Dana White and Brock Lesnar announced in a Media Call today that Lesnar is again plagued with Diverticulitis and is forced to pull out of his UFC 131 headlining bout against Junior dos Santos. Lesnar says it is not as bad as last time but he was unable to train properly for his fight. Shane Carwin will be stepping in to replace Lesnar. Lesnar says he is not retiring and this is not the end of his career.

This is another disappointing announcement for UFC as they recently lost their UFC 130 headliners, Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard due to both fighters suffering injuries. Now the long awaited Brock Lesnar vs. Junior dos Santos fight coming off their coaching stints on TUF 13 will be indefinitely on hold as Lesnar contemplates his next steps which could include surgery.

Tito Ortiz and Matt Mitrione’s Fight Broken Up By George Sotiropoulos (VIDEO)

Roy Nelson took it to heart when Zuffa suggested the fighters become more involved in social media, so he used his phone to film a minute of words exchanged between Tito Ortiz and Matt Mitrione at The Fight Summit. We’re not sure if a physical fight would have broken out but Mitrione does get close enough to Ortiz to excite some kind of violence. At that point, good guy George Sotiropoulos stepped in to help a Zuffa rep break things up. Man, how cool is this? It’s a fight between 2 fighters filmed by a fighter and broken up by a fighter. And it’s all far more entertaining than last night’s TUF episode. Watch out media and production crews, these guys are gunning for our jobs.

The fight stemmed from an interview Mitrione gave to Ariel Helwani during The MMA Hour, saying Ortiz will likely pull out of his fight with Ryan Bader and his wife Jenna Jameson will step in:

“I think it’s awesome… awesome that the UFC is finally doing this. I think that it’s a great promotion that they’re finally letting women fight for their man’s honor. I think that’s a great thing. We all know that Tito’s gonna give some type of excuse and back out, so Jenna’s gonna have to step in and fight [Ryan] Bader for Tito’s honor. Bader, be really careful because it’s a trap fight. We all know that she’s awesome off her back and she’s got phenomenal top control, but remember that she doesn’t choke easily.”

And Another Fighter Criticizes Georges St. Pierre

Georges St. Pierre’s victory over Jake Shields at UFC 129 was just another Unanimous Decision win to throw on a pile of Decision wins. Georges St. Pierre’s victory over Jake Shields at UFC 129 was just another Unanimous Decision win to throw on a pile of Decision wins. Some would argue he was given the best they could throw at him and even with a corneal abrasion, he beat Shields solidly…but those “some” happen not to be several UFC fighters who seem to agree that GSP has lost his mojo. Soon after GSP’s win over Shields, the media was knocking on Jon Fitch’s door to get his opinion on the ongoing criticisms of St. Pierre:

“I think, you know, I deserve some of that criticism too. But when he’s dominating somebody that well, I think it’s up to the champ to put a little more pressure on somebody in the fourth and fifth round. When you’ve secured a pretty solid lead on the scorecards after three rounds, I think a little bit more pressure, because he never really opened up more than a couple jabs and an overhand right. I mean, double up on the right, something.”

Then a less diplomatic Chael Sonnen decided to chime in with his criticisms of GSP via Twitter:

I watch hockey and rugby. Anything that has a remote chance of breaking out into a fight. Which is exactly why I stopped watching George.

*Note… Guess we should be thankful, Sonnen keeps it brief on Twitter. We figure if he was doing time for his money laundering, he’d probably have brought us a War Machine-esque Big House Blog.

And now, Matt Hughes who has been finished by Georges St. Pierre twice (TKO in 2006 and armbar in 2007) wrote in his own blog:

As for the GSP/Shields fight, I really believed GSP was going to tear Shields up. The fight didn’t go like I thought it would at all. Let me tell everybody now, I like GSP, he’s a good guy and he’s somebody I wouldn’t mind sitting next to on a plane ride or at a supper table. So don’t think that I’m talking out of bitterness for the two losses, I’m speaking through experienced eyes that have been in these situations. GSP actually looked worse in this fight than I’ve ever seen him before. I really feel like Georges fights not to lose, he just doesn’t fight to win anymore. I like Georges, I like watching him fight, I wish there was some way I could help him to get that hunger back inside of him. Georges has the potential of being so much better than what we’ve seen recently. If Jake had won one more round he would have won the fight, based on how the judges scored it. So an interesting fight and a little disappointing at being the last fight of the night.

Are these fair assessments? Darren Wong of Bleacher Report has made some good points against the criticism. And regardless of any negative reactions, St. Pierre continues to dominate the UFC promotion as its most popular and marketable fighter. He even has a mobile application coming out soon.

So…when you’re the most recognized and talked about MMA fighter in the world, you’re bound to experience both love and hate. There’s an old saying from an American showman, PT Barnum, who said, “I don’t care what you say about me, just spell my name right.” Not only do we always remember the “s” in “Georges” but who else is known simply by their initials, GSP? …Wonder if Georges St. Pierre cares so much, what these guys are saying…

Several of Strikeforce elite female fighters made their first trip out to The Fight Summit, which is an MMA business conference run by Zuffa. As the promotion now resides under the Zuffa umbrella, Strikeforce fighters including: Miesha Tate, Cris Cyborg, Amanda Nunes, Sarah Kaufmann, Elaina Maxwell and Marloes Coenen attended the 2 day conference in Las Vegas. Were there discussions of seeing these females sometime in the future fighting under the UFC promotion? That may be very top secret, but we do know that the ladies and all the Strikeforce fighters participated in new photo shoots and videos promos for upcoming Strikeforce broadcasts and advertising.

And now some photos of Miesha Tate:

Stephan Bonnar seems to be the US Representative of the UFC as he is now set to fight Karlos Vemola, a Czechoslovakian fighter who won a TKO victory over Seth Petruzelli at UFC 122 back in November. This will be Bonnar’s third match-up against a European fighter (fourth if you include the back-to-back Krzysztof Soszynski fights). Bonnar tweeted about the upcoming UFC on Versus 5 tilt from his TrashTalkinKids account today:

“Who is karlos vermola? That’s ez, Bonnar’s next fight! Just released @Jon_anik and @ngaugeinc are the first 2 know. yeah dewd!!!”

We always appreciate Bonnar’s sense of humor and his inference that he doesn’t know who the f*@# Karlos Vemola is either. It’s good to see Bonnar’s have-fun-with-it attitude at this point in his career. I mean, what the hell, right? It’s a fight!
