Dean Barry

Dublin striker, Dean Barry has been handed his official release from the UFC this Wednesday evening, despite featuring just last month in a UFC Vegas 52 preliminary card opener against Mike Jackson in his first fight under the banner of the organization.

Dean Barry, a native of Tallaght, and trainee of Team Ryano under head coach, Andy Ryan, had previously signed with the UFC last year ahead of a projected debut on ‘Fight Island’ against Jackson, before he was ultimately released from the organization.

Resigned to the UFC following a first round knockout win over Drew Lipton at Titan FC 73, Barry made his awaited Octagon debut back in April at UFC Vegas 52, suffering a first round disqualification loss against Jackson after an eye gouge left the latter unable to continue beyond the foul.

The pairing came as a rather topsy-turvy outing for both overall, with Barry penalized earlier for a pair of low groin strikes, courtesy of a spinning back kick, and then a round kick which landed low on Jackson.

Dean Barry has been handed his walking papers following last month’s debut DQ loss

However, prior to the eye gouge – which was deemed intentional, Barry had stunned Jackson at the fence with strikes, resulting in a disqualification loss as Barry fell to 4-2 off the back of his welterweight debut with the organization.

Per an initial report from MMA Fighting reporters, Damon Martin, and Guilherme Cruz this Wednesday evening, Barry has since been handed his release from the UFC following his organizational debut loss against Jackson.

“Dean Barry has been released from the UFC, per multiple sources confirmed to myself and @guicruzzz (Guilherme Cruz),” Damon Martin tweeted. “Barry suffered a DQ loss in his debut fight with Mike Jackson. Full story coming later to @MMAFighting.”

Following the loss, Barry, who has since deleted his Twitter account, gained flak from fans and critics of his performance, when he claimed that Jackson had taken the easy way out of the fight despite suffering an eye gouge

“To be honest with you, I thought he (Mike Jackson) took the easy way out there,” Dean Barry said in a video posted on his social media. “Didn’t want to stay, didn’t want to continue fighting. Even when I kicked him low, he was talking on the ground to me for ages. Like, if you get hit in the nuts, you can’t be talking like that. Same with the eye poke. Straight after the ref called the fight off, he was fine. Both eyes open perfectly. He said he can’t open his eyes.”

Cynthia Calvillo

It goes without saying, that Cynthia Calvillo is as tough as they come.

Heading into UFC Vegas 42, Calvillo was in pretty serious need of a win, having lost two of her last three. Unfortunately, she would receive her third loss in a row when her corner stopped the bout with Andrea Lee. The stoppage came between the second and third round and was due to the immense amount of damage she was taking and the serious swelling around her eye.

As it turns out, to the surprise of few, that swelling was so bad because Lee had broken the orbital bone of Calvillo. She revealed with a post to her Instagram that the orbital got broken at the end of the first round, but she fought through the entire second round, before the corner stoppage.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CWb69mhPT_j/

“Dark places bring out the best in me. I’ve had worse losses than this in life. Orbital broken in the 1st round and people count me out. I know what i’m capable of. I’m a fighter no matter what they say. Thank you to all who still believe in me, I feel it. To the rest, I see it ??Too many people selling you wolf tickets to the max fighting nobodies! “pay my bills” i’ll beat their ass. The real ones know the truth. Talk your shit!!!” Calvillo wrote.

Given the information, fans should hold their tongues if trying to say that Cynthia Calvillo is a quitter because she did not make it out for the third round. Aside from the fact that it was a decision made by her corner, she already fought through a broken orbital for one round and there was no reason to keep taking punishment.

Hopefully, it will not take long for Calvillo to heal up so she can get back to action. With three losses in a row, hopefully she will be able to get back on the right path.

Max Holloway, Yair Rodriguez Reflect On Epic UFC Vegas 42 Bout

UFC featherweight contenders Max Holloway and Yair Rodriguez have spoken out on social media just days after their battle at UFC Vegas 42.

Holloway earned the unanimous decision win over Rodriguez but was a back-and-forth war throughout. Rodriguez landed arguably the most damage that Holloway has suffered in a long time and landed dangerous shots late in the fight as well.

Both fighters exchanged words and mutual respect after their bout and shared a moment in an ambulance just minutes after their battle. Now, just days after their five-round war, Holloway posted on his Instagram to reflect on his biggest takeaways from the bout.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CWT1jQtBNiC/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

“Toughest sport in the world,” Holloway said. “But for some of us what happens in the Octagon is the easier parts of life. Yair is one of those fighters. If you want to understand how Yair does his ninja stuff, look at his team. If you want to understand why look at his family and the sacrifices they’ve made together to make it to the Octagon. Shout outs to Parral, Chihuahua. Love you, brother. Looking forward to your championship reign someday. We should be amigos, probably.”

After getting word of Holloway’s post, Rodriguez responded on his account.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CWT-LPIBgh9/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

“You are right about what you said. For some of us what happens in the octagon is the easiest part of life!” Rodriguez said. “You are truly an inspiration for me and I look forward to achieving something close to what you have done. I’ll keep on working and getting better and of course that we are amigos!”

Max Holloway Could Get A Third Fight With Alexander Volkanovski

Both featherweight contenders have plenty of options after their main event. Holloway is more than likely the next title challenger to featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski and will seek revenge after losing back-to-back controversial decisions.

Holloway was arguably one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world before he lost his belt to Volkanovski at UFC 245. He also challenged Dustin Poirier for the interim lightweight title at UFC 236, losing via decision.

Rodriguez returned to the Octagon after two years away from the sport, after suffering multiple injuries and dealing with fight cancelations. Entering the Holloway fight, he earned dominant wins over the likes of Jeremy Stephens, BJ Penn, and Dan Hooker.

What do you think is next for both Max Holloway and Yair Rodriguez?

Sonnen & McGregor Exchange Words, “The Bad Guy” Issues Warning

Conor McGregor Chael Sonnen

Chael Sonnen pulled out all the stops recently while talking about Conor McGregor, and the Irishman has fired back.

Sonnen has traded barbs with McGregor a handful of times over the years. While “The American Gangster” typically spends his time as a troll throwing shade at Jon Jones, he has never hesitated to poke some fun at the former champ-champ as well.

The most recent edition of this came after Sonnen saw McGregor pacing back and forth in front of his tv, watching Max Holloway’s introduction prior to his UFC Vegas 42 main event over Yair Rodriguez. After seeing this, the former middleweight and light heavyweight title challenger ripped McGregor, saying that he was too involved in his own schtick, and was becoming a weirdo, posting the clip from his show to his Twitter.

“Conor is on the verge of being a little rich weirdo. It’s the last thing I wanted for him, but if you mark out to your own gimmick to this extent, he’s posting things and then he’s deleting them. I mean, I’ve got to give the troll effort 100%, as a former troll myself, I get it. If there’s a UFC, you didn’t step a foot at it, you didn’t throw a single punch, and you can steal a headline on ESPN+, you’re doing something well, but in all fairness, Conor isn’t going to step in there with Max, any more than he was going to step in with the guy last week, the week before that, or whoever he pulls out of his hat next week,” Sonnen said.

“He’s got to heal himself. There’s talks of Dustin Poirier, but he smashed him twice. In all fairness, Conor is still a big draw, but he’s really working against himself. He is being a weirdo. Is this what he wants with his identity? A guy that walks around with his shirt off, screaming at a television set? I mean, come on. In all fairness, when you were 22 years old, that was one thing. But as a husband and a father, you’re a little bit of a dork.”

“The Notorious” Responds To “The Bad Guy”

Of course, this outburst from Chael Sonnen did not take long to make its way back around to Conor McGregor himself. He replied to the video, mocking Sonnen for not having as much money as he does yet being weird in his own right.

“??? says the little broke weirdo hahahahhahaha,” McGregor quipped.

Sonnen Issues Warning As Matters Escalate

After McGregor’s response, “The Bad Guy” provided the following warning to his fellow notorious trash talker.

“It’s not too late to stay off my radar Just put down the shot-glass of awful bottom-shelf whiskey, turn off your phone, and back outta the big-boy saloon niiiice n’ sloooow…”

“Oh; And leave a nice heartfelt apology on the table as you exit”

McGregor would then let it be known that he had no intentions of heeding Sonnen’s warning.

“Just set up the tripod, in the corner of your boxroom, and tell your 2 views the promo code for the window sheen.”

This is just the latest of exchanges between Conor McGregor and Chael Sonnen. As two of the best trash talkers in the history of the sport, any time they go back and forth, it is always exciting and unpredictable.

MMA News will keep you updated if this showdown between “The Bad Guy” and “The Notorious” escalates further.

White Unsure Of Amanda Nunes’s Future At 145lb, May End The Division

Dana White is not sure about the future of the women’s featherweight division.

While the division has had a total of three champions, women’s 14lb has never had an official rankings list on the UFC’s website. For the most part, champ-champ Amanda Nunes has bounced between the divisions, largely facing featherweight champions from other organizations in her defenses of that title.

Currently, Nunes is set to defend her bantamweight title against Julianna Peña, at UFC 269, and Dana White seems unsure that she will ever return to 145lb. When asked about the featherweight division at the UFC Vegas 42 post-fight presser, the UFC President seemingly said that the decision on whether the UFC gets rid of the division lies in the hands of Nunes, and what she chooses to do after her December 11th fight.

“Yeah, I don’t know. It’s gonna depend on what the champ (Nunes) wants to do. It’s gonna depend. We’ve got this fight coming up with her, and we’ll see how that fight plays out, and then we’ll figure out what we’ll do with that division… Yeah, I don’t know,” White said.

What makes this information interesting to hear at this current point in time, is that PFL lightweight champion and Olympic gold medalist Kayla Harrison is currently a free agent. This has led to numerous back and forth between her and the UFC, with White regularly dismissing Harrison, saying she should stay with the PFL, where she can win millions without fighting top fighters.

If Amanda Nunes decides that she does not want to continue fighting at featherweight, and Dana White and the UFC drop the division, it will almost certainly end all talks of her and Kayla Harrison fighting each other. It will be interesting to see how this all plays out, and what the champ-champ has to say about the situation.
