Vicente Luque hopes to fight Kamaru Usman for the welterweight title.

Luque is coming off an impressive first-round submission win over Tyron Woodley at UFC 260 late last month. It put him on a three-fight winning streak while he has also won nine of his last 10 outings.

A couple more wins and Luque will certainly be in for a shot at the welterweight crown. And Luque likes his chances against many of the top five.

“The top of the division, most of these guys are grapplers,” Luque told MMA Junkie. “A lot of them have good striking, as well, but they’re more grappling oriented. (They’re) trying to tire out their opponents and eventually strike in the later rounds. And having a guy like Woodley try to do that against me – try to tire me out – and I was trying to reverse that and just impose my will and then bring the fight to where I wanted it to play out in the striking, that shows the division that I’m ready to fight these guys and show myself as well, that my wrestling has been evolving a lot in the last years. I’ve been working on it – I just hadn’t faced a wrestler. So it was great to face Woodley right now.

“Eventually I want to face other guys like that. I think Leon Edwards would be a great test. Colby Covington would be another great guy I would like to fight, because if you look at the champion right now, he is an amazing wrestler. He’s been developing his striking, but he’s an amazing wrestler. So if I want to be ready to beat a guy like that, I’ve got to be ready to face tough competition like Colby, like Leon Edwards. They’re going to try to do the same thing against me.”

Luque knows better than most what it’s like to face Usman. After all, they were former teammates at Sanford MMA and still remain friends to this day.

That is also why Luque is hoping Usman remains champion by the time he ends up in a position to challenge for the title.

“I definitely want him to keep that title until I get there unless it’s against Gilbert Burns, because Gilbert Burns is my good friend and we’re always helping each other every single fight,” Luque said. “If he gets that opportunity again, I will be helping him out and I will be hoping for him to be the new champ. In any other case, I would love for Kamaru to still be the champion. We have a great friendship, as well, and we trained many years together. I know how hard he works, I know how much he has been putting into his career. I know what kind of fighter he is and he can really be one of the greatest welterweights ever.

“I would love to eventually get to fight him and have him be the champion and dethrone him. It would be something amazing and I know it would be one of my toughest fights ever. I know Kamaru is a beast. I would love to have him as the champion and have a fight against him.”

How do you like Luque’s chances against Usman?

Vicente Luque has just submitted his most high-profile victory inside the Octagon, however, it wasn’t completely plane sailing for the #10 ranked finisher. Scoring his twelfth stoppage win in the promotion’s welterweight division, Luque managed to wrap up an opening round D’Arce choke win over former champion, Woodley — after an earlier fire fight between the two.

Immediately, in quite surprising fashion given recent performances, Woodley closed the distance and locked up with Luque at the fence. Winging with massive bombs, Woodley cracked Luque right behind the ear, drawing a brief wobble from the finisher, before suffering his own moment of worry when the latter counter with a massive overhand.

Worrying backing up to the Octagon fence in massive trouble, Woodley ate more strikes before evading, however, the far side of the Octagon didn’t offer ample time to recover, as Luque pour more pressure on.

Rocking the Missouri native again, Luque sunk in a D’Arce choke on the former welterweight kingpin, eventually forcing the tap.

Below, check out the highlights from Luque submission win over former titleholder, Woodley.

LowKick MMA will be bringing you UFC 260: Miocic vs. Ngannou II results throughout the afternoon (Sat. 27th. March 2021) from the UFC Apex facility in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Taking main event honours in the promotion’s return to a pay-per-view schedule, a massive heavyweight championship rematch between the consensus greatest heavyweight of all time, as Stipe Miocic looks to defend his championship against 2018 foe, the devasatating puncher, Francis Ngannou.

Hoping to improve to 2-0 over the Cameroonian challenger, Miocic took home a dominant unanimous decision victory over Ngannou at UFC 220 back in January of 2018, handing Ngannou his first promotional defeat.

In the time since, Miocic featured in a trilogy against two-weight champion, Daniel Cormier, with the former taking bragging-rights last August at UFC 252, taking a unanimous judging win over Cormier, ending the tie with a 2-1 record.

Following a consecutive defeat to Derrick Lewis in arguably the most forgettable matchup the division has ever seen, the Xtreme Couture trainee has returned to the top of the heavyweight pile, with a quartet of opening minute knockout victories over Curtis Bladyes, Cain Velasquez, Junior dos Santos, and last May — stopped Jairzinho Rozenstruik in just twenty-seconds.

Featuring in a promoted co-main event, former welterweight champion, Tyron Woodley returns, attempting to snap a three-fight slide as he matches against the gritty #10 ranked, Vicente Luque.

Dropping a trio of defeats to Kamaru Usman, Gilbert Burns, and Colby Covington, Woodley’s most recent victory came back in September of 2018, stopping Darren Till with a second round D’Arce to score his third and final welterweight title defence.

For New Jersey born finisher, Luque, he’s rebounded from a one-sided unanimous decision loss to Stephen Thompson back in November of 2019, to lodge two massive knockout wins over both Niko Price, and Randy Brown in May and August of last year, respectively.

Stephen Thompson is edging towards Vicente Luque over Tyron Woodley.

Woodley takes on Luque in the co-main event of the UFC 260 pay-per-view event taking place Saturday night at the Apex facility in Las Vegas.

For Woodley, it’s a chance to end a three-fight losing skid against one of the most exciting welterweights in the world. For Luque, it’s a chance to get the biggest win of his career and further climb up the 170-pound ranks.

Thompson has notably faced both fighters so it’s all the more interesting to see how he thinks the fight will pan out. With that said, he expects Luque to come out on top and explained why in a recent video.

“I like Tyron [Woodley], I like Vicente Luque. [I’ve] faced both of these guys.” Thompson said (via Middle Easy). “I fought Tyron in a different mindset in his heyday. I was his first title defense. I don’t feel like his mindset isn’t there like it used to be. He doesn’t have that fire anymore.

“So, I’m kind of leaning towards Vicente Luque. He’s very tough, he’s very young, he’s got that fire. He wants to go out there and win the title. He’s been wrecking dudes. I was his last loss and has had two fights since and dominated his opponents. So, I’m really excited to see that fight.”

It’s easy to forget Woodley was the welterweight champion just over two years ago. However, he has since dropped three in a row and has lost his last 14 rounds of action.

Not many are pinning their hopes on a win for Woodley this weekend either. All Thompson can do is hope he comes out with a different mindset.

“I hope Tyron comes out with a different mindset and ready to rock and roll,” Thompson added. “That would just make out to be a great fight. But I’m kind of leaning towards Vicente Luque on that one.”

Do you agree?
