This past weekend, UFC 222, which is slated for March 3, 2018, in Las Vegas, Nevada, took a major hit, as it was announced that featherweight champion Max Holloway had suffered an injury that would force him out of his scheduled main event bout with Frankie Edgar.

Since then, the UFC has been scrambling to find a new headliner.

A potential bantamweight title rematch between champion TJ Dillashaw and Cody Garbrandt has been discussed, but Dillashaw, who’s gunning for a super fight with 125-pound king Demetrious Johnson has shown little interest.

“No Love”, however, who’s hell-bent on recapturing the 135-pound throne, has offered to give Dillashaw a ‘cut’ of his purse to make the fight happen:

“I’ll give him a cut of my purse if he wants it, if the UFC doesn’t want to compensate him,” Garbrandt said today on The MMA Hour. “It’s not about money for me, it’s about principle. It’s about getting my title back. I’m healthy. OK, we both haven’t been training — OK, cool. Four weeks, we’re fighters at the end of the day. We’re gonna fight. If he wants a cut of my purse, I’ll give [it to] him. If it’s money for him, OK.”

Edgar also made it clear that he’d like to remain on the card, offering an open to challenge to any fighter willing to step up:

Garbrandt then made it clear that he’d be a willing challenger:

Would you like to see Edgar and Garbrandt main event UFC 222?

Nate Diaz could be the savior that the UFC needs for their upcoming pay-per-view event.

UFC President Dana White and other officials are scrambling for a main event for UFC 222.

It’s well known by now that UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway is unable to make his scheduled title defense against Frankie Edgar at the PPV event because of a leg injury that the champion suffered.

The promotion is no stranger to this problem as they have done on numerous times in the past. Whether it’s because of a suspension or injury. Diaz is also no stranger to stepping up and accepting a fight on short notice.

A perfect example of that is his first fight with UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor. As a result of this decision, it sparked a rivalry and made both of these fighters a lot of money.

Although Diaz may not be able to get the kind of cash he would get with a bout with McGregor, he is still a big name and can draw on PPV, which the promotion needs badly right now.

This leads us to LA Times’ Lance Pugmire noting on Twitter that Diaz is willing to step into the main event of UFC 222.

”The best option to fill in for the Max Holloway void at UFC 222 is Nate Diaz and he tells me he’s 100% interested,” Pugmire wrote. “Make it happen, UFC!”

Diaz has not been seen in the Octagon since his rematch with McGregor back at UFC 202 when he suffered a majority decision loss which came five months after Diaz submitted McGregor in their first bout at UFC 196.

Diaz has been biding his time since a third bout has been off the table with McGregor.

If you recall, just last month, Diaz took to his Instagram account to note that “May, June” time frame could be when he returns to fighting under the UFC banner.

Diaz also mentioned in that post that he was “sick of sitting around” and told fighters to “step your games up.”

The MMA world was dealt collective disappointment yesterday when word arrived that UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway had been forced out of his scheduled UFC 222 main event versus Frankie Edgar.

The tough-as-nails champion wanted to fight no matter what, detailing what he said would go through in order to meet Edgar in a month’s time. But ultimately he simply could not compete in the alotted timeframe.

The UFC set out to replace the March 3 fight card’s main event with two high-profile bouts, seeking to book bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw against former teammate Cody Garbrandt in a rematch of their UFC 217 affair with Edgar then taking on surging contender Brian Ortega in the co-main.

Dillashaw turned the bout down, however, citing the birth of his child and lack of training before mocking ‘No Love’ with a brutal photo from his knockout win last November.

And it remains an uncertain spot for the promotion and the rapidly-approaching event, but the mocking surrounding the card didn’t stop there. UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor got in on the action by trolling Holloway with a photo from his 2013 win over “Blessed”:

When there is no referee to save you.

‘The Notorious’ loves to rub salt in the wounds of his former opponents, yet it’s understandable if fans asked whether he should be doing so with his fighting future still very much up in the air as he acts a fool with his newfound mega-riches from boxing Floyd Mayweather.

This injury is bad timing for Holloway for sure, but the young Hawaiian has been a model of consistency for the UFC during his rise to championship status. He’s also stated he’s willing to take on any and all comers as champion, something that would most likely be true if he wasn’t hurt.

The same simply cannot be said for McGregor, who campaigned for a UFC bout versus Mayweather this week rather than a title defense against the winner of Tony Ferguson vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Is it time for McGregor to stop kicking willing fighters while they’re down and get back to fighting in MMA himself? Did that time pass long ago?

UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway has issued a statement on his withdrawal from UFC 222.

It’s been well documented that the champion had to pull out of the fight due to an injury. He was scheduled to make his next title defense against former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar at UFC 222.

If you recall, this bout was originally scheduled for the UFC 218 pay-per-view event last month. However, Edgar was forced to withdraw from the fight after suffering a broken orbital bone in training.

This led to Holloway fighting Jose Aldo in a rematch, which saw Holloway successfully retain his title with a grisly third-round TKO.

UFC 222 is set to take place on March 3, 2018, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The main card will air on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET while the preliminary card will air on FOX Sports 1 at 8 p.m. ET.

Holloway suffered a leg injury that resulted in him, unfortunately, having to pull out of the fight. He issued the following statement on his official Twitter account about not being able to fight Edgar at this upcoming UFC pay-per-view event:

“I asked the docs if we could cut off my leg then ask the commission if I could fight handicapped. They told me at the end of the day it is what it is… Had dozens of family from Hawaii coming up for this one… I know it sucks but hang in there. We’re going to reschedule asap

I know it sucks but don’t give up on the sport. Card changes have always been part of it. Changes are opportunities for other fighters to get their shot. Surprises are what make this sport unique. Hang on and I’ll find you at the next one

My momma always said MMA cards are like a box of chocolate. You never know what you’re gonna get. I know some surprises suck. But some are good. Stay with me so you don’t miss the good ones brother.”
