UFC 148: Chael Sonnen Compares Anderson Silva to ‘Wimp’, Mike Tyson

Arguably the biggest rematch in UFC history will take place this Saturday night at UFC 148 as Chael Sonnen challenges Anderson SIlva for the UFC Middleweight Championship. Sonnen gave Silva everything he could handle for four-and-a-half rounds before Silva caught him in a triangle choke, and retained the title.

After that fight, we learned Silva entered the fight with a rib injury, and Sonnen entered the fight with illegally high levels of testosterone. How much of that factored into the fight? We don’t know, but we’ll get a better idea after Saturday’s fight.

No one hypes a fight like Chael Sonnen. Last week on 750AM The Game, he was at it again. When asked for his thoughts on Anderson Silva, Sonnen compared the No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter to Mike Tyson:

Yeah he’s just a person. You hear those things, but they told us that about Mike Tyson, too, and what a wimp that guy turned out to be when he finally got some real competition. He’s kind of like the Mike Tyson of our era, where they say certain things but at the end of the day, when they lock that cage door, he’s not going to have a friend and he’s not going to have a two-by-four and I’m sure he could use either one when I get my hands on him.

When asked how difficult it was to get a rematch, Sonnen again compared Silva to Tyson:

It was very hard to get the initial match. I’ve been calling this guy out for six years. They told us for years when I was growing up that Mike Tyson was the best in the world. The truth was he wasn’t even the best in the country. He never made a world or Olympic team and he could never beat Evander Holyfield who lived two states over. They just kept him away from him and lied to the entire planet and told them he was the best when he wasn’t. It’s a lot like that with Anderson. I’ve been telling him for six years I’m the best, but he’s got to hold onto the championship. They kept putting obstacles in front of me and I kept having to go through them. That’s just the way it goes. I’m not complaining about that, but that’s been my path to him, and he ducked and dodged as best he could, but he’s narrowed down now.

It’s hard to say how much of that is hyping the fight, and how much of that Sonnen actually believes. To say Silva hasn’t fought the best in the world is crazy. Since winning the title from Rich Franklin in 2006, Silva’s defeated the likes of Dan Henderson, Rich Franklin (again), Demian Maia (who defeated Sonnen at UFC 95), Chael Sonnen, Vitor Belfort and Yushin Okami. Silva even moved up to Light Heavyweight and knocked out former Light Heavyweight champ Forrest Griffin.

To say Silva hasn’t fought the best in the world is just wrong. But that’s Sonnen. Sure, he’s hyping the fight. That’s part of it, but you know part of him actually believes what he’s saying.

Saturday night, Silva will have another opportunity to shut Sonnen up. If Sonnen pulls off the victory, just imagine the things he’ll say.

Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson and the UFC make their return to Japan this weekend at UFC 144 (check out the Japanese Promo Video here).

Jackson will face Ryan Bader with an opportunity to get back in the win column following his submission loss to UFC Light Heavyweight Champ, Jon Jones, at UFC 135.

Bader, who was also submitted by Jon Jones (that guy’s pretty good), is coming off a knock out victory of Jason Brilz at UFC 139. Jackson talked about the matchup and his return to Japan on 95.7 the Game.

Jackson made his name in MMA when he fought in the Japanese MMA organization, Pride, and is very excited to fight in Japan again:

I’m really close to the Japanese fans. They’re very respectful and it’s just hard not to like those guys because of the way they treat fighters and stuff. It’s just easy to fall in love with them.

Most people will tell you Rampage was a different fighter when he fought in Japan. People that say that have this power bomb finish in mind. Rampage, what about that power bomb?

That was the coolest thing that I have done in a long time. It was pretty crazy that the power bomb was so powerful. I had no idea that it was going to be so powerful. Just something I always wanted to do because I was such a fan of pro wrestling.

On to Ryan Bader. What can fans expect from this fight?

You can expect for me to be as outgoing as possible. I’m going to try to end the fight as fast as possible and put on one of the most exciting shows I’ve ever done. I have trained really hard so I can go hard the whole fight and that’s what I plan to do.

Jackson was asked what he has learned from watching film on Bader.

I don’t watch film of my opponents. I never really did. Yeah I like surprises so I don’t really watch. I know he’s a great wrestler and a big puncher. I’m looking forward to the challenge. Whatever it is I’m looking forward to it.

Film? Rampage don’t need to watch no film!

While I don’t see Rampage slamming Bader in this fight, I do see him finishing it violently.

UFC: Alistair Overeem Talks Junior Dos Santos and Brock Lesnar

The No. 1 contender for the UFC Heavyweight Championship, Alistair Overeem, dropped by XX 1090 in San Diego with Scott and B/R today and said, among other things, that he is better than UFC Heavyweight Champ Junior Dos Santos, and Brock Lesnar is a one-dimensional fighter.

So what does he think of the man he just defeated by knockout, Brock Lesnar?

I respect Brock for what he did. Great for the sport, great for the UFC, and I mean, he came in there with minimum experience and he took on the strongest heavyweights in the world and he beat them and he became champion. That is something that I think earns respect and admiration. He pulled it off. Now it’s come a time where his game needed to be upgraded, and he didn’t upgrade it in time. Then you’re going to fall to other fighters because the sport is always adapting and always changing.

Tough to argue with that assessment from Overeem. Lesnar was a monster and a world-class wrestler, but never developed much of a striking game and could not take a punch to the face without turtling up.

Overeem added:

(Brock Lesnar) is what I call one-dimensional, but a very good one-dimensional. I think he’s like 275 pounds of mass coming at you with violence, taking you down and doing his thing, so he was really good at what he did, but the problem with him is if you’re too one-dimensional, people are really clever and catch up because there are certain ways to beat certain opponents. That’s one of my strengths. I always change, I always adapt, I always improve.

Overeem is still pretty complimentary of Lesnar, even after their fight, where Brock looked like he had one foot out the retirement door already. Defeating Brock Lesnar earned Overeem a title shot against UFC Heavyweight Champion Junior Dos Santos. A date has yet to be set for the fight, but Overeem thinks it will happen “sooner rather than later.” The fight promises to be a stand-up war, with Overeem and Dos Santos arguably the two best strikers in the UFC’s Heavyweight division.

Overeem is confident he will be victorious:

There’s different ways to beat Dos Santos. Basically, the way I see it is I’m bigger, I’m more experienced, I’m better, better in the stand-up, better on the ground, and obviously, he’s a very dangerous opponent, but there’s so many ways to beat him. I still have to sit down and study him a little bit, but anything is possible with him.

Overeem is bigger, but time will tell if he is better. Sooner rather than later.

UFC: Jon Fitch a Tad Upset About Rumored Nick Diaz vs. Georges St. Pierre Bout

UFC Welterweight, Jon Fitch, has been asking for a rematch with Welterweight Champion, Georges St. Pierre for what seems like three years now. Fitch is coming of a Draw versus BJ Penn, and will be sidelined until December due to shoulder surgery. He’s 21-1-1 in his last 23 fights. That one loss was the lopsided defeat to GSP.

After hearing of the new of a Champion vs. Champion matchup between Nick Diaz and Georges St. Pierre rumored to take place in December, Fitch took to Twitter to vent his frustration.

Fitch posted, “why would that fight be good. Diaz got title cuz Shields vacated the belt. Paper champ.”

He later posted, “Let’s see Shields vs. Diaz for number one contender while I’m hurt.”

He first calls Nick Diaz a “paper champ.” Then proposes a No. 1 contender’s match between teammates Nick Diaz and Jake Shields.

Does he mentiuon teammates fighting each other for the No. 1 contender spot because Dana White kept pushing Fitch to fight his teammate Josh Koscheck in order to get a title fight versus GSP?

He wasn’t finished, “Keep that going Fitch Fanatics GSPvsDiaz=bullsh**”

Fitch may disagree with the match-up selection, but outside of Anderson Silva, Diaz is the only opponent for GSP the majority of fans want to see.

As reported on BJPENN.com, Dream lightweight champion Shinya Aoki has pulled out of his scheduled bout with Ultimate Fighter Alum Shane Nelson on May 29th at DREAM 17. Nelson, who just accepted the fight, was coming off a victory over Jai Bradney at Nitro 2 on March 20th

Aoki, who is coming off his quick disposal of Lyle Beerboh at Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Daley on April 9th, did not give a reason for the withdrawal. Instead of Nelson, he will face UFC veteran, Rich Clementi. Clementi is coming off a loss to Reza Madadi at Superior Challenge 7 on April 30th, and has lost 3 of his last 5 fights overall.

This is not the first change of opponents for Aoki on the DREAM 17 card. He was first scheduled to face Antonio McKee, who was also coming off a loss at UFC 125. McKee said he had Visa issues that forced him to pull out of the fight.

So, for now, it’s Aoki – Clementi at DREAM 17: Fight For Japan.
