Former UFC heavyweight Yorgan De Castro doesn’t believe Jon Jones will face many problems when the former light heavyweight champion finally makes the jump to a new weight class.

“The Mad Titan” recently appeared on the MMA Fighting podcast Trocação Franca ahead of his Eagle FC main event slot opposite Junior dos Santos on May 20. When asked how he feels “Bones” will fare as a heavyweight, De Castro identified Jones’s well-rounded skillset as a challenge for other fighters in the weight class.

“It would have to be someone with good ground game, like Fabricio Werdum, to maybe give him some problem on the ground. I don’t see anyone else at heavyweight with good enough wrestling or ground game. And if they have good wrestling, Jones will be superior on the feet.”

Jones hopes to face former heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic in September for his heavyweight debut. De Castro offered a blunt assessment of how he feels that particular fight would go.

“I think Jones will run through Stipe.”

“I think [Jones} will take him down and win by TKO. He’s been waiting two years for this. He’s walking around at 255 pounds but is so strong. And cardio will be the key. He has so much cardio. He hits pads for two hours and doesn’t slow down.”

Inactive for over two years now, Jones hasn’t fought since his unanimous decision victory over Dominick Reyes at UFC 247. The 34-year old former champion has repeatedly teased a move up to heavyweight in his time away from the cage, but so far nothing has been officially booked by the UFC.

Yorgan De Castro successfully debuted in Khabib Nurmagomedov’s Eagle FC last January when he finished Shaun Asher with a guillotine choke just over a minute into the fight. The Contender Series 2019 contract winner went 1-3 in the UFC from 2019-2021 but is now on a two-fight win streak heading into his Eagle FC 47 main event fight against former UFC heavyweight champion Junior Dos Santos.

What do you think about Yorgan De Castro’s comments on how Jon Jones would do against Stipe Micoc?

Sparring Partner Picks Jon Jones To ‘Run Through’ Stipe Miocic, Defeat Francis Ngannou

Former two-time UFC light heavyweight champion, Jon Jones has received the backing of new training partner, recent Eagle FC debutante and UFC alum, Yorgan de Castro to defeat current undisputed heavyweight champion, Francis Ngannou, after convincingly “running through” Stipe Miocic.

Jones, who has been sidelined since February 2020, most recently featured in the main event of UFC 247 back, successfully defending his undisputed light heavyweight crown with a close, debated unanimous decision win over Dominick Reyes.

Jones would go on to officially relinquish the title in August of that year ahead of an expected move to the promotion’s heavyweight division, however, at the time of publication, Jones has yet to feature under the UFC banner since his judging win against Reyes.

Jon Jones remains hopeful of drawing Stipe Miocic at a September UFC event

Initially targeted to return this summer in a potential interim heavyweight title offing against the previously mentioned former two-time heavyweight kingpin, Miocic, the pairing was ultimately shelved due to scheduling issues – with Jones now confident of drawing Miocic in September instead

Speaking with MMA Fighting recently ahead of his Eagle FC outing against former UFC heavyweight champion, Junior dos Santos, the above mentioned, de Castro claimed Jones’ cardio and overall striking expertise will lead him to victory against Miocic.

“I don’t see anyone else at heavyweight with a good enough wrestling or ground game,” Yorgan de Castro said of Jon Jones. “And if they have good wrestling, Jones will be superior on the feet. The Stipe (Miocic) fight will be perfect (for Jon Jones). Stipe weighs the same and has good boxing. I think Jones will run through Stipe.”

As far as a fight with heavyweight king and knockout artist, Ngannou is concerned, de Castro also sides with Jones to defeat the Batie native.

“(Francis Ngannou) will be out nine months to fix his knee and then needs six months in camp,” de Castro said. “Jon Jones will already be 35 (years old), and Francis will be, what? I think Jones fights once or twice more. He told me he’ll fight three times and that’s it. But if he does fight (Ngannou), it’s hard to go against Jones.” (Transcribed by Bloody Elbow)

Dana White wasn’t lying when he said he was cutting 60 fighters last December.

The UFC would start by parting ways with notable names such as former UFC title challengers, Yoel Romero, ‘Rumble’ Johnson, Ray Borg and others.

The month of May has brought even more ‘contract-ripping’ as the UFC has released nine more fighters from their roster.

Luke Sanders, Anthony Birchak, Aalon Cruz, KB Bhullar, Jordan Griffin, and Bartosz Fabinski were released earlier this month. The latest to have their contract terminated are UFC veterans Yorgan de Castro, Oskar Piechota, and Justine Kish, who have a combined 17 fights inside the Octagon.

Here’s exactly how the new free agents did with the promotion.

Luke Sanders (3-5)

Anthony Birchak (2-4)

Aalon Cruz (0-2)

KB Bhullar (0-2)

Bartosz Fabinski (4-3)* [one fight was held in Cage Warriors because of COVID-19 cancellation]

Yorgan de Castro (1-3)

Oskar Piechota (2-3, 1 NC)

Justine Kish (3-4)

Do you think Yorgan de Castro or anyone else on this list should still be in the UFC?

Talk about a spectacular comeback. Returning to the Octagon for the first time since August of 2016, Jarjis ‘Man Mountain’ Danho has made his comeback with a vengeance, stopping Yorgan de Castro with a huge opening round knockout win at UFC Vegas 23.

Snapping a five-year hiatus where he saw attempted pairings with the likes of Greg Hardy and Tai Tuivasa shelved, Danjo featured for the first time since a majority draw against Christian Colombo.

Uncorking a massive counter-right overhand right on the temple of de Castro, Danho flattened the Cape Verde native to the canvas, with referee, Mike Beltran immediately rushing in to halt the action. Incredible return for the Syrian-born Hammers Team trainee.

In the UFC Fight Island 4 co-main event we have an exciting heavyweight bout. Yorgan De Castro is looking to bounced back after suffering the first loss of his career last time out. Carlos Felipe is hoping to do the same after falling short in his UFC debut earlier this year.

Round 1: Carlos Felipe wings a big punch in but it misses wildly. Yorgan De Castro is pawing out with his hands and trying to hit low leg kicks. Felipe throws a big overhand right it makes a big thudding sound but De Castro managed to block it. De Castro steams forward to get his back off the cage. Felipe continues to press forward. De Castro is firing back to try to keep him off but nothing is really landing big right now. Felipe eats a big leg kick which clearly hurt. He fires back with a straight right but is unable to get out of the way of these low kicks. Felipe is starting to put his hands together at the end of round one. He’s clearly got fast hands and his power is starting to get a reaction from his opponent as round one comes to a close.

Round 2: Both men come out firing at the start of round two. De Castro is very visibly trying to take the initiative here but he eats a big shot coming in. Felipe goes to the body before heading back upstairs – he seems to have his opponent hurt for a moment. De Castro clinches up against the fence, threatens for the takedown before they break and get back to striking range. De Castro seems fine, better than fine actually he’s emerged from the latest flurry of strikes looking excellent. Felipe doesn’t let his opponent gain too much momentum and gets back to hitting the body impressively. They clinch against the cage again but the referee takes the position away from De Castro who ignored several warnings about grabbing the fence. Felipe continues to push forward with lots of volume. He punches his way in then clinches up against the fence. The referee again breaks the position due to another fence grab – this time from Felipe. Both men are swinging as the round ends – they stare each other down before heading back to their respective corners.

Round 3: Both men come out swinging once again. Felipe is landing lots of volume. De Castro is winding up for power. Felipe comes out of the flurry better. He is able to keep up his output and De Castro is just covering up really. Another clinch position is broken up by the ref. De Castro shoots for a takedown but is unable to get it, they clinch up again but are quickly broken up. Another clinch position. Not a lot of action. Another break from the referee – this fight is starting to get into a pattern. De Castro keeps going straight back in for the clinch. He’s tapping his opponent with short shots but the referee just keeps separating them. We head into the final minute. De Castro again bulldozes forward and looks to hold up against the fence. Ten seconds left they are again split and neither man is able to land anything significant before the end of the final round.
