Today’s UFC 224 early weigh-ins saw a significant amount of drama when touted women’s strawweight Mackenzie Dern missed weight by an astonishing seven pounds for her main card bout against Amanda Bobby Cooper at tomorrow’s pay-per-view event from Rio.

The monster miss caused Dern to be fined 10 percent of her purse by CABMMA (the Brazilian athletic commission presiding over the event) and an additional 20 percent by the UFC themselves, but perhaps more damning was the fact that it was Dern’s third time missing the strawweight non-title fight weight of 116 pounds in only six professional MMA bouts.

As expected, Cooper called her out for her unprofessionalism, and the rest of MMA Twitter, of course, did the same.

The spotlight would expectedly be on the women’s bantamweight championship fight between Amanda Nunes and Raquel Pennington in the UFC 224 main event, but with both fighters making weight effectively, all of the focus is on the hype Dern brings and her inability to make weight consistently.

That could lead to a tense staredown with Cooper at this afternoon’s ceremonial weigh-ins, which you can watch streaming live at 4 p.m EST/1 p.m. PST below:

UFC Reveals Sizable Fine For Mackenzie Dern

The UFC made Mackenzie Dern pay for missing weight.

Mackenzie Dern will pay for her latest weight miss.

Dern missed weight by an alarming seven pounds earlier today for her scheduled strawweight bout with Amanda Bobby Cooper at tomorrow’s (Sat., May 12, 2018) UFC 224 from the Jeunesse Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Although the fight will go on after Cooper agreed to still fight her in a catchweight bout according to CABMMA (the Brazilian athletic commission for MMA) official Cristiano Sampaio, Dern will be fined the standard 10 percent of her purse, which in turns goes to Cooper.

However, that won’t be the extent of her punishment, as MMAFighting.com has reported that the UFC also handed Dern an additional 20 percent fine for missing weight, which will also go to Cooper. The additional sanction resulted in a total 30 percent of her overall pay going to Cooper.

Dern has had repeated issues with making the strawweight limit of 115 pounds in the past, twice missing weight and even competed at women’s flyweight during her climb up the ranks towards her UFC debut this March, a decision win over Ashley Yoder at UFC 222. There, she made weight, but when she made a quick turnaround to face Cooper in the country of her heritage, the results were the opposite with the massive miss.

Dern has also made headlines in recent weeks for her highly-publicized split from the MMA Lab in Arizona, where reputed head coach John Crouch reportedly asked her to leave the team due to issues with commitment, to which she responded she wasn’t fond of training every day and wanted to live her life on the beach as well.

If she wants to be the star the UFC is building her up as, however, she’ll have to clean up her scale issues sooner rather than later.

Today, she’s just going to be a lot lighter in the pocketbook.

UFC 224 Media Day Staredowns: Did Amanda Cooper Snub Mackenzie Dern?

Did Amanda Bobby Cooper snub Mackenzie Dern at today’s #UFC224 media day?

The post UFC 224 Media Day Staredowns: Did Amanda Cooper Snub Mackenzie Dern? appeared first on LowKickMMA.com.

Earlier today, the media day for this Saturday night’s (May 12, 2018) UFC 224 went down from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and the fighters squared off in the traditional intense moment following the press event.

There was legend Vitor Belfort squaring off with Lyoto Machida for what is supposedly his last MMA fight in what appeared to be a bathrobe, but perhaps the most notable moment of the evening was rising talent Mackenzie Dern’s staredown with her second UFC opponent Amanda Bobby Cooper.

With both women dressed to the nines for the promotion for the buzzing bout, Dern and Cooper squared off in a polite-enough faceoff before Dern attempted to shake Cooper’s hand at the end but was denied. It was maybe a momentary slip, however, as Cooper went back to offer her hand shortly thereafter.

Rose Namajunas Refuses Conor McGregor’s Online Apology: ‘F**k That’

Rose Namajunas wasn’t about to accept Conor McGregor’s apology on Instagram:

The post Rose Namajunas Refuses Conor McGregor’s Online Apology: ‘F**k That’ appeared first on LowKickMMA.com.

Many prominent MMA personalities were affected by Conor McGregor’s chaotic Brooklyn outburst two days before April 7’s UFC 223.

The attack, where the former champion threw a metal dolly threw a bus containing rival Khabib Nurmagomedov, left two fighters injured and unable to compete on the event and also forced a third fight off the card when McGregor friend (and accomplice) Artem Lobov was pulled from his scheduled fight with Alex Caceres.

But the incident, which eventually saw McGregor incarcerated for assault charges overnight and awaiting court this June, almost had a far more impactful effect on the event, as UFC women’s strawweight Rose Namajunas was in the bus and visibly shaken by the events, to the point where she even considered not fighting Joanna Jedrzejczyk on the card.

While “Thug” Rose did decide to fight on and beat her rival by unanimous decision, things are still not good between her and McGregor. According to Outside the Cage on Twitter, Namajunas had a seething reply to “The Notorious” when he tried to apologize to her on Instagram, simply saying, “F*** that, call Pat,” in reference to her longtime partner Pat Barry.

Namajunas also addressed the incident during a recent appearance on The Jim & Sam Show (via MMA Mania), noting that the situation is far from ideal because even though she picked up a second victory over a woman who just months ago was talked up as the best female MMA fighter of all-time, she’s only asked about the attack, so that accomplishment will always be overshadowed by what McGregor did:

“It just sucks because that’s the question that’s always gonna be asked. And it’s like, ‘Look what I did.’”

A fair point from “Thug” Rose to be certain because her second consecutive win over a historic women’s champion is undoubtedly being overshadowed by a needless, violent event that not only injured innocent people but forced three fights off of the most anticipated pay-per-view of the year thus far.

The focus will likely always remain on McGregor and his antics from the weekend, however, and it’s hard to look past Namajunas’ desire for her efforts in the cage to be focused on rather than a crime committed by a superstar who has shown he cares about little else than going off the rails in his post-Mayweather period of debauchery.

In that sense, you can see why she isn’t accepting McGregor’s apology.

She may essentially be retired from MMA, but Ronda Rousey is still drawing the attention of the sport’s top female fighter.

Rousey made a successful WWE pro-wrestling debut at April’s WrestleMania 34 and in the days since, she’s seemingly opened up about a litany of topics in interviews.

The hottest topic, of course, is her precipitous MMA downfall brought by losses to Holly Holm and Amanda Nunes and how she’s chosen to deal with it. The legendary former UFC women’s bantamweight champion recently admitted she never learned how to lose, and that she was tired of fighting but felt obligated to carry the division she made famous. But a more controversial statement also came from the “Rowdy” one when she said that ‘hearing her speak was a privilege’ and one the media had abused.

The words have drawn the ire of prominent women’s MMA names like Miesha Tate and even longtime Rousey rival Cris Cyborg, who told EsNews (via MMA Junkie) that considering what she’s been through, she hoped Rousey was respectful to people:

“I think I don’t need to tell her anything. I think life has taught her a lot of things. I think a lot of things happened through her life and her career. I hope she’s learned something from that. Be humble and respect people. I think this is most important.”

An ambiguous well-wishing to be sure, yet Cyborg followed it up with a more forceful suggestion that if Rousey was done fighting, she was running away from her issues and therefore nothing had changed:

“I don’t know her in person. I think if she’s not coming back to fight and she’s running away, that’s not going to change anything. But I’m not here to judge anybody.”

“Rowdy” vs. Cyborg was long considered the top women’s fight the UFC could book but after years of back-and-forth fluff involving Rousey forcing Cyborg to cut down to an unattainable 135 pounds allegedly due to her history with performance-enhancing drugs, it fizzled before it ever took off the ground. The fight was never really close to actually happening, and that may be a good thing considering Rousey’s problems with elite strikers in her final fights.

Cyborg has moved on to her rightful spot as the dominant UFC women’s featherweight champion, and she’s also passed Rousey as the greatest women’s combatant in MMA history.

Despite that fact, however, we may never hear Cyborg’s opinions of Rousey stop, especially if the former champion continues to suggest it’s a privilege for the media to hear her speak.
