A pair of UFC fight bookings were reported today by MMAJunkie. Heavyweight Octagon newcomers Jon Olaf Einemo and Dave Herman will meet at UFC 131 next month in Vancouver, BC and Vladimir Matyushenko and  Alexander Gustafsson will square off at UFC 133 in August in Philidelphia, PA.

Einemo (6-1), who is coming off of a five-year hiatus from MMA, was originally slated to take on Shane Carwin on the june card before “The Engineer” was promoted to a number one contendership bout opposite Junior dos Santos as a result of Brock Lesnar pulling out of the scheduled bout because of a diverticulitis flare-up. His only loss came by decision at the hands of Strikeforce contender Fabricio Werdum at PRIDE 31.

8-2 in his last ten outings including a DQ loss to Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou in 2010, Herman (20-2) was supposed to face Joey Beltran on the card before it was reshuffled. A veteran of Bellator, Sengoku, EliteXC, “PeeWee” has stoppages in 19 of his 20 wins.

Matyushenko vs. Gustafsson will see “The Janitor” try to avenge his teammate Jared Hamman’s UFC 105 loss to “The Mauler.” Both fighters will take two-fight win streaks with them into the bout. Matyushenko (26-5) defeated Jason Brilz by devastating KO at UFC 129 last month and Alexandre Ferreira by TKO at UFC  122 in November. Gustafsson (11-1) beat Cyrille Diabate at UFC 120 in October and James Te-Huna at UFC 127 in February. Both wins came by rear naked choke.

At UFC 129, I heard Mike Goldberg say the strangest thing: he called Vladimir Matyushenko a “legend.” Now, I understand that Mike has been prone to say many dubious things, like the time he described Travis Lutter’s Jiu-Jitsu as “Michael Jordan-esque.” I also understand that the man is simply trying to hype up fights. But calling Matyushenko a legend? Hold your horses, buddy.

Listen, I have absolutely no problem with Vladimir Matyushenko. The man has a great record (26-5) and has been through some tough fights in his long career. He has had several good battles against the likes of Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, Tito Ortiz, and Andrei Arlovski, among others. And to continue being competitive at his age? Remarkable.

Still, those achievements are not enough to earn the title of “legend.” His most notable accomplishments are winning the IFL Light Heavyweight championship from someone you’ve never heard of and defending said championship against someone you’ve never heard of.

Let me get to my point: Matyushenko is not a legend, he is a veteran. He’s a veteran the same way Yuki Kondo is a veteran, or Matt Serra (GSP upset withstanding), or even the beloved Fedor’s younger sibling.

To become a legend, you would need to have done something incredible for the sport. Royce Gracie very arguably sowed the roots of MMA to become what it is today. The Shamrock brothers are not just pioneers, they also brought the sport much needed exposure and were incredibly successful during their prime years.

Kazushi Sakuraba was one of the most exciting fighters to watch in Pride, and his victories over notable opposition made him a national hero in Japan. Chuck and Wanderlei held on to their UFC and Pride belts, respectively, for so long we thought they’d never lose them. Today, Anderson Silva’s legacy is secure as we wait for his next move.

Vernon White was a great fighter in his day. Carlos Newton won the UFC welterweight championship once. Renzo Gracie has had some really exciting fights over the years. These men are not legendary. They have been in the sport a long time, have had good success, and, well, that’s it.

To be sure, I don’t believe any of the veterans I have described would call themselves legendary. Aside from Frank Shamrock, most legends are humble and wouldn’t describe themselves as such either. Still, a distinction has to be made between the two. 50 years from now, what will MMA fans be remembering the most: BJ Penn winning belts in two divisions, or Luiz Azeredo’s three fight win streak in the early 2000s? Let’s not give the future something to laugh about when they recall the past and its tendency to bestow titles on the undeserving.

UFC 129 Recap: Vladimir Matyushenko Wants to Rematch Tito Ortiz or Lil Nog

Success is not measured by the longevity of a career, but how much productivity one’s career is able to amount. And Vladimir “The Janitor” Matyushenko certainly adds some truth to that statement.

Following his knockout victory over Jason Brillz at UFC 129, the Belarusian told Ron Kruck of Inside MMA that he feels accomplished to still be competing in mixed martial arts at 40 years old.

“Well it’s a big, big acheivement. For me, myself and for all the industry, for MMA, UFC and for all the fans, I am just glad it happened.”

Holding a professional record of 26-5-0, the UFC veteran has seen it all in MMA, competing in multiple organizations including, UFC, IFL, IFC and Affliction Entertainment.

And despite all the experience that he holds, Matyushenko admits that times have changed.

“It was pretty much fighting in a backyard or the parking lot, and now it ended up being this big in such a short period of time, even I’m surprised,” Matyushenko said.

After collecting a victory over Brillz, Matyushenko has now won five of his last six bouts inside the Octagon, and while he isn’t too savvy on hand picking opponents, there are two competitors who come to mind regarding his next bout.

“I have lost in the UFC to Tito Ortiz, and I have lost to ‘Lil Nog’ (Rogerio Nogueira) and I’d like to take those losses back.”

While the idea of witnessing a rematch between either legend is worth the price of admission, currently both Ortiz and Nogueira are scheduled to square off against Ryan Bader and Rich Franklin at UFC 132 and UFC 133 respectively.

In the meantime, Matyushenko will look to enjoy some time off after his most recent win while he waits for his next challenger to emerge.

UFC 129 Results: Vladimir "The Janitor" Matyushenko Destroys Jason Brilz

UFC 129 from the Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada was a fight card packed with amazing matchups.

Some of the night’s highlights included a flying triangle choke by Pablo Garza, a beautifully executed spinning back fist by John Makdessi, Rory MacDonald elevated his MMA record to 11-1 with a decisive victory over Octagon veteran and Season 5 of the Ultimate Fighter winner, Nate Diaz.

Additionally, Jose Aldo and Mark Hominick displayed brilliance in their fighting styles as they clashed for the UFC featherweight title.  Randy Couture’s retirement matchup ended in a defeat at the foot of Lyoto Machida and Georges St-Pierre endured a rather non-eventful title fight against Jake Shields.

Amongst all these amazing fights, one devastating knockout did not receive much publicity and the fight was over before you could grab a snack.

The 40 year old Vladimir “The Janitor” Matyushenko relied on his 14 years of experience as a professional ultimate fighter to defeat the 35-year-old Jason Brilz by knockout in a mere 20 seconds into round one.

Aggressive from the onset, Matyushenko delivered a flurry of punches at Brilz landing one jaw-rattling strike after another en route to his 26th professional victory.

This former collegiate wrestler has competed worldwide in numerous venues including the International Fight League and Affliction.

Making his second stint in the UFC, Vladimir’s first run at championship gold was met in defeat by the hands of Tito Ortiz at UFC 33 in 2001.

Primed to make another championship run, don’t let “The Janitor’s” age deceive you.  Light on his feet and with tremendous boxing skills and an unmatched level of explosiveness, Matyushenko is still a dynamic fighter within the UFC light heavyweight division.

Considering the UFC light heavyweight division is stacked with talent including the current champion, Jon Jones, who has already defeated Matyushenko, a chance at a title will be an arduous endeavor. But one that Vladimir welcomes with open arms.

Keep your eyes on Vladimir “The Janitor” Matyushenko as he continues to mount up victories waiting for the opportunity to regain a title contention opportunity in the future.

I welcome your comments.
