MMA legend Georges St-Pierre acknowledges that current UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley is one of the best ever. But pump your brakes on crowning him the greatest of all-time just yet.

Woodley toppled formerly undefeated challenger Darren Till with a dominant second-round submission in the featured bout of September 8’s UFC 228. Till landed only one strike in the fight.

The victory lead to Woodley’s coach Din Thomas awarding him his Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt for first UFC submission. It also lead to Thomas claiming Woodley was close to attaining welterweight G.O.A.T. status. Not so fast, however, says the consensus current 170-pound G.O.A.T.

Longtime former UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre spoke in an interview with FanSided to give his opinion on the feverishly-discussed debate. St-Pierre gave respect to Woodley for beating Till, but stopped short of crowning him the greatest 170 pounds had ever seen:

“The greatest is hard to say; there is also another guy named Matt Hughes who at one point was one of the greatest,” St-Pierre said. “There are some fighters, I’m not saying Tyron Woodley is one of these guys; he is an incredible fighter, but there are guys in this sport sometimes they become champion and they have an easier time than others in terms of opponent, in terms of challenges.”

Strength Of Opponents

St-Pierre defended his title nine times to Woodley’s three and one retention due to a draw.

So Woodley is one of the best ever at welterweight, but his overall body of work still pales in comparison to that of “GSP.” St-Pierre appeared to throw some shade at Woodley’s challenges in the previous quote, yet clarified that by respecting ‘The Chosen One’s’ opponents shortly after.

St-Pierre believes Woodley is in a good spot in terms of legacy because of it:

“Tyron had to go through great fighters like Stephen Thompson and his last performance was outstanding against Darren Till. There was a lot of hype on Darren Till because he was undefeated. Tyron just shut him down incredibly good. Tyron is in a good way in terms of legacy and in terms of being the greatest.”

There is a conceivable way to find out just whom is the best welterweight of all-time, and that’s for them to fight.

However, ‘Rush’ recently discussed why he doesn’t want to fight Woodley right now. He believes he stands little to gain in terms of legacy and popularity, while Woodley stands to gain everything in both. That could be true from a certain point of view.

St-Pierre has been out of action since he won the UFC middleweight title by submitting Michael Bisping in the main event of last November’s UFC 217 from Madison Square Garden. He vacated the title shortly thereafter and has been linked to a new comeback fight. There are whispers he’ll face the winner of October 6’s Khabib Nurmagomeov vs. Conor McGregor lightweight title bout.

Nothing is official, of course, and St-Pierre’s return is beyond up in the air. Just don’t count on it being against Woodley.

Khabib’s Manager Reveals Ultra-Personal Blowup With Conor McGregor

It’s no secret that Conor McGregor is a master at getting into his opponents’ heads. That has now extended to Khabib’s manager heading into his awaited showdown with Nurmagomedov at UFC 229.

McGregor finally made his first press appearance opposite Khabib at this week’s UFC 229 press conference from New York City. In an over-the-top scene, a whiskey-drinking McGregor sounded off on a litany of topics. He blamed Khabib for his controversial New York bus attack this April. He took a few more shots at Khabib’s father Abdulmanap and even issued a few death threats at the current champ.

But the most personal of all of McGregor’s barbs was perhaps directed at Khabib’s manager Ali Abdelaziz. After the normal staredown to end the presser, McGregor laid into Abdelaziz with a seething assessment of his personal affairs.

McGregor reportedly blasted the prominent manager by calling him a ‘terrorist’ and a ‘snitch’ among other things:

“Shut your mouth, Ali Abdelaziz! Mad terrorist. Terrorist snitch. I know a lot about you as well, you mad rat! I know a lot about you as well. You keep your mouth shut, kid. Let me take my picture. How’s Noah? How’s Noah? Huh? Yeah. Shut your mouth! Never speak about me ever in your life. Watch yourself around me because you’ll be out of here quick.”

“**** you! Fool! Don’t come at the king. Don’t ever come at the king.”

The Noah in question is a son that Abdelaziz reportedly abandoned when he became an informant for the NYPD. Abdelaziz allegedly owes $50,000 in back child support to Noah and his mother.

What Prompted It?

Abdelaziz recently revealed to Anatomy of a Fighter just what he said to McGregor to spark the personal blowup. Apparently, he just asked McGregor why he showed up to the presser with the belt when he had been stripped:

“I just said why he have belt. That’s it. I said that. Why he have belt?”

McGregor is acting more aggressive than ever before heading into UFC 229, and that’s saying a lot. There’s a mixed, highly polarized view of just what that actually means in terms of the fight.

But one thing is certain. The Irish megastar is trying to make things as personal as possible with anyone involved with Khabib in order to gain any mental advantage he can. Abdelaziz’s personal history may sound a bit seedy to those looking in from the outside.

It seems McGregor did his research to find just how deep that went. Will it help or hurt him come October?

Yesterday, the mixed martial arts (MMA) world was subject to one of its biggest-ever spectacles with New York City’s UFC 229 presser featuring Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor.

The first media event for October 6’s megafight between the current and former lightweight champions was an odd one to be certain. McGregor came out guns blazing just like he did throughout his promotional World Tour opposite Floyd Mayweather last year. The Irish star unveiled his motivation for coming back to battle ‘The Eagle’ before blaming his infamous UFC 223 bus attack on the Russian champ.

McGregor was also seen guzzling his brand-new Irish Whiskey Proper Twelve. So much so, in fact, that several onlookers among the wide reactions on social media thought he was overcompensating for perceived fear. The normally stoic Nurmagomedov had his own views of McGregor’s alcohol use, predictably choosing to stay focused on the fight. Buoyed at least in part by his own brand of the hard stuff, McGregor went off on a litany of personal topics from making death threats to ripping Khabib’s father.

Overall, it was a press event that was called the “darkest he’d ever been to” by UFC President Dana White. That’s saying a lot.

What’s In The Staredown?

So after the somber, strange UFC 229 presser, who is actually in whose head?

Fans seem to be torn down the middle on social media. They have their separate claims and justifications why McGregor or Khabib now holds the distinct mental advantage. Khabib and McGregor came face-to-face in the traditional UFC 229 presser staredown. Again Khabib was statuesque while McGregor as animated as always. Again people had polar opposite views on what that meant.

We knew McGregor would be looking to return with a bang. However, it may have seemed like he was trying too hard like he was during the final legs of his World Tour with Mayweather.

True, his whiskey will be one of the official sponsors of UFC 229. It’s a fine line to walk between focusing on promoting your new booze and fighting the man who many feel is the most dominant force in MMA right now. There’s the school of thought that McGregor is focused after staying out of the media until now.

We also knew Khabib would be as stoic as a rock. Trash talk has never been his forte or focus. He simply stared right through McGregor during the staredown. He’s done that with all of his previous opponents. Each opponent went down in a similar fashion, regardless of his perceived deficiencies in the cage. “The Eagle” appeared a bit miffed at McGregor’s comments at times; it’s true.

That could just serve to galvanize his resolve, however. That, of course, is the last thing McGregor needs. Overall, it just looked like McGregor was trying too hard as he was during the Brooklyn leg of his Mayweather tour.

If that comes back to bite him when they finally throw down, we’ll have to wait and see. Who – if anyone – is in whose head after the UFC 229 presser?

Conor McGregor claims it’s actually Khabib Nurmagomedov who is responsible for his infamous New York bus attack in April.

McGregor sounded off on the frightening scene that ultimately forced three fights off of April’s UFC 223. While the Irish megastar was jailed on assault charges, he says it was Nurmagomedov’s fault.

Sounding off at today’s UFC 229 Press Conference from New York City, McGregor said he spoke the truth when all he did was present himself for a fair fight at the Barclays Center last April.

When Khabib didn’t come out of the bus before UFC 223, he caused McGregor’s assault where he threw a metal dolly through a bus to happen:

“The truth. Because that’s all I talk. That all I talk, truth. Smash me, mate. Smash me! You say, “send location,” here he is right in front of ya. I’m right in front of ya! Did you not see me outside the bus, no? Did you not see outside in front of the f*****’ bus? I showed you may hands, no weapons. The first thing I showed up at this bus, I showed him my hands to let him know I come here unarmed, no weapons. No weapons, step off the bus. You talked a big game, now I’m here.

He done f*****’ nuthin. He sat and took a s*** on the bus. Hid and cowered behind f*****’ women and caused what happened to happen. So, that’s f*****’ that.”

Nurmagomedov often wondered why McGregor would not have simply gave him his location to fight him fair and square. To that, McGregor said he knew his location now and still did nothing:

“Here’s my location you little fool. Right in front of you. Do somethin’ about it! Yeah, you’ll do nothin’!

Saddle up, fight fans. It’s about to be a wild ride.

It’s time Conor McGregor reveals the real reason he came back to fight Khabib Nurmagomedov at October 6’s UFC 229 from Las Vegas, Nevada.

As expected, McGregor wasted little time getting the trash talk building with Khabib at today’s UFC 229 Press Conference from New York City. He dove right into why he was returning to shut up his rival champion Nurmagomedov after their highly-publicized beef in New York earlier this year.

McGregor claimed that Khabib cowered when faced with even numbers. He’s back for the love of war, and can’t wait to put a bad beating on ‘The Eagle’:

“I came back for the love of this. To come and shut this man up. A little rat, a little weasel, a little hard man in groups. I’ve met many of them through my years. A man who grows in numbers. But on his own and when confronted in a similar situation, cowers away.

And that’s what you saw with that little shite on the bus over there. He s*** his jocks after doing something to his own countrymen that nothing got to do with any of this. And that’s it. I came back for the love of fighting and the love of war and I am going to truly, truly love putting a bad, bad beating on this little glass-jaw rat!”

Friendship Gone Wrong

The media asked him about how his rivalry with Khabib began after the two were cordial in years past. To that, McGregor said Khabib was simply a fanboy who “bought his t-shirts.” The Dagestani then got cocky when an investor began pouring money into his gym according to the Irish former champ:

“Fanboy! The man was a fanboy. He bought t-shirts of mine. He f***** supported the cause. You remember that? You little fanboy, you little fanboy b****. He bought t-shirts to support the cause, nothing but respect. And then, and then, over in his neck of the woods, a man involved ins something, who is now in prison, Vladimir Putin locked him up for embezzling $150 million worth of money from the Russian people, started to invest and pump money into his gym.

“So he started to grow in power, started to grow in power, started to gain this false power, started thinking he was a little hard man, tough guy. Then the s*** hit the fan with ya, man. He gets locked up and now there’s not a bean left. And now I’m here to put the nail in the coffin. That’s how it began. He was a fanboy. Thought he was a little hard man with some money like many people do. Money and numbers.”

McGregor held fast to his claim that Khabib wasn’t so tough on his own. He acknowledged that his team still supported him, but claimed the wildly popular current champion had actually been abandoned by his own people:

“Now the money’s gone, the numbers are still there, but trust me, his own countrymen, his own people, they wanna see him gone do. And I am gonna do it in the name of the Russian people.”
