Dana White: Conor McGregor Might As Well Be Part Owner

Conor McGregor may not be an owner, but he’s making owner money!

Conor McGregor might as well be a part owner of the UFC.

After his last appearance inside the Octagon in 2016, McGregor was very vocal about wanting to take a stake of ownership in the promotion. All that talk seemed to hush down around the time he signed on to box Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Now, two years removed from his last UFC fight, “The Notorious” is set to make his return to the cage. He’ll attempt to reclaim the lightweight throne from undefeated rival Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229 in Las Vegas.

The fight will go down from the T-Mobile Arena on October 6th. McGregor noted several months ago that a share of equity would be part of the requirements to lure him back into the Octagon. Luckily for UFC President Dana White, things didn’t have to go that far. The UFC boss revealed on Tuesday that McGregor is not a part owner of the world’s largest combat sporting promotion.

He did say, however, that he might as well be with the money the company is paying him to fight (quotes via MMA Mania):

“He’s not a part owner,” White said. “He might as well be though. He’s making so much ******* money. He’s making so much ******* money he might as well be a part owner.”

And that could only be the beginning. There are much bigger fights on the horizon as a possibility for McGregor. A trilogy fight with Nate Diaz, a possible clash with Georges St-Pierre, or even a potential run at the welterweight title.

If there’s one thing the MMA world has learned about Conor McGregor, it’s that anything can happen. His paycheck to fight Nurmagomedov on October 6th may only be a fraction of what’s possible for his future endeavors.

Dana White Shoots Down GSP’s Conor/Khabib Ambitions

Dana White just shut down rumors of Georges St-Pierre fighting the winner of Conor McGregor vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov.

St-Pierre has said on several occasions that he is considering a drop down to lightweight. The Canadian wants to become the first fighter in UFC history to win three titles in different weight classes.

With the possibility of St-Pierre contending for a lightweight title, there’s a legitimate chance he could end up fighting Conor McGregor.

McGregor is a former featherweight and lightweight champion in the UFC. He was stripped of his 155-pound title earlier this year due to inactivity.

“The Notorious One” hasn’t competed inside the Octagon since November of 2016. That was when McGregor knocked out Eddie Alvarez to win the lightweight title at UFC 205.

McGregor took a significant amount of time off to enjoy the birth of his first child and partake in a boxing exhibition fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. After a losing effort against “Money” inside the squared circle, the Irishman is ready to return home inside the cage.

McGregor will make his UFC return in Las Vegas on October 6th. He will cap-off a legitimate rivalry with 155-pound champion Khabib Nurmagomedov. Many are predicting it will be the biggest fight in the history of the UFC.

In regards to St-Pierre possibly fighting the winner, many are expecting that to be the UFC’s next move – especially if McGregor emerges victorious. That has potential to do ridiculous pay-per-view (PPV) numbers.

UFC President Dana White spoke to the media after yesterday’s (Tues. August 7, 2018) Dana White’s Contender Series taping. White seems to have a gripe with “GSP’s” history of vacating titles. He said it’s unlikely St-Pierre gets a shot at the winner of Nurmagomedov vs. McGregor (quotes via MMA Junkie):

“Yeah, that’s probably not going to happen,” White said. “He gave up the 170-pound belt, he gave up the 185-pound belt. I mean it’s like – no. Pick a division.”

As for when MMA fans can expect to see GSP return, White doesn’t have a clear answer yet. He admitted that a card in Toronto would be ideal:

“No, we haven’t talked, but it sounds like we will,” White said. “Toronto makes sense. Toronto wouldn’t be bad.”

Dana White Predicts Conor vs. Khabib Will Smash UFC PPV Record

There’s little doubt that the upcoming Conor vs. Khabib megafight at UFC 229 will be one of the biggest fights in MMA history.

Just how big remains to be seen.

McGregor already owns the record for most pay-per-view (PPV) buys sold for his anticipated rematch with Nate Diaz at 2016’s UFC 202. That card sold 1.6 million buys, and he also owns the Nos. 2 and 3 spots. The infamous Irishman brought in 1.3 million buys apiece for his initial meeting with Diaz at UFC 196 and his title win over Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205.

UFC President Dana White thinks McGregor will smash that record when he faces Nurmagomedov at UFC 229 in October. Speaking to TSN Sports‘ Aaron Bronsteter, White believes the biggest fight of the year will bring two million:

“We’re looking at two million pay-per-view buys. There was really no problems putting this fight together. It’s what makes Conor McGregor such an international superstar. This guy fights anybody, anywhere, any time. After a two-year layoff, he comes right out of the gate and wants Khabib and Khabib, who’s undefeated and obviously destroyed everybody in front of him, wants this fight now and wants to defend his title against Conor McGregor.”

There’s a good chance of Conor vs. Khabib breaking the UFC record for PPV buys; that much is certain.

But hitting the never-before-seen watermark of two million buys is another thing altogether. With UFC PPV sales at an all-time low, it may take quite the promotion to make the card reach such a level.

And with less than two months remaining until fight time, it may be tough to build that kind of hype.

Do you agree with White’s optimistic prediction for the massive event?
