It’s once again fight day, but this time it’s particularly special, as the former UFC light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones makes his return to the octagon. After 15 months away from action, “Bones” was originally meant to challenge Daniel Cormier for the title. Instead the junior belt is on the line between Jones and Cormier’s injury alternate Ovince St-Preux. The odds will tell you that OSP is a long shot, Jones’ highlight reel record would also argue the same, but of course it’s a fight and anything can and often does happen.

All of the marbles of a shot at redemption lay in wait for “Bones,” and obviously a win for Saint-Preux would catapult him in to the elite status he’s been longing for. Unfortunately for the very likeable OSP, he’s facing a monster in the ex-champion.

Here’s LowKick’s Five Reasons Jon Jones Will Destroy OSP…

Life is like a box of chocolates, and much like Jon Jones’ striking, you never know what you’re going to get. “Bones” mixes up his wide variety of striking techniques so well, that even if you think you know what’s coming, you won’t be able to defend it. His accuracy is insane, and the brutal force he delivers his elbows, knees, kicks, punches and spinning strikes with is simply scary to watch.

For Ovince St-Preux it’s going to be a very tough night for many reasons, but perhaps the most dangerous aspect for the unlikely contender is that unpredictability of Jones’ tool box.

The future of the UFC light-heavyweight division once again lies in the hands of Jon Jones. This time around it’s the interim title on the line, as the former 205-pound kingpin returns to the octagon after a long period of absence. “Bones” was originally set to face off against his old rival and current champion Daniel Cormier at UFC 197, but when “DC” was injured the promotion inserted Ovince St-Preux in to this weekend’s main event. Equally OSP has the chance to shock the world and become the first man to ever defeat one of the all time greats.

St-Preux is clearly the underdog in terms of the betting odds, and that’s due in the main part to Jones’ undefeated streak during his first reign with the belt. His run in the octagon includes wins over such competition as Vitor Belfort, Alexander Gustafsson, Glover Teixeira, Rashad Evans, Rampage Jackson, Lyoto Machida, Shogun Rua and many more.

Jones’ antics outside the octagon have hindered his progress as a fighter over the last 15 months, but his return is still highly anticipated. Although his original opponent Cormier is now out of the picture for the moment, the fight with OSP has many charming and exciting characteristics, and that goes for both sets of supporters going in to April 23.

UFC 197 took a massive hit this week in a strange change of circumstances. After it was originally jeopardised by Jon Jones’ drag racing and subsequent probation violation arrest, the mixed martial arts community was relieved to learn that ‘Bones’ wasn’t going to prison. Receiving more community service and instructed to attend anger management following the vulgar viral video of the traffic stop, Jones was a green light for UFC 197 once again.

With just three weeks until the fight goes down, suddenly the light-heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier pulls out injured. It’s the first time in the Olympian’s pro career that he’s dropped out of a fight, and it’s possibly the biggest rematch he’ll ever face, after the bitter rivalry before UFC 182 with Jones. Now sidelined, the UFC (well, Ariel Helwani really) announced Cormier’s replacement at UFC 197. In steps Ovince St-Preaux, and the interim belt is on the line!

MMA: UFC 159-Villante vs St. Preux

So what do you think, will OSP stand a chance against arguably one of the greatest fighters to have graced the UFC octagon? St-Preaux’s record is far from unblemished, but he certainly has some very impressive wins. He KO’d former champion from the Pride era and UFC, Mauricio Shogun Rua, and he’s also got wins over Ryan Jimmo, Nikyta Krylov and Rafael Cavalcante.

With Jones though, it’s a totally different story, the guy is just a monster, so it will be interesting to see how OSP approaches such a huge leap in competition in this fight, taken on short notice too.

UFC light-heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier is once again involved in a deep feud with the ex-champ Jon Jones. After defeating ‘DC’ at UFC 182 last January, ‘Bones’ went on a bender in New Mexico that would leave a pregnant woman injured following a late night car wreck, and also Jones’ reputation in tatters. The promotion yanked the belt from the shoulder of Jones, and Cormier submitted Anthony Johnson for the vacant belt at UFC 187.

Now set to collide at UFC 197 on April 23, Jones and Cormier have wasted no time in making their feelings toward each other known. The ‘unstoppable’ press conference last week topped off a back and forth over social media that perhaps saw ‘Bones’ take the upper hand, and he even brought his own belt to the conference to troll Cormier.

There was nothing like the infamous UFC 178 media day brawl to report, but an interesting segment from the latest edition of The MMA Hour flew under the radar. According to one of Cormier’s training partners, heavyweight kickboxer Chi Lewis-Parry, ‘DC’ and ‘Bones’ had a pretty nasty confrontation after the press conference last week. Check it out:

Wow, some pretty nasty stuff going on between Jones and Cormier by the sounds of it, and not a camera in site. This would strengthen the opinion that the former Olympian has of his foe, having called the ex-champion a ‘fake’ on multiple occasions.

So what else is hot in the world of MMA right now? Well, unless you were chilling under a rock this past weekend, you’ll know that Conor McGregor was defeated by Nate Diaz at UFC 196 after a very heated rivalry.

Team USA vs. Team Ireland at UFC 200! What a fight that would be, and now Frankie Edgar sets the scene with some unique….trash talk?

UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor has got on the wrong side of a lot of opponents during his UFC run, most notably during his wild year-long feud with former champ Jose Aldo. Perhaps the feelings Frankie Edgar has towards McGregor are stronger than anyone else’s though, and the two are yet to fight. ‘The Notorious’ moving up to lightweight has meant Edgar being made to wait for a title shot yet again, as the Irish star is now booked to face Rafael dos Anjos for the lightweight strap at UFC 197.

Aside from probably having to rematch Jose Aldo next to stay active, ‘The Answer’ has also voiced his displeasure with McGregor being allowed to put the featherweight title on hold, as he was denied the same luxury while serving as the lightweight champion. So for many reasons, Frankie is not too happy right now.

It wouldn’t be a Frankie Edgar fight if he didn’t get just a little busted up…

The lack of trash talk has seemingly hindered Edgar’s rise to another title fight, but he’s looked to put that right lately, or at least through his manager assuming his identity on Twitter.

Talking to FOX Sports, the former lightweight boss had some interesting opinions on when he’ll finally face McGregor, and also the UFC 197 main event. Check it out:

“I kind of had an idea it was going to happen before it was announced, I think Conor played the smart move, he played the business move. You can’t blame him for that, it just sucks that it’s at my expense and now I’m in limbo since I was supposed to get that next title shot. If he stuck around and lost to me, he has no option to go up to 155. I think now he goes up, win or lose, he’s still got the belt and he can come back down to 145. He played the safe play which is smart by him.

“You don’t see usually where the guys have that much say. Usually when you’re the champion, you fight the No. 1 contender, you don’t get to pick and choose. But he seems to be able to do that.”

“Not much. It was pretty much wait and see what happens March 5 before they make any decision,” Edgar revealed. “I know I’m in line for it. I assume (Jose) Aldo is being considered, but I went out there and made my case. I think that is the biggest fight, I think that’s the fight most people are interested in seeing and I’m hoping the UFC does the right thing and books me and Conor for UFC 200.

“I’m pretty much on the backburner until March. I’m going to be in the gym to help my teammates and getting better and working on some southpaw fighters.”

Fabricio Werdum Is Very Unhappy With Conor McGregor

Training partner of Rafael dos Anjos and current UFC heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum is not impressed by Conor McGregor’s recent antics…

UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor was in typical form at the UFC 197 press conference. Hijacking the even from start to finish, ‘The Notorious’ put his upcoming opponent Rafael dos Anjos on blast as a traitor, and vowed to behead the lightweight champion and drag his body through the streets of Brazil. ‘RDA’ didn’t really react to the taunts, but then he didn’t have much of an opportunity to either.

As was the case with Jose Aldo before him, Rafael dos Anjos doesn’t really tend to engage in the theatrics much. Of course this just means McGregor has more of a chance to get as much trash talking done as possible, but it also scores the brash Irishman his fair share of enemies.

fabricio werdum 2

UFC heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum is not happy with the way McGregor spoke about his Kings MMA team mate at the UFC 197 presser, and has a strong opinion on the scene that went down between the two this week. Check out the quotes from MMAFighting.com:

“When have a fight with my friend, you have a fight with me, too,” Werdum said. “We’re a family. If you say something bad, you pay for this for sure.”

“When [reporters] had a question for Rafael and he talked over him, this is no good,” Werudm said. “If it was my opponent, I would do this [Werdum makes a gesture like throwing water in his face, then makes a slapping sound], I’d say ‘be quiet.’ But that’s not Rafael’s personality. He’s a smart guy, okay, he controls himself, he just thinks about the fight.”

“It’s very important to respect,” Werdum said. “You have your space, I have my space. We have a fight, why do you touch me before. I thought Conor McGregor wasn’t showing respect. It’s not good. If he does it to me, he has a big problem. It think it’s very important he respects my space and I respect his space.”

FotorCreated

It seems there’s quite a division between the Brazilian style of promotion and pretty much the rest of the western scene. The pride and respect of traditional martial arts seems to be how dos Anjos’ image is translated, and obviously in contrast you have the WWE style antics of a Chael Sonnen or Conor McGregor type character on the other side of the coin.

The question is, which is more beneficial for the sport?
