Bellator mixed martial arts (MMA) is returning to pay-per-view (PPV) this weekend (Sat. June 24, 2017) for Bellator 180 from Madison Square Garden in New York City, and it’s headlined by veterans Wanderlei Silva and Chael Sonnen.

There were numerous attempts to get the two men together, in person, for a press conference to promote the bout, however, Silva was unable to make it state-side on multiple occasions. Today (Thurs. June 22, 2017), however, that all changed as Silva and Sonnen came face-to-face for the first time in several years – and things got pretty heated.

Silva shoved Sonnen as Bellator MMA President Scott Coker stood in between the two men, and extra personal was needed to keep the pair apart. Following the altercation Silva got the opportunity to speak on the matter, claiming that he saw fear in “The Bad Guy’s” eyes when they came face-to-face (quotes via MMA Junkie):

“I saw him scared,” Silva said. “The time is going to come. Like my dad always says, ‘You can’t play with a man.’ His time is going to come.”

“The Axe Murderer” said his decision to shove Sonnen is a result of their initial physical altercation when they were coaches on The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil. During filming, Sonnen and Silva broke out into a full-out brawl and needed to be separated.

Both men claim that the other touched them first, but Silva decided to be the aggressor this time around:

“He did that before in Brazil,” Silva said. “He did it first. I did it as payback. He took me down in Brazil. I haven’t taken him down yet, but in the fight I’ll give it back to him.”

Silva then began to speak directly to Sonnen, vowing to finish the fight this weekend and re-stating his claim that the former UFC middleweight and light heavyweight title challenger was in fear when they locked eyes:

“He talks so much,” Silva said. “Everyone knows he’s a chicken. He feels my hands. I know this fight is going to finish. … I know he’s scared. I look at the fear in your eyes. Now you can’t run. When the guys lock the cage I’m going to pay you back.”

Bellator is set to stage their biggest show ever in this weekend’s (Sat., June 24, 2017) Bellator 24 from Madison Square Garden in New York, NY featuring a stacked card with the best the promotion can offer from top to bottom.

The event will be headlined by longtime rivals and MMA legends Chael Sonnen and Wanderlei Silva, whose beef goes back many years now. The two were supposed to meet at UFC 175 in 2014 following a run as opposing coaches on The Ultimate Fighter (TUF), but serious drug testing issues from both fighters out an abrupt and disappointing halt to the contest.

Three years later, neither has done much nor won a MMA bout, but their running spat will finally be put to rest. The brash personalities were in attendance at today’s Bellator 180 presser from NYC, where things expectedly got testy during the staredown, with Silva shoving Sonnen and several members of the security detail stepping in. Win or Lose vs. Wanderlei Silva, Chael Sonnen’s Shtick Is Getting Old

Chael Sonnen fights on Saturday, and the whole damn thing is getting pretty old.

All of it.

The flexing, the witticisms that have been in the can for nearly a decade, the proclamations of being undefeated and undisputed without ever holding a belt and racking up 15 professional losses in his career.

It’s painful, most of it the product of a bygone era when salesmanship was linked to verbal ingenuity and such ingenuity was lacking so badly in MMA that any amount of colorful wordsmithing was enough to get attention.

And that’s what Sonnen did.

He talked. And talked. And talked.

He wrote stuff or had people write stuff, and he delivered it with the precision and polish of an ’80s wrestling heel, and it made him rich. When his reinvention started in earnest after a 2009 loss to Demian Maia, most of it was founded on moderately exciting ground-and-pound and majorly exciting trash talk.

People loved it, hated it or loved to hate it, but it got people talking about him, and it was one of the earliest and best examples of how a mixed martial artist gets paid in the sport in modern times.

It got him across from two of the best, and it made him rich in the process. He fought Anderson Silva twice and might be more responsible for the Brazilian’s mainstream breakthrough than Silva himself, and he fought Jon Jones entirely by talking his way there—and to the associated pay cheque.

So this isn’t about hating on Sonnen. Quite the contrary.

He’s a lovable lug in his own way, a guy smirking from one side of his mouth while selling wolf tickets from the other, carnival barking ludicrousness in hopes of separating the average rube from his dollars.

But the shtick is old. It’s tired. It’s time for some new material.

How about, as an example, a win? Sonnen hasn’t posted one of those since 2013.

Granted, some of those years were taken away by failed drug tests and an associated retirement (interestingly one of the few things Sonnen has approached with considerable seriousness in his career) that would still hold a lot more clout than ripping off Superstar Billy Graham to the joy of a collection of media.

Saturday provides a chance for Sonnen to produce that new material.

Bellator: NYC opponent Wanderlei Silva is eminently beatable, a fellow 40-year-old who was never much for defending tireless wrestling and has had his own PED perils over the past few years.

He hasn’t done much since he tornadoed Brian Stann into the dirt only a few months before Sonnen scored his last win, and no one is expecting much from his Bellator debut. The fight itself is the attraction, the idea these two will finally throw hands after years of being abstractly tied to one another.

And perhaps that’s why Sonnen is as he is.

He hasn’t provided value inside the cage for an incredibly long time, but he’s still a name that looks great in the bright lights of the World’s Most Famous Arena.

All the sass and swagger he manicured for years as a UFC fixture, making him so capable as a podcaster and analyst—areas many would suggest he’d be better off retiring to for good, win or lose against Silva—are still enough to make him rich in the realm of paid fisticuffs.

It doesn’t change the fact underscoring all the bluster, though: Chael’s shtick is getting old, and without it, there isn’t much else to be said about him.

The hard part might be convincing him of that.

Wanderlei Silva has arrived in New York City on a mission prior to his fight with Chael Sonnen in a long-awaited grudge match at Bellator NYC. During a recent interview, he admitted that he has never had an opponent like Sonnen, which is something that he doesn’t like. However, he is ready for the fight, which will mark his Bellator MMA Debut.

“I’ve never had an opponent like this, and I don’t like it,” Silva told MMAjunkie Radio on Tuesday. “I had some bad guys like (Ricardo) Arona, but (Sonnen is) many times more. I need to concentrate and be ready to make the fight what I want to do.”

Silva has had several rivalries including with Arona and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson. However, none of those rivals have bothered him as much as Sonnen, who has been talking trash about him for years. If you recall, their rivalry dates back to their days under the UFC banner.

It all started when Silva confronted Sonnen in a van on the way to a public appearance and at an MMA expo. Although it was heated, they managed to avoid a physical confrontation. This led to them coaching “The Ultimate Fighter Brazil 3,” where they came to blows as opposing coaches.

It’s pretty obvious that they should not be in the same room before they get it on on Saturday night. Sonnen has already gone on record by saying the next time he sees Silva; he will fight him. The feeling is mutual for the Brazilian.

“For sure I’m going to hurt him, a lot,” Silva said. “I want to feel his blood on the ground.”

Silva was scheduled to make his Bellator MMA debut this past December, but he was not ready to fight after he was involved in a car accident one year ago that forced him to undergo surgery on his knee and shoulder.

“It’s been a long time since my last fight,” he said. “Now, finally, my technique is back. Everything is right, and I’m really happy. I’m so happy to get back to work.”

“I trained a lot of knees because I know what he wants to do,” Silva said. “He has just one movement, and in that moment, I’m going to catch him.”

Bellator NYC: Sonnen vs. Silva is scheduled to take place on Saturday, June 24, 2017, at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The prelims will air on Bellator.com at 6 p.m. ET while the Bellator 180 main card will air on Spike at 8 p.m. ET with four bouts. The Bellator NYC card will air on PPV at 10 p.m. ET with five bouts.
