The highs and lows of this extremely eventful triple-event UFC fight week continue to unfold at an unprecedented rate. First off we entered the MMA twilight zone when Jon Jones was removed from this weekend’s July 9 UFC 200 super card. A failed drug test by USADA (United States Anti Doping Agency) that dated back to mid-June was revealed in a shocking turn of events this past Wednesday, leading to a veritable of wild headlines.

Anderson Silva was later announced as the Absent Jones’ replacement, as the interim champion tried to address his failed drug test to the media on the same day. The heavyweight attraction between Mark Hunt and Brock Lesnar was promoted to the main event, and all of a sudden UFC 200 was looking tidy again. Amidst the highly entertaining UFC Fight Night 90 card last night there was yet more of a shuffle announced.

Miesha Tate 2

UFC women’s bantamweight champion and fierce contender Amanda Nunes were now bumped up to the main event, as Lesnar and ‘The Super Samoan’ were demoted to the second fiddle spot. As reported by Brett Okamoto on Twitter and Dana White himself (as quoted by Damon Martin of FOX Sports).

“Miesha is the woman who beat the woman who beat the woman. She’s the champ,” White said. “What she accomplished a few fights ago, you can’t disrespect that. She should be the main event. She deserves that.”

MieshaYell

Since defeating Holly Holm at UFC 195, Tate has been talking a lot about fighting Ronda Rousey. Now, in the absence of the biggest draw in women’s MMA history, ‘Cupcake’ finds herself headlining the biggest event in UFC history. It’s strange how things turn out.

The updated UFC 200 main card (for the fourth time in two days) is as follows:

Main event

Miesha Tate vs. Amanda Nunes

Co-main event

Brock Lesnar vs. Mark Hunt

Main card

Daniel Cormier vs. Anderson Silva

Frankie Edgar vs. Jose Aldo (interim featherweight title fight)

Cain Velasquez vs. Travis Browne

It’s been a long and winding road leading to the official announcement of the UFC 200 main event. It was first confirmed last month as Nate Diaz vs. Conor McGregor 2 in a welterweight rematch of their UFC 196 brawl, but that fight fell to pieces in a matter of weeks. When ‘The Notorious’ refused to show up for his initial media obligations state side, the promotion decided to pull him from the event all together. The UFC 200 card appeared to lay in tatters, but then we were teased with yet another big announcement happening today.

See you at UFC 201, maybe?
See you at UFC 201, maybe?

Keeping in line with their mainstream takeover, the UFC appeared on ABC’s Good Morning America show today, hoping to break the news of the UFC 200 headliner. Present were UFC women’s bantamweight champion Miesha Tate, strawweight contender and DWTS competitor Paige VanZant, Chuck Liddell, Dana White, Jon Jones and current 205-pound champion Daniel Cormier. As if it wasn’t big enough the promotion was taking over a full half hour segment of the ABC morning show, someone decided to leak a poster of the official UFC 200 main event fight a good 15 minutes before the announcement was made:

Dana White would go on to confirm the main event as Daniel Cormier vs. Jon Jones 2, although by that time every MMA fan and media outlet already knew this. Will a rematch between “DC” and “Bones” sell anywhere near as much as the originally planned Diaz vs. McGregor 2? It’s highly unlikely, but clearly the promotion is more willing to take a financial hit than appear to ‘set precedents’ for fighters to be able to avoid untimely press conferences in other countries.

Stay tuned.

The UFC just rocked the MMA world, details here…

It’s official, UFC 200 has the main event booked, and once again we’ll see a milestone pay-per-view event headlined by a rematch. Last time it was UFC 100 featuring Frank Mir vs. Brock Lesnar 2, this time around it’s Nate Diaz and Conor McGregor who will front the blockbuster PPV card. Set to go down on July 9 at the brand new T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, UFC 200 was heavily rumoured to feature Conor McGregor vs. Nate Diaz part deux, and was t5oday confirmed by the UFC Tonight crew on Twitter:

Although the news was already ‘confirmed’ by Ariel Helwani of MMA Fighting, it was kept under wraps by the promotion until officially being announced just moments ago. Diaz and ‘The Notorious’ fought at UFC 196, with the Stockton bad boy coming in on just 11 days notice to rain on the UFC’s and McGregor’s parade. He’s been making the most of his time in the media ever since.

Frankie Edgar

Another huge fight, and it features the two top contenders at featherweight. With McGregor staying at welterweight for the moment, much to the dismay of many hardcore fans, the junior title will be on the line, presumingly in the co-main event of the monster UFC 200 schedule. Former champion Jose Aldo whom McGregor one punch knocked out at UFC 194, will rematch legitimate number one contender Frankie Edgar for the interim strap. As confirmed by UFC Tonight:

So there you have it, another crazy evening of news, as McGregor and Diaz are officially headlining UFC 200, and Jose Aldo takes on Frankie Edgar for the scraps at 145 pounds. Thoughts on whether these are the right match ups?
