UFC women’s flyweight Cynthia Calvillo believes she can secure a title shot with a victory over Jéssica Andrade this weekend at UFC 266.

Calvillo fell to just the second loss of her MMA career when she was last in action at UFC 255. Against former title challenger Katlyn Chookagian, the 34-year-old was on the wrong side of a unanimous decision.

However, Calvillo’s record certainly did enough to bring her into title contention beforehand. The Californian has defeated the likes of Joanne Calderwood, Cortney Casey, and Jessica Eye since debuting in 2017. A win against former UFC Women’s Strawweight Champion and Valentina Shevchenko’s most recent challenger Andrade on Saturday could see her first shot at gold secured.

Speaking to MMA News’ own James Lynch, Calvillo previewed her 10th walk to the Octagon. According to the #5-ranked women’s flyweight, Andrade won’t be able to handle her pressure and speed in the UFC 266 main card opener. The 34-year-old anticipates a submission or ground-and-pound finish.

“I feel like I’m gonna outwork her. I think I’m gonna be a lot faster. I’ll be able to outclass her with my striking. I just gotta weather the storm. But I feel like I’ll be able to pick my shots, and find the right entries, and, like I said, take her down, submit her or ground-and-pound. But I’m super confident. I really feel like that’s how the fight’s gonna go.”

Addressing what’s next for her if she is to defeat the former 115-pound champ, Calvillo told MMA news that’s she’s anticipating a shot at flyweight gold soon after having her hand raised inside the T-Mobile Arena this weekend.

“With her (Andrade) being (a) former champion and being the number-one contender, everybody else in the top 5 has already fought Valentina. And of course, Lauren’s up next, so I think that, of course, if I win I’m definitely gonna be up next for the title. But if it doesn’t happen, like I said, we’re gonna keep it going. We’re gonna get busy. I’m down to fight whenever in December, as soon as possible.”

If Calvillo can secure her place opposite the champ, she’ll square off with either Valentina Shevchenko or Lauren Murphy. The pair will clash for the title a few bouts after Calvillo vs. Andrade at UFC 266. In the co-main event, “Lucky” will look to end the dominant reign of “Bullet.”

Shevchenko, meanwhile, will hope to record her sixth successful title defense. If she does so, she’ll maintain her place as one of the most dominant champions in the UFC. Calvillo will certainly be keeping a close eye on that fight if she emerges victorious in her own earlier in the night.

Do you think Cynthia Calvillo would be next in line for a shot at the flyweight belt with a win this weekend?

Valentina Shevchenko has insisted that she’ll be reigning atop the UFC flyweight division forever.

Currently riding on a seven-fight win streak with her last loss coming by split decision to Amanda Nunes—a fighter widely considered to be the pinnacle of women’s MMA—Valentina Shevchenko seems almost unstoppable as she continues to dominate the contenders in her 125lb weight class.

While there are a number of emerging talents in the women’s flyweight division, Valentina Shevchenko has no intention of allowing the prospects to dethrone her as she promises that she’ll remain the champion for a very long time.

While speaking to Fanatics View, Valentina Shevchenko boldly claimed that nobody will be taking her title as she sees herself leading the pack for years to come.

“Being champion of 125, I welcome everyone. Yeah, you can fight here, but you’re never gonna be the champion here. Because I’m here forever, for a long time.” Shevchenko asserted.

At 33-years of age, Valentina expressed just how long she believes she can continue to dominate competitors at the highest level.

“As much as I can. As much as my body, my mental health is saying, ‘Valentina, you can do it. Go.’ And yeah, as long as I have [this] feeling, I will do it. And I [haven’t] lost not a little bit of this feeling,” Stated Shevchenko. “And every year, I’m just feeling stronger and stronger, more technical, more [sharp], and more confident.”

Valentina Shevchenko will put her flyweight title on the line when she faces #3-ranked Lauren Murphy in a five-round co-main event fight which will take place at UFC 266 this Saturday.

How long do you believe Valentina will keep hold of the UFC flyweight champion?

Alana McLaughlin and her arduous life journey were embedded with identity issues from the start, but that ultimately led to her successful MMA debut.

At the age of ten, McLaughlin’s parents began to take notice that their young child had an indelible desire to transition. McLaughlin’s actions were often met with pushback, as her parents have been resistant to her identity/transgender issues. While enduring the throes of physical and sexual abuse at a young age, she has fought persistently to be identified in the way she views herself. McLaughlin made history by becoming the second U.S. transgender fighter to come out.

In addition, she won her fight against newcomer Celine Provost by rear-naked choke at the recent Combate Global event.

McLaughlin was raped and traumatized throughout much of her early childhood. Dirt-poor, growing up in South Carolina, McLaughlin began taking estrogen pills she bought online behind her parents’ backs. Once the medication began to make her chest swell, she stopped taking it in fear of being caught by her parents. Years later and still puzzled by identity issues, McLaughlin’s struggles led her to join the U.S. Special Forces.

On the September 10th Combate Global card, McLaughlin–the second openly transgender fighter won and did so with a tight rear-naked choke submission. Much like her life, McLaughlin faced adversity early on in the fight but rallied back to make history for the transgender community. Upon hearing about McLaughlin’s success as the first open U.S. trans fighter, some outspoken MMA personalities like Sean Strickland have taken umbrage with that and especially her latest win.

After seizing her first win in MMA, McLaughlin believes her painful life journey has prepared her for the high-pressure moments of cage fighting. Once on the battlefield bandaging up wounded soldiers, McLaughlin is confident her military experience will only pay dividends down the line in her fighting career.

“On one hand inside I know who I am, but I’m trying to deny it,” said McLaughlin via The Guadian. “I’m telling myself: ‘No, you can do this, you can do this!’ I’m giving myself a pep talk, telling myself I am a man.”

Raped at a young age, McLaughlin was constantly hiding in thorny raspberry fields as a kid to deter the trauma that followed her during childhood. Her struggles and tribulations are out in the open, and that in itself is a giant win for the transgender community.

“My whole life I was a runt, I was undersized, I was bullied, I was raped, I was beaten, like I did not have an easy time,” said McLaughlin. “The story of my life has been trying to physically resist people that were larger and stronger and more skilled than me.”

While much of her life was spent avoiding physical altercations, McLaughlin is an MMA fighter now. After securing the win in her debut, fans will be clamoring to see what’s next for “Lady Feral”. A living inspiration for the trans community, McLaughlin’s presence in MMA has been exciting and polarizing.

Is there a place for transgender athletes in all sports?

For a while now, the idea of a Ronda Rousey versus Floyd Mayweather fight of some kind has intrigued casual fans. They’re similarly sized, Rousey is amazingly dominant against other women, Mayweather is hated for his history of domestic abuse and being unrepentant about it, Mayweather is “just a boxer” while Rousey is a mixed martial artist, etc. Of course, it would never, ever happen in real life for a number of reasons, the most obvious one being that no athletic commission would ever sanction any kind of man vs. woman fight.

Game designer Richie Branson found a way to have some fun and give everyone a little taste of what they want. In the legendary Street Fighter series of video games, man vs. woman fights are common, and the legacy female fighters (especially Chun-Li) are hugely popular among the fanbase. These days, a lot of PC games have enthusiastic fans known as modders who modify all sorts of things and release add-ons that can affect just about anything from graphics to sounds to gameplay. So what Branson did was dig around in the PC version of Street Fighter IV, and play with the graphics to make something approximating Floyd Mayweather vs. Ronda Rousey.

Here’s what Branson wrote in his YouTube post (video embedded at the top of the article) showing off his work:

Well, now we know who would win if Floyd Mayweather and Ronda Rousey fought. I got bored and decided to play around with some texture files in my PC installation of Street Fighter IV. The result is this Mayweather vs. Rousey mod, lol. To eliminate bias, i simulated the Mayweather v. Rousey fight with both fighters controlled by the CPU. I’ll be making these edited skins available over the weekend! Special thanks to Ayiep27, and Farcryer.
