The UFC has proven to be a perfect breeding ground for the weird and wonderful both inside and outside of the Octagon since its inception 25 years ago.

However, some events, in particular, have gone above and beyond the call of duty and proven to be magnets for madness.

In this article, we’ll look back in chronological order at the 10 strangest shows in UFC history. Check them out:

UFC 1

Lead commentator Bill ‘Superfoot’ Wallace set the tone for the UFC’s first-ever event in 1993 when he unintentionally burped and mistakenly called the promotion, ‘The Ultimate Fighting Challenge’ during his opening monologue.

In the opening fight, Gerard Gordeau gave 400-pound plus sumo wrestler Teila Tuli some free dental work when he kicked him flush in the face, sending one tooth flying into the crowd and leaving his foot cut badly enough that it would later hospitalize him for several days due to a serious infection.

The 6′ 4″, 265-pound Kevin Rosier had looked athletic in his audition photos, but showed up on fight week at a portly 300 pounds, fresh from having had root canal surgery and unashamedly eating pizza and swigging Heineken while working out at a local gym.

Nonetheless, Rosier won his opening round fight, then Art Jimmerson bizarrely fought Royce Gracie wearing a single boxing glove and proceeded to tap out following a takedown before the BJJ expert even had a chance to lock up a submission.

During the final, Gordeau bit Gracie on the ear, claiming later that he wanted to give the Brazilian something to remember him by, and in response, Gracie intentionally held onto the fight-ending choke for several seconds longer than he should have.

UFC middleweight CB Dollaway was set to fight Francimar Barraso at UFC 203 in September of 2016 when an elevator he was in at the Wyndham Hotel in Cleveland malfunctioned, causing him permanent damage.

Dollaway (16-8) spoke with MMA Fighting about being sidelined for the majority of the last 17 months due to this incident, and how he is pursuing a lawsuit against the hotel due to the injuries suffered, which he says are permanent:

“There’s permanent damage. There’s no way to — it’s irreversible, essentially. I could go try to do a surgery or something, but my doctors have been like, ‘Yeah, I wouldn’t recommend it,’ because they don’t know how that’s going to turn out. So it just is what it is, you know?”

Dollaway did compete against Ed Herman last July, but back injuries plagued him after that fight. It will have been almost nine months since he’s last stepped in the cage when he fights Hector Lombard at UFC 222 in March.

Dollaway was preparing for a light heavyweight fight when the hotel incident forced him out of UFC 203, but his time spent sidelined with injuries has forced him back to middleweight.

However, the 34-year-old isn’t ruling out another attempt at light heavyweight in the future:

“It just depends if I put the size back on, which, I imagine I will. It’s just going to take a little time. Putting on 10 or 15 pounds of muscle, it’s hard, especially with high cardio and everything we do,” Dollaway said. “But yeah, I fought that fight there (in July) and I just didn’t feel the same as I did before. Like, when I had originally moved up, I felt big, strong, I feel good. Then this time when I went in there, I didn’t feel like myself at that weight, so I was like it’s probably better to go back down to middleweight.

“I just want to make sure I’m healthy. At the end of the day, I’m not going to walk away from this sport with millions and millions of dollars, most likely, so you’ve got to make sure your body’s good when you leave the sport. I’m not going to rush back in and get permanently injured even more, so I’ve got to look out for myself a little bit.

“When you walk away (from the sport), are you going to be able to function? At the end of the day, I want to make sure I can still live a decent life when I’m done with it.”

How do you expect Dollaway to look against Lombard next month? Will the time off due to injuries affect his performance?

CM Punk’s MMA debut happened to also be his UFC debut, and it wasn’t much of a surprise when he lost that fight to Mickey Gall back at September 2016’s UFC 203.

Even though Punk, whose real name is Phil Brooks, took an absolute beating, the former WWE superstar wants another shot in the Octagon.

UFC President Dana White told The Associated Press that he’s aware Punk wants another MMA fight, and appears more than willing to give him one:

“I like that guy, he’s a good dude. He wants one more. He wants to get another shot. I’m going to give it to him. He’s a completely different case than most normal human beings, so I’m going to give him another shot.”

Punk made a slow transition from professional wrestling to mixed martial arts, training under Duke Rufus’ academy for a year and a half before his first fight was even announced. It turns out that a crash course in fighting isn’t enough to win on the world’s biggest stage, regardless of the 18 months Punk put in.

White refrained from getting into specifics like a potential opponent or a timeline, but one thing is for sure – CM Punk wants to fight again, and with White’s blessing, we’re going to see Punk fight in the UFC again.

Punk (0-1) is one of two high-profile WWE wrestlers to make the plunge into MMA. The other had a much more measured degree of success, even if it was short-lived in a sense. Brock Lesnar won the heavyweight title from Randy Couture back in 2008. Punk competes in the welterweight division.

Would you like to see CM Punk try his hand at MMA again? Who would be an ideal opponent, if there is one?

After two straight submission wins over Sage Northcutt and CM Punk, rising UFC welterweight Mickey Gall looks to have a bright future ahead of him as one of MMA’s best potential self-promoters.

But all of that almost didn’t happen, as Gall revealed his bout with the debuting Punk (real name Phillip Brooks) almost didn’t happen at last September’s UFC 203 from Cleveland, Ohio, due to this absolutely gruesome cut he suffered from an accidental headbutt in training. It was so bad that it required 21 stitches and his doctor warned him not to fight for six months, orders he clearly didn’t follow. Check it out from his official Instagram account:

Yikes. We see large cuts in MMA all the time, but that’s one of those where it looks like you can almost see into the fighter’s brain.

As he detailed, Gall not only fought three weeks after the cut was stitched up, but he also made a quick turnaround to fight twice in only two thirds of his doctor’s recommended return time when he called out fellow touted prospect Sage Northcutt for a December bout at UFC on FOX 22.

He won the fight by submitting the highly hyped but under-delivering ‘Super’ Sage, and as he said, two superstars were whooped while one was (perhaps) born.

Stipe Miocic Feels ‘Crapped On’ By UFC

Like many UFC fighters, reigning heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic isn’t too pleased with the promotion regarding fighter pay. In fact, the Cleveland-native recently described the situation as ‘terrible’ and ‘not fair’: “[It’s] terrible,” Miocic said on The MMA Hour. “Things definitely need to be changed. Something’s gotta change. It’s not really fair.” Miocic is coming

Like many UFC fighters, reigning heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic isn’t too pleased with the promotion regarding fighter pay.

In fact, the Cleveland-native recently described the situation as ‘terrible’ and ‘not fair’:

“[It’s] terrible,” Miocic said on The MMA Hour. “Things definitely need to be changed. Something’s gotta change. It’s not really fair.”

Miocic is coming off of a star-building performance, as he scored a first round knockout over veteran Alistair Overeem last September at UFC 203 in his home of Cleveland. Miocic headlined the event, which sold out the Quicken Loans Arena, but despite his performance, he said that he felt ‘crapped on’ by the UFC:

“I just felt like I was kinda crapped on a little bit,” Miocic said. “I try to do things right and work with them, and they just didn’t give me a great deal. That’s my own fault, but also they knew what they were doing. They took my kindness for weakness.

“They told me it was the best deal they could do, and I said, oh okay, great. And then come to find out, it wasn’t.”

As far as why exactly it wasn’t the best deal, Miocic revealed that he actually made less than Overeem, who was the challenger. According to the Ohio Athletic Commission (Via MMAFighting.com), Miocic received a $600,000 payout, while Overeem was rewarded $800,000.

The champion feels as if this was a ‘slap in the face’ by the UFC:

“Blah, blah, blah, blah. They just made up some excuse, like that’s the contract you signed,” Miocic said.

“You’re making money off me in my hometown, and you’re giving the man that’s a challenger who’s never won the title in the UFC, you’re giving him more money?

“It definitely should change. But the fact that my challenger made more money than me in my last fight was just kind of a slap in the face.”

Miocic currently doesn’t have his next fight booked, but he did say that he is targeting a May return to action. He also seemed optimistic that he would be able to work out his contract issues with the UFC.

What do you make of the champion’s comments?

Former World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) star CM Punk made his long awaited mixed martial arts (MMA) debut earlier this year, when he suffered a first round submission loss to Mickey Gall at UFC 203 in Cleveland this past October.

After suffering the quick defeat many called for Punk to be cut from the major promotion, proposing that he instead come up through the circuit of smaller promotions and return when his skills have sharpened. UFC President Dana White stated that perhaps Punk’s next fight shouldn’t be in the UFC, however, ‘The Cult Of Personality’ himself is willing to throw down anywhere, UFC or not.

During a recent appearance on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani earlier today (Monday November 21, 2016), Punk detailed a conversation he had with White after his loss to Gall, to which he remained adamant on wanting to get back in the Octagon again:

“I don’t want to speak for him, but I think if he wants to kill it, he would have killed it right then,” Punk said.“Until anything is official, I don’t want to say either way what he’s thinking or what he’s thinking. But yeah, I’m pretty confident that it’ll be in the UFC.”

“I told him I want to fight again,” Punk said. “We’re back at it. We’re back to the drawing board. So, it’s up to him. He floated me an idea and we’re kind of going back and forth on it right now.”

After the contest Punk was visibly emotional, but it wasn’t due to the fact that he feared his lifelong dream was coming to an abrupt end after the lopsided defeat, but because he simply couldn’t get the job done for himself and his team:

“The UFC just made me a business offer,” said Punk. “I wasn’t emotional, because I saw that something was over. I was just bummed that I lost.”

The former professional wrestling star will not retreat to his former occupation, but will instead continue to embark on the grueling road of being a professional mixed martial artists. Even if he has to do it for a promotion that isn’t the UFC:

“This is what I do now,” Punk said he told the UFC boss. “This is what I’m going to do now. If i can do it for you, awesome. If not, I’ll still bug you for tickets to your show.”

Punk has yet to get his next bout as of this writing, and is it still up in the air if the Roufusport team member will even remain with the promotion for the foreseeable future. If the UFC does allow Punk to continue his UFC tenure, who would you like to see the welterweight fight next?
