Last night’s (Sat., March 3, 2018) UFC 222 from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, was the first time controversial combat sports judge Adelaide Byrd had judged since her laughable score at last September’s Gennady Golovkin vs. Canelo Alvarez boxing match, so it was hardly a surprise that the event featured some questionable split decisions in fights she was judging.

Three bouts she judged in total ended in split decisions, including a questionable 29-28 nod for women’s strawweight Ashley Yoder over Mackenzie Dern, and a 29-28 nod to Cody Stamann in his bantamweight match with Bryan Caraway, a score that was echoed by judge Sal D’Amato to give Stamann a win most media outlets had scored for Caraway.

The fact Byrd presided over the card was announced by Octagon commentator Jon Anik at the beginning of the Stamann vs. Caraway bout (where Anik said Canelo vs. Golvkin was in August 2016, for some reason), and it led to a hilarious exchange between Joe Rogan, Daniel Cormier, and Anik where they made fun of Byrd’s questionable past based on the Canelo vs. GGG decision. Check it out as transcribed by MMA Mania:

Anik: I can tell you boys, that one of the three judges for this fight is one Adalaide Byrd. First time judging since that controversial August 2016 decision in GGG vs. ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, so don’t shoot the messenger.

Rogan: We just both had a heart attack. Oh God, she was driving a Ferrari for that fight.

Daniel Cormier(laughs) Oh my goodness.

Rogan: She’s a nice lady though.

Cormier: She’s a great lady. The other day I saw her at The Ultimate Fighter… (laughs) She’s a very nice lady, let’s just leave it at that.

Rogan: She’s a very nice person. So is my mom, but I wouldn’t want her judging any fights.

Cormier: (Laughs) Oh my goodness, somebody get Joe Rogan! (Laughs) Somebody get Joe Rogan!

Rogan: My mom would be like, “Oh Canelo is handsome! I’ll give him the round.”

(They all laugh)

Then the conversation continued on later in the bout when ‘DC’ hinted that leaving this particular bout in the hands of the judges may not be a good idea:

Cormier: Leaving an impression in the judges’ minds is especially important. Especially… with…

(They all laugh)

Rogan: Don’t say it! Don’t say it! (laughs) We’ve given that lady enough problems.

Rogan caught himself in the second exchange, but the cat was out of the bag after he suggested Byrd was ‘driving a Ferrari’ for her score in the Canelo-Golovkin bout, a statement implying some nefarious connections to her heavily criticized scorecard.

She’s still back judging high-level fights, however, and based on last night’s results, no fighter who lets a contest go to the scorecards is safe.

It’s clear what will be next for UFC women’s featherweight champion Cris Cyborg.

As seen in the main event of Saturday’s (March 3, 2018) UFC 222 event on pay-per-view at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, Cyborg successfully retained her title against newcomer Yana Kunitskaya by picking up a TKO win in the first round.

Now, it appears that a champion vs. champion clash between Cyborg and UFC women’s bantamweight bout Amanda Nunes is just a matter of time from being made official.

As a result of this latest win, not only did she add to her legacy but she was able to record her second consecutive successful defense of her women’s featherweight title.

Following the fight, she addressed a potential fight with Nunes.

“She’s going to fight now, defend her title belt in Brazil in May, I think, and then probably I’m going to fight in July if she wins and is the champion,” Cyborg said of Nunes, who is reported to be defending her own title against Raquel Pennington at UFC 224 on May 12 in Brezil. “And now she’s calling me out, I’m not calling Amanda out. She’s calling me out. And yeah, I could fight her in July.”

“Amanda, she’s the champion at 135,” Cyborg said (transcript courtesy of MMA Fighting). “I respect her being the champion, but I don’t think she fight anybody like me, too. Then she’s going up to 145, I know she’s had a couple of fights at 145 before, but the one thing like I said, I never want to fight a Brazilian, but when I was the champion over in Strikeforce in my division, we never had the opportunity to fight each other because she was never getting close.

“Now she’s the champion at 135, she’s calling me out, OK, let’s do this fight. I’m gonna train and be ready and what she’s going to do for me, I don’t think about this. I just think about what I’m going to do to her.”

“I don’t know, but for me I think it’s going to be too soon,” Cyborg said in regards to the May date. “Because I’m going to Brazil and then I have a lot of things to do. I’m going to adopt and bring my niece with me, and it’s going to be at the end of March, and I accepted this fight (with Kunitskaya) because it’s the beginning of March and it [fit into] my plan. But I don’t know, let’s see, it’d be exciting.”

It should be noted that Nunes-Pennington showdown has yet to be made official by the promotion.

Nunes recently said that the idea of fighting Cyborg was no personal, but she would be open to the fight.

UFC president Dana White is high on the idea of two top female stars meeting in the Octagon.

“(Cyborg)’s a beast,” White said. “The fight to make is her and Nunes. That’s the fight that needs to happen. Nunes wants the fight, she wants the fight, I want the fight, I’m sure the fans want to see it, too, so we’ll get that one going.”

Conor McGregor kept a close eye on one important bout that took place at UFC 222.

Just hours after the fight had ended, he decided to take to social media to give his reaction to it.

As seen in the co-main event of Saturday’s (March 3, 2018) UFC 222 event on pay-per-view at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, Brian Ortega scored a big victory over former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar.

If you recall, McGregor had previously claimed that he offered to step in against Edgar when current UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway pulled out of the scheduled featherweight title fight in the main event.

Unfortunately, UFC President Dana White and other officials decided to not book the fight due to the fact that they didn’t have enough time to promote the fight in order to get the most revenue out of a fight involving McGregor.

McGregor is the former featherweight champion and never lost the belt inside the Octagon after winning it from Jose Aldo.

“Frankie’s career deserved for that to be against me tonight. Respect Frankie.  Love and respect always! A true fighters fighter,” McGregor tweeted.

For those who may not remember, Edgar said earlier this week that he was not aware that McGregor wanted to fight him at UFC 222.

McGregor has not fought in the UFC since beating Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 in November 2016 to win the lightweight title.

As a result of this big win, he became the first person to hold two belts in two different weight classes at the same time in UFC history.
