With the MMA world still reeling from the unfortunate news that Tony Ferguson had been forced out of his lightweight bout against Khabib Nurmagomedov in the feature spot of April 16’s UFC on FOX 19, the division’s card saver has already spoken up.

Top-ranked stalwart Donald Cerrone, who’s currently scheduled to take on Patrick Cote at welterweight on June 18’s UFC Fight Night debut from Ottawa, Canada, offered his services with his classic “I know a guy” line on Twitter:

“Cowboy” then retweeted a fans suggestion that it was time for Cerrone to save another card:

Finally, Cerrone reiterated that he “knows a guy” in response to Ariel Helwani’s tweet about the set of circumstances where Nurmagomedov was looking to return after nearly two years on the sidelines dealing with injuries:

The bout makes a ton of sense, as Nurmagomedov and Cerrone were originally supposed to fight at UFC 178 in 2014 and then again at UFC 187 in May of last year before the undefeated grappler withdrew with knee injuries both times. It is still thought that Nurmagomedov will remain off the card, but with his last fight a decision win over current champion Rafael dos Anjos in 2014, “The Eagle” needs cage time arguably more than any other fighter in the UFC.

Will Cerrone step up to save another event on short notice?

Well, well, well.

Oh how the tables have turned.

Injury ridden lightweight contender Khabib “The Eagle” Nurmagomedov has spent the last two years on the sidelines since scoring a victory over current divisional kingpin Rafael dos Anjos.

The undefeated Dagestani wrestler was scheduled to make his return later this month (April 16, 2016) against Tony “El Cucuy” Ferguson in the main event of UFC on FOX 19 from Tampa, Florida.

Ferguson has been riding a hot wave as of late, and had previously warned Nurmagomedov to stay healthy and show up on fight night.

Now, however, “El Cucuy” has been forced off of the card due to an injury per FOX Sports.

This news has forced the UFC to bump the originally scheduled co-main event between former title challenger Glover Teixeira and former champion “Suga” Rashad Evans to main event status.

With such little time to find a replacement for Ferguson, “The Eagle” will not compete on the card, but will instead be given a new bout for a later date.

Teixeira, a Brazilian slugger, has picked up back to back stoppage victories over the likes of Ovince St. Preux and Patrick Cummins after suffering consecutive defeats to Jon Jones and Phil Davis.

Evans, on the other hand, recently returned from quite a lengthy injury layoff, dropping an extremely disappointing decision to Ryan Bader at October 2015’s UFC 192. He will look to get back on track against Teixeira in just a few weeks time.

An injury to Tony Ferguson has scratched the planned UFC on FOX 19 main event. The card will now be headlined by Rashad Evans vs. Glover Teixeira, according to a report by FOXSports.com.

Ferguson was set to meet Khabib Nurmagomedov in a title-eliminator in the lightweight division. Evans-Teixeira will be five rounds in the light heavyweight division.

Evans (19-4-1) is a former UFC light heavyweight champion, but is just 2-3 over his last five. He was bested last October by Ryan Bader, snapping his two-fight win streak that included victories over Chael Sonnen and Dan Henderson.

Teixeira (24-4) was a replacement for Mauricio “Shogun” Rua in this bout, as the ex-UFC champion suffered an injury of his own. The former title contender is on a two-fight win streak, having bested Patrick Cummins and upcoming interim title fighter Ovince Saint Preux after back-to-back decision defeats at the hands of Phil Davis and Jon Jones.

It remains to be seen if officials will find a replacement for Ferguson or keep Nurmagomedov – who has battled injuries of his own over the past couple of years – off the card completely.

One possible replacement would be Donald Cerrone, as “Cowboy” does have a fight lined up, but is always willing to step in on short notice.

The Brazilian and former title contender agreed to replace Mauricio “Shogun” Rua and meet Rashad Evans next month at UFC on FOX 19 without even hearing who he would be facing.

Teixeira has scored back-to-back victories, finishing both Patrick Cummins and Ovince Saint Preux, to get himself right back near the front of the line in the 205-pound division.

The 36-year-old explained to Brazilian news source Portal do Vale Tudo that he always keeps himself on weight now in case of a call by the UFC.

“I keep myself on weight. Ever since my loss to Phil Davis, I changed my entire training camp and diet,” Teixeira said. “I’m always light, on weight and ready. Semi-ready, actually. Because nobody trains and is always ready without a fight coming up, no fighter does that. Anyone who does that is not in the UFC. We have to keep ourselves at 70-percent the whole year, anything more than that will get us hurt.

I was training, I was actually helping Caio Magalhaes who will fight on the same day. When they called me, I accepted right away. I didn’t even ask who my opponent was. Rashad is a former champion and very well rounded. You must be sharp to fight any of the top guys. I’m prepared to show I can take any of them and fight for a title again.”

Teixeira (24-4) rose through the rankings to challenge Jon Jones for the title in 2014. He lost via decision, and was also defeated by Phil Davis later that year.

Evans (19-4-1) is just 2-3 over his last five after going unbeaten from 2010-12.
