In the main event, Aleksei Oleinik pulled off an amazing first-round submission victory over fellow UFC veteran Mark Hunt. The pair had a nice little slugfest early on, but once Oleinik got the action to the ground, it was all over for “The Super Samoan.”

Replacing suspended former champion Fabricio Werdum, fan favorite slugger Mark Hunt met Russian submission expert Aleksei Oleinik in the main event of today’s (Sat., Sept. 15, 2018) UFC Fight Night 136 from Olympic Stadium in Moscow, Russia.

The 44-year-old Hunt came into the fight having lost two of his last three to Curtis Blaydes and Alistair Overeem with a TKO win over Derrick Lewis sandwiched in between. Oleinik, on the other hand, had won three of his previous UFC bouts by submission, including two by his now-famous Ezekiel Choke. He, too, had lost to surging challenger Blaydes.

The competitors were two of the most seasoned vets in all of the UFC, with an insane 95 professional bouts between them (not including Hunt’s extensive kickboxing resumé).

But they couldn’t have been more polar opposites in terms of style. With Hunt one of the UFC’s most powerful strikers and Oleinik an expert grappler, the stage was set with a classic striker vs. grappler match for the main event of the UFC’s debut on Russian soil. The bout promised to be a potentially explosive – or possibly subdued – main event in Moscow. It turned out to be the former.

Round One:

The headliner began with a strong low kick from Hunt. Oleinik answered with a glancing right hand over the top. He snapped a push kick to Hunt’s knee and the Samoan missed on a punch. Hunt slapped a leg kick and avoided a looping shot from Oleinik. Hunt then landed a huge punch that Oleinik somehow stayed upright from.

The leg kicks kept scoring from Hunt. He scored with a left hook. Oleinik’s left leg was badly bruised and battered from the leg kicks. Hunt scored a right hand as a hindered Oleinik rushed in. But then the tide turned. Oleinik landed some hard shots of his own and wobbled Hunt. Oleinik shot for a takedown that Hunt first avoided, but the Russian persevered to ground “The Super Samoan” and take his back. Oleinik sought a rear-naked choke and locked it on tight, earning the immediate tap from Hunt.

Amazing performance from “The Boa Constrictor,” who earned an incredible 45th submission win of his career by surviving some big damage from Hunt early on.

Final Result: Aleksei Oleinik def. Mark Hunt via R1 submission (rear-naked choke, 4:26)

In the co-main event of today’s fight card 26-year-old Ukrainian fighter, Nikita Krylov faced off with Poland’s Jan B?achowicz in a pivotal light heavyweight fight.

Krylov comes into the contest on an impressive four-fight winning streak. This will be the first fight in Ktylov’s second stint with the UFC. B?achowicz, 35, comes into Moscow riding a nice three fight win streak of his own. He most recently defeated hard-hitting Brit Jimi Manuwa via unanimous decision earlier this year.

Round One

These guys waste no time. Krylov pushes forward in typical fashion, and B?achowicz stands his ground. Krylov lands a sneaky trip and ends up in B?achowicz closed guard. Krylov is having a hard time landing any significant strikes due to B?achowicz good defense. B?achowicz scrambles and gets top control, Krylov looks for a choke but loses his grip. B?achowicz is demonstrating some strong top control. He passes to side control and picks his shots on Krylov. B?achowicz should win round one.

Round two

Round two starts with a fist bump followed by a push kick from Krylov. B?achowicz sidesteps the kick but finds himself defending an ankle lock. B?achowicz easily defends the submission and again finds himself in on top of Krylov in side control. B?achowicz sinks in both hooks and locks in a head and arm choke. Krylov taps promptly.

UFC Moscow Results: Alexey Kunchenko Outlasts Thiago Alves

UFC Moscow results: Thiago Alves vs. Alexey Kunchenko

The premier mixed martial arts promotion touched down in mother Russia for the first time in company history today (Sat., Sept. 15, 2018). Kicking off the main card was veteran UFC fighter Thiago Alves, who took on UFC newcomer Alexey Kunchenko.

The 34-year-old Alves entered the night losing three out of his last four fights. He most recently lost to Curtis Millender earlier this year at UFC Fight Night 126. A win for Alves would be his first in a year and a half.

The undefeated Kunchenko enters the UFC after dominating his competition in M-1 Global. Boasting an 18-0 record, some prognosticators have anointed Kunchenko the next Russian star. He first had to get past a very game Alves.

 Round One

The fight begins with both guys being cautious. Alves eventually throws a leg kick and follows it up with some weak jabs. Nothing significant landed, however. Both fighters throwing a number of faints trying to get the other man to bite. Kunchenko occasionally throws a single leg kick but he is spending much of round one trying to figure out Alves. Neither man did much in the opening round but Alves did land a few more punches and thus should’ve done enough to win the round.

Round Two

Both fighters pick up the pace in round two. Alves comes up with a nice combo and Kunchenko follows with one of his own. Alves attempts a switch high kick that nearly lands. Kunchenko evades and lands a nice body kick to Alves. Kunchenko has had octagon control for most of round two and he has picked up his pace significantly. Alves lands a couple of hard leg kicks in the last 60 seconds of the round. Alves follows with a hard body kick. Close round, did Alves do enough to steal it?

Round Three

Alves has a knot on his left shin to start round three. However, Alves throws that left high kick to start the round. Kunchenko has done a great job at landing strikes while backpedaling all fight and continues in the final round. Again, Kunchenko owns the octagon this round and continues to lead the dance and be the aggressor. He is countering Alves’s leg kicks nicely in the final round. Kunchenko takes an incidental eye poke. The last two minutes were largely the Russian’s as he briefly knocked down Alves and took him down. Kunchenko should win this round and the fight.

Alexey Kunchenko defeats Thiago Alves via unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28)
