UFC featherweight contender Zabit Magomedsharipov wants to fight for the title next. But if that doesn’t pan out, he has another option in Yair Rodriguez.

Magomedsharipov recently went 6-0 with the promotion following his unanimous decision victory over Calvin Kattar at UFC Moscow earlier this month. He called for a title shot soon after as he felt he had deserved it.

“I think it is going to be a very exciting fight; I can’t wait to see it,” Magomedsharipov said of the UFC 245 co-headliner between Max Holloway and Alexander Volkanovski next month. “I will also be happy to face the winner of this upcoming fight.

“I think I fully deserve the title fight and after enough preparation, I should be more than ready to have a go at the title.”

However, some believe he needs to compete in a five-rounder first before potentially taking on the winner of that fight. That’s fine by the Dagestan native as his manager Rizvan Magomedov revealed they are looking at other options too:

“Obviously we will wait for the result of the Max Holloway vs Volkanovski competition,” Magomedov said in a recent interview translated by BJ Penn. “Let’s see how this fight goes. If we get a chance to go to the post-fight belt competition, of course we will.

“But if that’s not possible, we’d like to fight Yair Rodriguez. The winner or loser of the Korean Zombie fight with Brian Ortega is also a good option. However, this time there will be a five-round fight and we will show everyone that the Zabit is ready for it.”

Magomedsharipov and Rodriguez have been slated to fight for a while but it’s yet to come to fruition. Maybe we could see that next.

Zabit Magomedsharipov believes he is deserving of the next crack at the UFC featherweight title.

Magomedsharipov made it six straight wins with the promotion following a unanimous decision triumph over Calvin Kattar in the UFC Moscow headliner on Saturday. Kattar served as the Dagestan native’s toughest task yet and even troubled Magomedsharipov in the third round. However, Magomedsharipov did enough to get the win.

As for his slow third round showing, the 28-year-old attributed it to an infection he had while he was training in Thailand:

“I knew he was a tough guy,” he said via translator about Kattar during the ESPN post fight show (via MMA Fighting). “We didn’t expect him to block so much, so I had to kick him in the legs. This is what was different from our expectations.

“… I got a little tired in the third round because I had an infection when I was in Thailand. I have to take antibiotics, so I think that influenced my performance.”

Regardless, Magomedsharipov got the victory and is now seemingly in title contention. Featherweight champion Max Holloway is scheduled to defend his title against Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 245 next month.

And Magomedsharipov wants to face the winner next:

“I think it is going to be a very exciting fight; I can’t wait to see it,” Magomedsharipov added of the UFC 245 co-headliner. “I will also be happy to face the winner of this upcoming fight.

“I think I fully deserve the title fight and after enough preparation, I should be more than ready to have a go at the title.”

Do you think Magomedsharipov should get the next crack at the title?

The UFC has become a star-driven business over the years, and as we move into 2018 there are a number of fighters who are vying to become the next big thing in the promotion.

In this article, we’ll home in on ten fighters who have shown the potential make a big impact in the coming year, from breakthrough prospects poised to take the next step towards stardom to established talents who are on the verge of becoming major draws for the UFC.

Brian Ortega

Brian ’T-City’ Ortega has been tipped as a star of the future for some time now, and 2018 looks like being the year that could see him fulfill that destiny.

Ortega breezed through 2017 with his unbeaten career record still intact at 13-0-1, while also earning the biggest victory to date by submitting Cub Swanson via guillotine choke in December.

That fight proved to be another Brazilian jiu-jitsu masterclass and it marked the 26-year-old’s fifth win in a row inside the Octagon, taking him to No.3 in the featherweight rankings and on the verge of title contention heading into the new year.

Ortega also has the kind of look and laid-back personality that suggests widespread popularity could be within his grasp, and Dana White is known to be a big believer in his ability to become a big star.

”The kid is incredible and he is absolutely, positively the future,” White declared after his latest victory, while also praising him for being a “grounded, humble, down-to-earth kid,” who told the UFC president immediately after his latest victory that he wants to use his growing reputation to do charity work.
