It looks like Jose Aldo will once again get his chance at reclaiming the 145-pound throne.

UFC 218 was originally set to be headlined by an interesting 145-pound match-up between champion Max Holloway and former lightweight king Frankie Edgar. Unfortunately “The Answer” was forced out of the bout due to an injury, forcing the UFC to scramble and find a replacement to take on “Blessed.” Per a report from MMA Fighting, it looks like Jose Aldo will serve as that replacement.

At one point in time Aldo was the only champion in the history of the UFC’s featherweight division, until Conor McGregor downed the Brazilian in just 13 seconds back in December of 2015. Aldo would go on to win an interim featherweight belt against Frankie Edgar at UFC 200, and was later promoted the undisputed champion after McGregor was forced to vacate his 145-pound crown.

Yet another interim featherweight champion was crowned in Max Holloway, who defeated Anthony Pettis to set up a unification bout with “Scarface” in Brazil. Holloway pulled off the upset by finishing Aldo in the third round of their fight via TKO, making himself the third-ever champion in the division’s history.

Now Aldo will get his chance at redemption against the Hawaiian champ, who is currently riding a ridiculous 11-fight win streak. Aldo was previously scheduled to fight Ricardo Lamas at UFC on FOX 26 on Dec. 16th, which would’ve been his first non-title bout since 2009.

Holloway and Aldo will now meet in the main event of UFC 218 on pay-per-view (PPV) from the Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Michigan on December 2, 2017.

The UFC’s next PPV (pay-per-view) event has taken a major hit by losing its main event.

The big news on Wednesday was the withdrawal of former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar from his upcoming UFC featherweight title bout against current champion Max Holloway in the main event of UFC 218.

Edgar has since taken to his official Instagram account to comment on pulling out of the fight after he suffered a facial injury that will require surgery in training.

Combate first reported that UFC featherweight contender was injured. Several other outlets confirmed the report. The UFC has not yet commented on the news.

According to Edgar, the injury is only a minor setback and that he will be back to full-contract training in six weeks. Make no mistake about it, he still has his sights set on Halloway.

According to a report by MMAFighting.com’s Ariel Helwani, Holloway will likely remain on the UFC 218 fight card. However, as of this writing, there’s no word yet on who will take Edgar’s place and challenge “Blessed” for the 145-pound title.

A few names have emerged as potential challengers such as Cub Swanson, who is a longtime challenger and has fought Holloway before, as he was quick to offer his services when he heard Edgar was out.

Holloway won the title with a second-round stoppage over Jose Aldo in the UFC 212 main event in Brazil this past summer, which extended his 11-fight winning streak.

On the flip side, Edgar is on a two-fight winning streak and coming off a win to rising star Yair Rodriguez by TKO on the UFC 211 main card.

UFC 218 is set to take place on on Saturday, December 2, 2017, at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Michigan. The main card will air on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET while the preliminary card will air on FOX Sports 1 at 8 p.m. ET and the promotion’s streaming service, UFC Fight Pass, at 6:15 p.m. ET.

Francis Ngannou vs. Alistair Overeem in a heavyweight bout will serve as the co-main event.

Frankie Edgar out of UFC 218 Main Event Title Fight with Max Holloway

Frankie Edgar‘s Cinderella Man storyline was one of the most interesting parts of the UFC 218 card. Unfortunately, the event will have to plug on without him with the news that Edgar has withdrawn from his featherweight title bout with Max Holloway due to an injury suffered while training.

The news was first reported by Combate (per MMAFighting.com’s Ariel Helwani), which was then confirmed by Edgar himself on social media:

It’s tough news for Edgar. Despite standing as one of the most enduring names in the featherweight division, The Answer is 36 years old at this point and holds the record for most time logged in the Octagon.

While he may remain an elite talent he only has so many minutes left in his career, and with so many up-and-coming featherweights set to throw down over the coming weeks, there is no guarantee he will remain the top contender in six weeks’ time.

This is also a drag for Holloway, who has defeated every top 145-pound fighter except Edgar, but it isn’t a huge blow for him as he will still remain atop the UFC 219 card. There are a handful of interesting potential replacements in former rivals Jose Aldo and Cub Swanson, and the contest loses little box office appeal with either of them challenging for the title instead of Edgar.

Regardless of the main event, UFC 218 is set to go down on December 2 in Detroit, Michigan. Expect the new challenger to be officially announced in the coming days.
