Michael Bisping experienced a little bit of karma in his bout with Jason “Mayhem” Miller.

Bisping, in his last bout, kneed Jorge Rivera in the head while Rivera was clearly down and showed no remorse for his actions afterward. It was clear that Bisping did it intentionally as he took the time to wind up and pick his shot.

Against Miller, Bisping received an incidental headbutt along with an accidental eye poke as well.

After the two fouls occurred, Bisping made a clear indication to the referee as to what had happened. His yell about the headbutt was loud enough to be heard on a regular audio feed from one of the cageside cameras.

Maybe Bisping didn’t learn the same set of rules from the playground “across the pond,” but maybe someone should educate him.

For anyone who’s ever played basketball at your local YMCA or neighborhood courts, everyone knows just because you can call your own fouls, doesn’t mean you do.

Bisping seemed to even forget the rules himself as “Mayhem” jokingly asked for Bisping to attempt to knee him in the head while on the ground and Bisping took a head kick at the downed opponent instead.

If Bisping is going to clearly ignore the rules, then don’t be the loudest person in a fight to complain about something that is completely accidental.

He doesn’t have that many fans to begin with and his current attitude of only acknowledging the rules when it benefits him are likely to keep fans from backing him.

Chael Sonnen Only Has His Wrestling Going vs. Muñoz, or Maybe Not

Chael Sonnen‘s dream rematch against UFC Champion Anderson Silva has met a recently-announced pre-condition at UFC on Fox 2 that will be held next year: a fight versus Mark Muñoz that will decide who is the real numero uno middleweight contender.

A match whose outcome will bring the victor closest to possibly snatching the UFC belt from MMA‘s pound-for-pound kingsomething that Sonnen almost pulled off in UFC 117.

Sonnen, based on comments from various MMA online forums, appears to be the favorite over Muñoz. This is mainly because, statistically, The Unnatural has proven to be the better wrestler and the more effective takedown artist inside the Octagon compared to The Filipino Wrecking Machine.

His relentless style and boundless energy—natural or otherwise—are also impressive. Factor in his “near-win” against Silva and subsequent trouncing of Brian Stann, and it becomes clearer why most will place their bets on Sonnen.

Still, eveybody knows that, just like Sonnen, Muñoz is first and foremost a first-class wrestler. Sonnen’s advantage in takedown percentage notwithstanding, it remains to be seen who of the former top amateur collegiate and Olympic-style wrestlers is the better wrestler in MMA.

Some may say that Chris Leben successfully took down Muñoz, proof that the latter is inferior to Sonnen in the rassling department. But let’s not forget that Demian Maia also did the same to Sonnen, before immediately sinking the game-winning triangle choke afterward. (Well, this is MMA. And as a side note, who is the better wrestler between Leben and Maia?)

Sonnen may carry more submission-hold wins in his fight record—the most recent being his arm triangle choke win over Stann—but Muñoz survived and beat world submission-grappling champion Maia, who in turn submitted Sonnen.

In short, Sonnen’s grappling is not a discernible threat against Muñoz.

When it comes to stand-up striking, they appear to be equally skilled, but Muñoz without a doubt unloads the heavier hands. And it’s a no-brainer who has the more lethal ground-and-pound game.

Sonnen’s chances of getting that dream rematch lies in being able to deliver to Muñoz what he dished out against The Spider: effective takedowns, ground control and non-stop ground-and-pound…until the final bell rings.

It’s unlikely that Muñoz will eventually slap a triangle armbar from his back, but it’s also unlikely that the Filipino-American will be knocked unconscious by Sonnen’s punches (if we can call them that). So for Sonnen, it must be ground-and-paw en route to a decision win in their fight expected to happen on January 28, 2012.

Otherwise, if Muñoz keeps the fight on their feet, or worse, takes down Sonnen as often as he needs to rain down his devastating power bombs, then the dream rematch will have to wait a little longer—if not for eternity.

Or he might end up calling for a rematch versus Muñoz to be crowned, finally, as “the new UFC Middleweight Champion!”

TUF 14 Finale: Michael Bisping Proves He is a Title Contender at 185 Pounds

Michael Bisping earned his fourth consecutive victory after defeating Jason “Mayhem” Miller this past weekend at The Ultimate Fighter 14 Finale.

After being dominated throughout the first round, Bisping utilized his technical boxing skills to pick apart his opponent and defeat Miller via TKO in the third round.

The win improved the Englishman’s UFC record to 12-3 while the loss gave Miller his first defeat since 2009.

Bisping’s status as one of the best middleweights in mixed martial arts was officially noticed as “The Count” emerged virtually unscathed or beaten in his one-sided victory over Miller. Bisping picked apart Miller as he wisely utilized his technical boxing skills to batter and bully his opponent into forcing referee Steve Mazzagatti to call a stoppage to the bout.

It showed a lot of heart on Bisping’s part as well as some much needed credibility to his image, considering his antics on this past season and his incident against Jorge Rivera didn’t win him over with any fans.

It is unclear who Bisping’s future opponent will be, but it will likely be against one of the top 10 competitors at 185 pounds.

Should Bisping earn a win over a more credible and competitive opponent, he could see himself next in line for a title shot in the near future. Bisping’s recent competition hasn’t necessarily been something to award him an opportunity at facing the UFC middleweight champion, Anderson Silva, but a fifth consecutive victory might be able to raise the British slugger’s image as a potential threat.

Although most fans might actually debate upon whether or not Bisping poses any real challenge to the Brazilian’s title reign, fans and critics must give Bisping the respect and recognition as a top contender in the middleweight division.

UFC 140 Predictions

Main Card Predictions Light Heavyweight Championship bout: Jon Jones (c) vs Lyoto Machida Love both these guys. The patience of Machida will probably give Jon Jones a little bit of trouble for the first round. However, I don’t think there is much that Machida can do against the elusive Jones. Main Card Predictions

Light Heavyweight Championship bout: Jon Jones (c) vs Lyoto Machida

Love both these guys. The patience of Machida will probably give Jon Jones a little bit of trouble for the first round. However, I don’t think there is much that Machida can do against the elusive Jones. The best chance Machida has at winning this fight is being Jon Jones Guard and landing long punches. I hope the odds are too far apart on this one. I like Jon Jones winning this one pretty much no matter what. If the odds are like -600 though, I might take Machida.

Heavyweight bout: Frank Mir vs Antônio Rodrigo Nogueira

A rematch that Mir won the first time. I think this back to being a toss up again as Nogueira was sick with the flu last time they fought. If the odds are ridiculously skewed in favor of Mir, I like Nogueira to win. Otherwise if its close go with Mir.

Light Heavyweight bout: Tito Ortiz vs Antônio Rogério Nogueira

Tito ain’t KOing Nogueira on the feet so imo that will give Nogueira time to work his championship level boxing. Ortiz’ best shot at winning this is obviously one way. The double leg > GnP. However, he is going against a Nogueira. So in that position you have to worry about being armbarred. The two brothers have some of the best armbars in the game. Nogueira’s boxing is much much better than Tito’s. I like Nogueira winning this, but I’ve been finding myself rooting for Tito in his last few fights. Maybe its the nostalgic fan in me. I used to dislike Tito all those years he fought before his stint on the TUF show, before he came back for the first Ken Shamrock fight, but these days I’m a fan. I think Nogueira has the right skillset to give Ortiz problems. I see little Nog taking a decision. Cardio could be Ortiz ace in the hole in this one though.

Welterweight bout: Claude Patrick vs Brian Ebersole

Ebersole. There are only a few people in the division that can beat him right now.

Featherweight bout: Mark Hominick vs Chan Sung Jung

Awesome fight potential, but I lean towards Hominick here. Sung Jung is wild and Hominick is crisp and tight. Big advantage for Hominick.

Preliminary card (Ion Television)

Light Heavyweight bout: Krzysztof Soszynski vs Igor Pokrajac

Soszynski will likely win being bigger and better on the ground. I like the way Igor fights though.

Middleweight bout: Jared Hamman vs Constantinos Philippou

Hamman is the guy that presses and he doesn’t look like hes tough or a fighter, but hes got skills. I expect him to win then sell you a computer when its over.

Lightweight bout: John Makdessi vs Dennis Hallman

One thing you can count on here is that Hallman won’t be wearing a mankini. Only prediction to be made here.

Bantamweight bout: Yves Jabouin vs Walel Watson

Preliminary card

Lightweight bout: Mark Bocek vs Nik Lentz

I want to see this fight. Bocek has been a monster lately, but Nik Lentz is always fun to watch and has some good skills. On the ground though Bocek has distinct advantage.

Welterweight bout: Rich Attonito vs Jake Hecht

Lightweight bout: Mitch Clarke vs John Cholish

After completely dominating Jason “Mayhem” Miller in the second and third rounds of The Ultimate Fighter 14 Finale main event, it’s time for Michael Bisping to get his shot at Anderson Silva.

Realistically, Bisping probably just now entered the top five of the division with his win tonight and is sitting behind Chael Sonnen, Mark Munoz and Yushin Okami in the middleweight rankings, but due to the lack of competition at 185 lbs., Bisping could get a shot sooner than one might think.

Out of the four fighters above, it can be argued that Bisping has the strongest case of all of them to get a shot at Silva.

Okami is one of the best middleweights in the world, but he was just beaten badly by Silva in his last fight and needs to win quite a few fights to get another shot.

Munoz is on a four-fight win streak similar to Bisping’s, with wins over Aaron Simpson, C.B. Dollaway, Demian Maia and Chris Leben, but the UFC may be hesitant to throw Munoz in there with Silva since he is unknown by most casual fans.

Sonnen is clearly the fighter that the UFC would love to book in Silva’s next title fight, but let’s be honest, he has won only one fight since being finished by Silva at UFC 117.

The way the division sits now, it seems that the winner of Sonnen and Munoz’s fight on FOX in late January will receive the next title shot.

Even if Bisping has to take another fight before he gets a shot at Silva, it is clear that he deserves a title fight more than the rest of the top contenders.

“The Count” has beaten Dan Miller, Yoshihiro Akiyama, Jorge Rivera and Mayhem in his last four fights and has won five of his last six, with the lone loss coming via a close decision to Wanderlei Silva at UFC 110, a fight Bisping still believes he won.

If by some miracle Anderson Silva recovers in time to fight before the winner of Sonnen and Munoz is ready to get their shot, it should be Bisping that gets a crack at solving the puzzle that is “The Spider.”

While Bisping will be a huge underdog in the fight, and rightfully so, he has earned a shot to shock the world and the UFC should oblige him.
