UFC 212 kicks off in Rio de Janeiro on June 3, 2017 with Jose Aldo taking on Max Holloway in the title fight. Also on the main card is Claudia Gadelha who will slug it out with Karolina Kowalkiewicz. While the night may lack a former middleweight champion, there is much to look forward to at UFC 212. There are a few notable fights in the undercard but let’s see what the main bout in the featherweight division between Aldo and Holloway may be like.

Aldo (26-2) came back to hold the title in November after Conor McGregor was stripped of the title.  However, both Aldo and Holloway (17-3) have some ugly losses to their credit. The former was defeated in 13 seconds while Holloway dropped three clean rounds to McGregor who suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament. That being said, this bout is likely to be one of the best MMA contests so far in 2017.

Aldo is known for his low-risk, striking game and takedown defense that brought him victories against Chad Mendes, Urijah Faber, and Frankie Edgar, to name a few. This has made him one of the greatest fighters of all time where many have failed to build momentum against him. However, Holloway too can match up to Aldo. Following a 3-3 start to his UFC, he slipped to the bottom of the division but slowly worked his way to the top, which included 10 straight wins against a variety of opponents including former champions. Aldo may still be a favorite but there’s always the possibility of Holloway using his finesse and prowess to get the better of him. Holloway is a fighter who likes to pile on the pressure and push a high pace. He’s also got an impressive average of 5.67 significant strikes landed per minute compared to Aldo’s 3.28 per minutes. Aldo does tend to pick and choose his moves at a slower pace.

We should see a great tug of war with both fighters working to their game plan. The fighter that turns out to be more active will have the advantage,  which is why we could potentially see the Hawaiian Holloway get the better of Aldo by a unanimous decision.

Jose Aldo: Conor McGregor Will ‘Never’ Accept A Rematch

Jose Aldo is set to defend his UFC featherweight title against red hot interim champion Max “Blessed” Holloway in the main event of June 3’s UFC 212 from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, but he still receives questions about bitter rival and former champion Conor McGregor, who knocked Aldo out cold in just 13 seconds at Dec. 2015’s UFC 194.

Aldo, however, appears to be focused on the featherweight contenders coming up the ranks, as he recently said that McGregor will ‘never’ accept a rematch:

“It’s good that this subject is being brought up, because nowadays everybody talks about something, and I don’t really understand why,” Aldo told reporters (Via MMAJunkie) in his native Portuguese. “Conor, on the one hand, was good, let’s say. And it’s good to explain that to everyone, because he brought a lot more visibility, both to the division and to me. But, on the other hand, talking about the fight? That’s in the past.

“Everybody goes back and talks about this, if I want (a rematch) or not. It’s not up to me. It’s up to the UFC. And we know that it’s never happening. I don’t even know if he’s fighting again. I ask not just the reporters, but everyone who talks about ‘Aldo …’ This doesn’t exist anymore. The UFC tried to make that fight, and he didn’t accept it, and he never will. Because what happened is never happening again. It’s good to make that clear for everyone.

“I see athletes, reporters, UFC people saying that ‘Aldo wants to fight (McGregor) … Man, there’s no way. He doesn’t want to fight me anymore, and it’s never happening again. And that’s good, because then nobody ever talks about my name or his. I don’t give a damn about what Conor is or isn’t doing. I’m a UFC athlete fighting in the featherweight division. So whoever is coming up the ranks, these are the guys I need to fight, that I have to train for, and get better and better to defend the belt.”

The build-up to UFC 194’s main event between Aldo and McGregor was sensational, and although the outcome of the fight was both shocking and thrilling, it left some fans wanting more.

The “Notorious” one, however, never ended up defending the 145-pound strap, instead electing to take on Nate Diaz in back-to-back bouts before closing out 2016 with a dominant knockout victory over Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205. The win over Alvarez made McGregor the first fighter in promotional history to hold two titles at one time, but he was later stripped of his featherweight belt.

Aldo, on the other hand, bounced back from his loss to McGregor with a one-sided decision victory over Frankie Edgar last July at UFC 200 to become the interim champion, but he was later promoted to undisputed titleholder. Now ready to defend that strap against Holloway, who’s won an incredible 10 straight fights, Aldo knows he has a ‘big challenge’ in front of him:

“Max is a big challenge,” Aldo said. “He’s an opponent I already imagined I could fight. I’m a reference. I’m the target. Everyone wants to be the champion. So I’m always studying every up-and-coming athlete in the division. This will be a test for me, because he’s a young guy, hungry to win, but he’ll be one more to try and not succeed. To me, that’s certain.”

What do you make of Aldo’s comments?

Manager: Belfort ‘Might’ Fight Silva & Sonnen After UFC 212

Vitor Belfort has made it clear that he’ll make his last walk to the Octagon at UFC 212 on June 3, 2017 in his native Brazil when he takes on Nate Marquardt. Vitor Belfort has made it clear that he’ll make his last walk to the Octagon at UFC 212 on June 3, 2017 in his native Brazil when he takes on Nate Marquardt. Earlier this week, however, “The Phenom” revealed that he may continue to compete after his UFC tenure ends.

Recently speaking on the topic, Belfort’s manager, Gustavo Lacerda, said that the former champion ‘has full conditions to continue fighting’ after UFC 212:

“Technically and physically, Vitor has full conditions to continue fighting,” Lacerda recently said on the “MMA Ganhador” podcast, according to MMA Fighting’s Guilherme Cruz. “Of course, he has the hormonal deficiency everybody knows. … But I think he lit up his fire again. We’ll go fight by fight. First, we’ll think about his fight with Nate Marquardt, and then we have more good things ahead.”

Lacerda even suggested that fights against Wanderlei Silva and Chael Sonnen, who will fight each other in the main event of a Bellator pay-per-view (PPV) in New York City on June 24, 2017, ‘might’ be potential options for Belfort:

“What I think it’s possible to imagine is: what does the MMA fan wants? He wants to see Vitor vs. Wanderlei (Silva), wants to see Vitor vs. (Chael) Sonnen. He wants these type of fights. And it’s the type of fights that interests us. Vitor doesn’t need to prove anything regarding to ranking or title. The idea is to have fights that are interesting. Interest the fans, and interest the fighter.”

“I’m particularly crazy to see Vitor vs. Wanderlei. It’s a fight I pay to see. There are fights people want to see, and those are the fights that are interesting. Where it will be, and how it will be, I can’t say anything right now. But they might happen.”

“The Phenom” stopped Silva back at UFC Brazil in 1998 and was scheduled to rematch him in 2012, but the bout fell through. Belfort was also scheduled to face off with Sonnen in 2014, but that bout never came to fruition either. Having expressed his interest in the creation of a ‘legends league’, these bouts may make sense for an aging Belfort.

Perhaps “The Phenom” could be headed to Bellator after UFC 212?
