On the heels of Derrick Lewis challenging Daniel Cormier for the heavyweight title at UFC 230, we wanted to get a deeper look at some possible match-ups that we maybe never knew we wanted to see.

As the UFC and MMA celebrate 25 years of success, one thing remains the same today as it did on that fateful night in November 1993.

Fans love compelling characters.

Perhaps there is no more charismatic fighter competing today than “The Black Beast”. Lewis parlayed his most remarkable come-from-behind KO win over Alexander Volkov into a heavyweight title shot against “DC” at UFC 230. That’s not to say Lewis isn’t deserving this opportunity. He has gone 12-3 in his UFC career, beating nine of his last 10 opponents during that stretch.

It remains to be seen if Lewis can cash in as a sizable underdog at UFC 230. But given the recent unpredictability of matchmaking in MMA, anything seems possible as of late. That is precisely why we here at LowkickMMA have created our list of seven MMA fights you never knew you wanted to see…until now.

Ryan Bader vs. Stipe Miocic

You probably never thought about Bader and Miocic fighting in the heavyweight division until now.

With the recent emergence of Bader in the Bellator Heavyweight Grand Prix, the former Arizona State wrestler could become Bellator’s first fighter to hold two titles simultaneously.

Moreover, a fight between Bader and Miocic definitely has me interested. Both guys have similar wrestling pedigrees, Bader with a slight advantage, and their hands are comparable as well, with Miocic holding the edge in that department.

At this point in their careers, a fight between these two may be wishful thinking. But if Bader does return to the Octagon to close his career out, or if Miocic takes his talents to the Bellator cage, we could see this fight play out right before our eyes.

Daniel Cormier Thinks He Could Still Keep Light Heavyweight Title If He Loses At UFC 230

Daniel Cormier is also claiming that he’s still the UFC light heavyweight champion.

Daniel Cormier thinks that he could still keep the UFC light heavyweight title even if he loses to Derrick Lewis.

This is an interesting fight for DC and some could even say that this is the easiest fight of his pro-MMA career. Cormier will defend his heavyweight belt against the hard-hitting veteran in the main event of UFC 230. As of this moment, technically, Cormier is still the current light heavyweight champion.

However, he won’t be for the champion for the division for much longer as the UFC has other plans. Jon Jones and Alexander Gustafsson meet for the vacant title come UFC 232 later this year. The promotion plans to strip Cormier of the title right before this show.

In the mind of Cormier, he thinks that the reason the UFC is stripping of the belt is due to their belief he has no current plans to defend it. However, if he loses to Lewis then that could all change because he would no longer be the heavyweight champ.

“Because if I lose to Derrick, then who is to say I don’t go, ‘Hey, I’m gonna go defend my light heavyweight title. Now you can’t take it,’” Cormier said to MMAFighting. “Maybe that adds a whole other part to the equation. You can’t take both of my belts if I lost that one. Right? So do I really have that much to lose if I have a second one? Look at it like that.”

Cormier has a certain plan in mind as he wants to beat Lewis then defend the heavyweight title against Brock Lesnar in early 2019.

With him already planning to retire in March, his fight against Lesnar would likely be his final bout. However, those plans could all change if he loses to Lewis.

“I am the light heavyweight champion until those guys fight,” Cormier said of Jones and Gustafsson. “So if the light heavyweight champion loses his heavyweight title and goes, ‘Wait I’m willing to defend my belt,’ now we have some conversations to have.”

Chris Weidman issues a message to fellow former UFC middleweight champion Luke Rockhold after he pulled out of their fight. They were supposed to fight for a second time at the upcoming UFC 230 pay-per-view event. However, it got nixed once it was revealed that Rockhold was out due to an injury.

Their first fight went down back at the UFC 194 with the middleweight title on the line in December of 2015 that saw Rockhold beat Weidman by TKO to win the championship.

Now, Weidman will fight Ronaldo Souza in the co-main event of this show. Weidman has been out of action for more than a year now due to a thumb injury he sustained during his last fight against Kelvin Gastelum in July 2017.

Although they have fought once before, it appears that there is no bad blood between them. In fact, it seems like they are on good terms these days. Thus, when the news was made of Rockhold being out of this fight, Weidman sent him some well wishes. The former UFC middleweight champ issued the following statement on his official Twitter account:

“I was really looking forward to fighting Luke in this rematch but unfortunately it wasn’t in the cards this time around. This is a tough sport. I’m hoping and praying Luke makes a quick recovery and returns to good health.”

The UFC 230 pay-per-view event is set to take place on Saturday, November 3, 2018 at Madison Square Garden in Manhattan, New York City with the main card airing on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET while the preliminary card will air on FOX Sports 1 at 8 p.m. ET and the promotion’s streaming service, UFC Fight Pass.
