In the final Prelim fight for UFC on FX 1, veterans Jorge Rivera and Eric Schafer met in a middleweight battle.

At age 39, Rivera was able to pull off a second-round TKO in what will be his final MMA fight.

What We’ll Remember about This Fight

In what will go down as Rivera’s last fight, he was able to do what he’s done so much throughout his life, fight back through adversity.

Schafer was able to dominate the first round of this fight by scoring many takedowns.

Rivera fought his way back into the fight, though, showing just how much heart he has.

Rivera was able to stuff a takedown in the second and landed some hard shots that were left unanswered by Schafer.

What We Learned about Jorge Rivera

We learned that Rivera has heart and continues to come back from adversity.

Rivera was able to adjust and come back in this fight much like he has so much throughout his life.

He may not have been one of the UFC’s top fighters, but Rivera left us with some memorable moments, including the war of words leading up to his grudge match with Michael Bisping

What We Learned about Eric Schafer

Eric Schafer showed great wrestling in the first round of the fight.

But once he got hit by Rivera, he could not answer back.

Schafer has OK wrestling and grappling, but he is not that well-rounded.

What’s Next for Rivera?

Rivera can now ride into the sunset on a high note, something that many fighters don’t get to do.

Rivera can now focus on family and training others.

What’s Next for Schafer?

Schafer has now lost his second straight fight and is 1-4 in his last five.

If the UFC decides to keep Schafer, a matchup with “Filthy” Tom Lawler or Dan Miller could be next with the loser being cut.

UFC on FX: Ludwig vs. Neer Will Be an Entertaining Mess

The co-main event of tonight’s UFC on FX extravaganza is a Welterweight showdown between a dude who goes by “Bang” and a dude who goes by “The Dentist.”

When they’re not in the Octagon, they go by Duane Ludwig and Josh Neer, and both of them are presumably much less violent.

Both of these fighters are well known among the MMA-loving community, yet those tuning in to see UFC’s debut on FX may not be aware that both of them have been around for quite a while. Ludwig has been fighting professionally for over a decade, and Neer has been at it for nearly a decade. Oddly enough, Neer has considerably more fights under his belt than Ludwig.

Common sense suggests that his time in the Octagon will have made Neer a polished fighter, but this is true only to a degree. Neer’s boxing is above average, but he’s just OK at everything else. He’s gotten by mainly on toughness and an undying determination to give people hell, and we can expect to see more of the same from Neer on Friday night.

Between the two of them, Ludwig is the more dangerous fighter because he’s a more polished striker. If he is able to spend the majority of this fight on his feet, he’s going to have an edge.

Neer knows this, of course. And because we know he knows that, we know that he’s not about to let Ludwig have this one without making it difficult for him. He’ll hit Ludwig back when he has to, but you can also look for Neer to take Ludwig out of his comfort zone by using assorted grappling techniques.

If this is the shape this fight is going to take on, it won’t really be a fight. It will be more like a battle, or an endurance contest.

And that’s not a bad thing. It will mean that this fight will have to go the distance, and things will get more and more hectic if Neer is successful in frustrating Ludwig. Neer will likely have to put up with more than a couple hard shots, but his deranged sense of toughness will keep his heart beating, his legs moving and his fists flying.

Ludwig will have to do his best to tolerate Neer’s hectic and random approach to this fight, and it is absolutely imperative that he keep his guard up, as he doesn’t want to leave himself open to any kind of significant damage that could swing the momentum of the fight.

But as long as Ludwig can fight the majority of this fight on his feet and on his terms, he’s going to be fine. He’s going to have to work for it, and it won’t be fun, but this is a fight he should win.

Prediction: Ludwig by split decision

Chael Sonnen Says Anderson Silva Is Done Fighting, Turned Down Rematch 4 Times

The UFC’s favorite bad boy, Chael Sonnen, will be fighting in a middleweight title eliminator against Michael Bisping at the co-main event of UFC on FOX 2 next week.

While this bout is supposed to declare the number one contender at 185 pounds, Sonnen said don’t expect the winner to face off against reigning middleweight champion Anderson Silva.

“I can guarantee you – Anderson Silva and I will never cross paths again,” Sonnen told MMA Junkie today.

“The Spider” has been out of action due to bursitis and back problems since easily defeating Sonnen’s friend and occasional training partner Yushin Okami at UFC 134, which took place in August.

Uncle Chael has taken this inactivity from the octagon as a form of unofficial retirement by his most hated adversary.

“I know Anderson’s not going to fight. The folks at the UFC know he’s not going to fight,” Sonnen proclaimed.”

“I’m all for promoting and marketing and all that good stuff. I don’t want to throw water on a perfectly hot flame, but Anderson Silva’s not going to fight anybody.”

Interestingly, Sonnen claimed that the UFC planned to do an interim middleweight title bout between the respective winners of Michael Bisping vs. Demian Maia and Sonnen vs. Mark Munoz at UFC on FOX 2, prior to Munoz getting injured last minute.

Speaking of injures, Sonnen went on to say he is not questioning whether or not Silva is really hurt…before he goes on to question if the champion is really hurt.

“If a guy says he’s hurt, you’ve got to believe him. Only he knows, and I don’t need an X-ray or anything else,” Sonnen explained.

“I think it’s a little fugazi that he claims that he’s hurt, and then we see footage of him live sparring with Wanderlei Silva,” he continued.

“I think it’s a little fugazi that he claims he’s hurt, and I’ve got my friend (Muhammed) ‘Mo’ Lawal training with Machida alongside Silva. I think these things are peculiar. But if a guy says he’s hurt, it’s enough for me.”

The former two-time All-American wrestler at the University of Oregon, who has never been shy to question Silva’s character in the past, boldly declared that the current middleweight kingpin has turned down a potential Sonnen-Silva rematch on multiple occasions.

“I can tell you that behind the scenes, they (the UFC) tried to put me and Anderson together four times, and four times he said no,” Sonnen claimed. “I called him out publicly. You call out a Brazilian publicly, you’re going to be fighting that Brazilian.”

Sonnen is referencing when he called out Silva following a submission win over Brian Stann at UFC 136, saying “Anderson Silva, you absolutely suck!” before offering the champion a loser-leaves-town bout for the Super Bowl weekend card.

“The Gangster from Oregon” feels that Silva has fought his last fight based on Silva’s reaction that evening.

“That’s in their culture, and he sat there and covered his mouth and hid behind Charles Barkley, which is a smart move. It saved him a trip to the hospital. But Anderson Silva is not going to fight me. I don’t believe he’s going to fight Bisping. I don’t believe he’s going to fight again. That’s my personal opinion.”

Chael wanted to twist the knife a little deeper before calling it an interview.

“He even said no to (UFC executive) Lorenzo Fertitta’s face. Face-to-face, not over the phone – Lorenzo brought him out, sat him down, and said, ‘This is the fight we want.’ And Anderson said no.”

Sonnen and Silva infamously fought at UFC 117, with Silva being down on all three judges’ scorecards heading into the fifth and final round, before he made the challenger tap out to a triangle choke.
