the phrase ‘MMA superstar’ arises, but they also shared a very similar sequence of events in the last year. After receiving previously unseen amounts of hype before their most recent fights, both Rousey and McGregor suffered well publicized and career-altering defeats; In fights they were both heavily favored to get the win.

For ‘Rowdy,’ the loss to Holly Holm might well have marked the last time the ex-champion fights, period. The circumstances surrounding ‘The Notorious’ and his first UFC loss were slightly diferfent though, but the outcome was nearly identical; massive backlash from fans who rejoiced in his defeat, although McGregor never suffered the deep depression and life changing sorrow that Rousey did, at least not extrovertly. His submission loss to Nate Diaz at UFC 196 has spurred a rematch at UFC 202 on August 20.

Both McGregor and Rousey can arguably get the credit for bringing more attention to the UFC in the last year than the promotion had ever experienced before. Their brash manner and hogging of the limelight made them household names, and with it the banner for whom they compete. Casual fans who knew nothing of the sport before now had the name and date, and also how to watch these outrageous superstars attempt to back up their trash talk in the octagon.

Even after their respective losses, Conor McGregor and Ronda Rousey are superstars still. That’s what made this image, when released months back, quite a tantalising and sensational subject:

All we knew was that the two titans of modern MMA were staring each other down for some kind of commercial featuring Bud Light. Well now it’s explained further, as this teaser trailer (as if we needed it) has been released. It would appear that McGregor and Rousey are members of opposing teams taking part in a type of MMA challenge.

The lead up to UFC 196, a least the last 11 days of it, was filled with talk about size difference. After dominating the featherweight division with his massive size and reach advantage, Conor McGregor found himself as the physically smaller man when Nate Diaz stepped in to replace the injured Rafael dos Anjos. No longer was the lightweight title on the line, nor was the 145-pound strap, as ‘The Notorious’ and Diaz agreed to a 170-pound weight limit for their short notice dance.

In the end it was the Stockton bad boy who would revel in the spoils of triumph, putting the crews to an exhausted McGregor with a second frame rear naked choke. As the Irish superstar tapped in submission, the mixed martial arts world was once again thrown in to turmoil. Another ‘untouchable’ fell to an underdog, and Diaz’s victory launched his stock in to the stratosphere.

The sharp wit and cocky predictions of McGregor were now vastly over shadowed by the gritty realism and anti-BS of the infamous Nate Diaz. The grappler-boxer from Stockton, California was finally getting the air time he’d so wanted, but it wasn’t long before he was inevitably linked to ‘The Notorious’ once again. UFC 200 was the proposed event, and a do-over at welterweight was forcibly requested by McGregor.

UFC president Dana White revealed McGregor wanted to ‘run it back,’ thoroughly unhappy with his performance in their first fight on March 5, ad wanted the chance to show what he really had to offer the bigger man in Diaz. All this and more fell by the wayside as Diaz vs. McGregor 2 suddenly slipped out of existence, albeit temporarily.

‘The Notorious’ semi-retired, got in to beef with the UFC and even stoked the fire around the rumours of a boxing match with Floyd Mayweather before finally removing his head from the clouds. The deal was made, UFC 202 was the card on August 20, and the two rivals who shared such an enthralling beef before UFC 196 would do it all over again. But what of this ever present size difference?
