The UFC women’s bantamweight division was once again the centre of attention at UFC on FOX 20. This time it was a battle for the rights to a potential title fight with Amanda Nunes on the line, as Holly Holm and Valentina Shevchenko led the Chicago based card. Many had pegged ‘The Preacher’s Daughter’ for victory with the recent memory of the shocking knockout over Ronda Rousey is mind, but it was yet another underdog victory on the cards in Illinois.
‘The Bullet’ was on form, bouncing back from her UFC 196 loss to Nunes with a convincing five round decision over Holm. What was even more surprising was that Shevchenko bossed the fight in the stand up against the former boxing and kickboxing world champion. Although the fight may have lacked the sheer entertainment factor, the result holds a lot of weight in terms of the title picture. Well, at least you’d think so.
Although victorious over the former champ, the current queen Amanda Nunes isn’t sold on Shevchenko’s rights to a title fight. Check out ‘The Lioness’ on Twitter last night, claiming ‘The Bullet’ should fight Julianna Pena to decide the next contender at 135:
So by the sounds of it Amanda Nunes either has another opponent in mind, or is happy to wait for another fight to take place before defending her title. Is the potential of a Ronda Rousey comeback in 2016 playing on Nunes’ mind? By all accounts that’s looking a little unlikely, and the rest of the top 10 contender’s at women’s bantamweight are either tied up, coming off losses or simply undeserving of a title shot at this stage.
With Nunes holding a decision win over Shevchenko on March 5, is she right in thinking ‘The Bullet’ should fight again before a title crack? The more things change, the more they stay the same. The female 135-pound division is possible in need of some new blood, or maybe just the original life and soul of the weight class Ronda Rousey.
Stay tuned.

UFC on FOX 20 goes down this Saturday July 23 from the United Center in Chicago, Illinois. Of course it’s weigh-ins day here at LowKickMMA, and the goods on offer indicate the FOX card could be one of the biggest sleepers of the year. Headlining the action is former women’s bantamweight champion Holly Holm, looking to get back on track after a submission loss to Miesha Tate at UFC 196.
Facing ‘The Preacher’s Daughter’ is an up and coming force in the division. Valentina Schevchenko headlines her first UFC card and will also come up against a seriously dangerous striker in Holm. How about the lightweight co-main event between Edson Barboza and the returning Gilbert Melendez? The two exciting strikers will pit technique against sheer will and grit in what could easily be fight of the night.
Heavyweights Francis Ngannou and Bojan Mihajlovic will do battle, and women’s strawweights Felice Herrig and Kailin Curran will no doubt put on a great show.
So join us for the live streaming official weigh-ins at 5PM ET, or check in a few hours prior (the early weigh-ins will have the updated results) or right after to catch the replay!

Fans of the light-heavyweight showdown on July 23 between Anthony Johnson and Glover Teixira were disappointed to learn that ‘Rumble’ recently dropped from the card due to family issues. The Brazilian ‘GT’ stated he was willing to remain on the card, and Alexander Gustafsson instantly threw his name in the mix to replace Johnson.
The bad news for fight fans continue, as we learn from a report on MMAFighting.com, that Teixeira will not be fighting on the Chicago card at all. Clearly either unable to find a suitable replacement, or perhaps preferring a reschedule of the original 205-pound burner with ‘Rumble,’ or maybe even ‘GT’ changed his mind, but apparently it’s just not happening now.
After losing back-to-back decisions to Phil Davis and Jon Jones, Teixeira has gone on a three fight spree that includes a submission win over Ovince St-Preux and knockout finishes against Patrick Cummins and most recently former champion Rashad Evans.
Anthony Johnson came unstuck in his UFC 187 title tilt with Daniel Cormier for the vacant strap, but has since redeemed himself with knockout wins over Jimi Manuwa and Ryan Bader. The FOX aired card goes ahead without a co-main event at present, and is headlined by former champion Holy Holm in a bantamweight battle with Valentina Schevchenko.
Stay tuned for more updates. Here’s how the UFC on FOX 20 card looks now:

Top UFC light heavyweight Glover Teixeira made a splash when he called out fellow former title challenger Anthony “Rumble” Johnson following his electric first-round knockout of former champion Rashad Evans in the main event of April 16’s UFC on FOX 19 from Tampa, Florida.
And while “Rumble” may be looking for his next title shot after two straight knockouts over Ryan Bader and Jimi Manuwa following his failed title bid against current champion Daniel Cormier at UFC 187, it appears as if UFC President Dana White is coming through on his statement that Johnson vs. Teixeira ‘interests him,’ as it was revealed on UFC Tonight that the bout is being targeted for July 23’s UFC on FOX 20 from the United Center in Chicago, Illinois.
Both fighters come in with a ton of momentum from their recent win streaks, with Johnson having the aforementioned two straight victories to run his UFC record to an impressive 5-1 since returning to the promotion in April 2014, while Teixeira has scored three straight finishes over Ovince Saint Preux, Patrick Cummins, and Evans after a two-fight slide against Jon Jones and Phil Davis.
So UFC on FOX 20 could potentially feature a bout for the next light heavyweight title fight from The United Center. Who would you pick in this match-up of lethal 205-pound knockout sluggers?
After former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Holly Holm was denied a rematch with Miesha Tate following ‘Cupcake’s’ fifth-round submission win in their first match-up at March 5’s UFC 196, the fighting future of ‘The Preacher’s Daughter’ was left up in the air a bit.
There was always the awaited rematch with Ronda Rousey, the dominant former champion whom Holm shockingly knocked out with a jaw-dropping head kick at last November’s UFC 193, and even though the rematch had obviously lost some luster since neither fighter holds the belt right now, it remained Holm’s most lucrative option.
But for Holm, a true fighter who (perhaps hastily) wanted to put her title on the line against Tate rather than wait an uncertain amount of time for Rousey to return, sitting on the sidelines didn’t seem an option. Former Rousey opponent Cat Zingano was also brought up as an option for ‘The Preacher’s Daughter,’ but when ‘Alpha’ signed on to face rising contender Julianna Pena at July 9’s UFC 200, that was ruled out as an option as well.
Tonight (Wed., May 4, 2016), however, news has come on UFC Tonight that Holm is being targeted for a main event bout against No. 9-ranked contender Valentina Shevchenko at July 23’s UFC Chiecago:
In the works for #UFCChicago: Gilbert Melendez vs. Edson Barboza, ‘Rumble’ Johnson vs. Glover Teixeira, Holly Holm vs. Valentina Shevchenko
The touted “Bullet’” just lost to current title contender Amanda Nunes at UFC 196. Prior to that, Shevchenko edged former Strikeforce champ Sarah Kaufman by split decision in her debut at last year’s UFC on FOX 17
The rumored bout is a match tailor-made for 17-time world boxing champion Holm and decorated 56-2 Muay Thai fighter Shevchenko, who owns wins over women’s strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk in that sport. With both fighters’ ground games garnering recent criticism, this fight could be a perfect opportunity for both women to put on a show in their glaring area of strength.
The fight is reportedly slated to join a light heavyweight bout between top contenders Anthony “Rumble” Johnson and Glover Teixeira, and also a lightweight bout between the rising Edson Barboza and returning veteran Gilbert Melendez.
