UFC Fight Night 47 Results: Bader Decisions OSP in Snooze Fest, Pearson TKOs Maynard

Ryan Bader defeated Ovince St. Preux at UFC Fight Night 47. In the night’s co-main event, Ross Pearson knocked out Gray Maynard.

There were other fights on the card. Most of them were pretty good. Unfortunately, terrible pacing really KILLED the card. It felt like an eternity between each fight. The six-fight main card started at 10 pm and didn’t finish until after 1 am. Brutal.

Remember when the UFC said they’d “put the ‘Bang’ in Bangor?” They didn’t.

Fortunately for you, we recapped the main card so you don’t have to sit through hours of terrible Nos commercials. Enjoy!

The first fight on the main card featured Thiago Tavares’ one-round drubbing of Robbie Peralta. Tavares took him down almost immediately, stymied him with top control, and sunk in a rear-naked choke.

Shawn Jordan vs. Jack May was up next. Imagine a Bellator heavyweight fight but even more lackluster and that’s what this fight looked like. Thankfully, May gassed in the third round, which allowed Jordan to take him down and land a TKO win via ground and pound. Let’s just forget about this one and move on.

Alan Jouban and Seth Baczynski got the terrible taste out of our mouths. After a bit of inactivity in the beginning the two started scrapping wildly. A huge right hand from Jouban caught Baczynski on the chin and DROPPED him straight the canvas. It was the cleanest KO we’ve seen in a while.

The next fight ended with an equally awesome knockout. Tim Boetsch met Brad Tavares. Tavares picked Boetsch apart the entire first round. Boetsch’s face looked like it had been thrown into a wood chipper. But Boetsch ultimately managed to channel his comeback spirit in the second frame and land a shot to Tavares’ chin that dropped him. Tavares managed to scramble back to his feet, but was dropped a second time. The fight was called, and Boetsch’s hand was raised.

The string of KOs continued with Gray Maynard vs. Ross Pearson. In the first round, Maynard out-wrestled Pearson. There wasn’t a ton of other action to discuss. In the second, Pearson landed a hook that wobbled Maynard and sent him to the floor. Maynard turtled up while Pearson landed tons of ground and pound. The fight was over. One has to think Maynard’s career might be over.

Unfortunately, the main event was easily one of the worst fights in recent memory. Ryan Bader smothered an overmatched Ovince St.Preux for five rounds. We have nothing more to say about it because it was terrible.

Martial Arts Fail of the Week: Smear Shit on Yourself to Prevent Rape

Rape prevention is a serious topic and a noble endeavor but the guys in this video have pretty much no clue about it.

Many of the techniques are “street” techniques that simply assume someone is going to let you eye gouge them or hit them in the balls without doing anything–like they’ll just stand there and let you do it. To quote Daniel Cormier, “Do you think I’m just gonna sit there and let you kill me?”

Anyway, these guys are basically peddling martial arts snake oil–or snake excrement. That’s right, shitting and pissing yourself is among the techniques they advocate. They also suggest rubbing shit on your arms and on your face, a Martial Arts Fail of the Week first.

The knee-jerk reaction is “You know what? That’d probably work!” Well it might if you had the time to pull your pants down, shit into your hands, and then rub it on yourself. If somebody suddenly jumps you, it’s hard to do all that. You can shit yourself, though.

These guys also claim burping and farting are legit techniques.

Oh, and “these guys” are Lou Casamassa’s Red Dragon Karate (what an original name). Lou Casamassa is a 10th degree black belt in karate and the founder of the American Karate Kung Fu Federation. He claims to have used “Yankee ingenuity” to combine the 7 greatest martial arts into his Red Dragon Karate style. Ugh.

Funnily enough, his son–Chris Casamassa–was actually Scorpion in the first Mortal Kombat movie. You know what else he was in? WMAC MASTERS! His nickname was “Red Dragon,” no doubt an homage to his father’s style. Remember WMAC Masters?

A shame Casamassa didn’t smear shit all over himself on the show. That would’ve driven ratings through the fucking roof. The ENTIRE FIRST SEASON of the show is on YouTube. We highly suggest you watch it because it’s incredibly terrible–so terrible it’s great.

UFC Booking Alert: “The Korean Zombie” Returns to the Octagon Against Akira Corassani at UFC Fight Night 53

Chang Sung Jung is back! He’s been out of commission for over a year, but he’s finally just been booked for a fight. He’ll be facing Akira Corassani at UFC Fight Night 53 in Sweden. The card takes place on October 4th.

This will be the card’s co-main event.

Jung hasn’t fought since August 2013 at UFC 163. He lost to Jose Aldo in the fourth round via TKO–a fight in which “The Korean Zombie” dislocated his shoulder. The injury has sidelined him ever since. Before that fight, Jung had wowed audiences with a three-fight, three-finish winning streak over the likes of Leonard Garcia (when beating him still meant something), Mark Hominick, and Dustin Poirier. The fight against Corassani is an excellent chance for Jung to rebound (and maybe score another submission via twister).

Sweden’s Akira Corassani is also coming off a loss. Dustrin Poirier outworked and overpowered him at the TUF: Nations finale back in April. Corassani’s loss to Poirier snapped a three-fight winning streak (though one of those wins was due to Maximo Blanco disqualifying himself via an illegal knee, whatever).

Both fighters are currently 3-1 in the UFC. What a marketing angle that could be. “Somebody’s 3-1 has got to go!”

Seriously though, this is an interesting match that goes along with an equally interesting main event: Gunnar Nelson vs. Rick Story.

A Fight Night card with more than one match worth watching. What a treat!

And Now He’s Fired: Bellator Fires War Machine Over Domestic Abuse Allegations

Bellator has fired War Machine after a report from TMZ claimed he was involved in a domestic violence investigation.

TMZ’s report claimed the domestic dispute involved three people at War Machine’s Las Vegas home. Two people were reportedly injured so bad they had to go to the hospital. The report claimed one victim was War Machine’s “significant other.”

A tweet from Christy Mack, War Machine’s sort of girlfriend (the “it’s complicated” relationship status was made for them), seems to confirm the report:

Bellator has fired War Machine after a report from TMZ claimed he was involved in a domestic violence investigation.

While nothing is official yet, a domestic violence incident seems pretty likely. We hate to say this was inevitable, it seemed inevitable given War Machine’s sordid history.

Fortunately, Bellator under Scott Coker threw the book at War Machine.

“We have a zero tolerance policy here at Bellator when it relates to any form of domestic violence,” Bellator president Scott Coker said in a press release sent to CagePotato. “And after learning of this latest incident involving Jon Koppenhaver, War Machine, Bellator is releasing him from his promotional contract with the organization.”

This is a far cry from Bjorn Rebney’s terrible “Human beings make mistakes and sometimes say stupid things” stance that saw War Machine get away with anything.

War Machine has been arrested before, so who knows if and how long he’ll be incarcerated this time. His last fight was a loss to Ron Keslar at Bellator 104. To be honest, Bellator is better off without him.

Watch Art Jimmerson Knock A Fighter Through the Ropes (and Make a Guy Puke)

Art Jimmerson is arguably the most derided fighter in the history of MMA. This is understandable. The dude went into UFC 1 thinking he was going to collect some easy money by knocking out strip mall McDojo masters.

As we know, the reality was that Jimmerson was out of his depth in a no holds barred competition. And, of course, he fought Royce Gracie wearing only one glove, instantly guaranteeing himself a place in MMA’s hall of shame.

UFC co-creator Campbell McClaren recently dished on the one-glove issue on Darce Side Radio. It turns out “Big” John McCarthy had an exchange with Jimmerson before the fight. He explained what Royce Gracie would do to Jimmerson, as well as the horrifying fact that the referee wouldn’t separate the fighters in the case of a clinch. This was a fight, not a boxing match.

MMA Mania summed up McClaren’s story:

He’s going to have his arms on you. They’re not going to break that up. The ref doesn’t break that up in this fight.’ Jimmerson goes, ‘what?’ Big John said, “He’s going to shoot in. He’s going to grab you. You are going to get one chance to hit him, and if you miss, he’s going to be all over you.’ Jimmerson said, ‘He’s going to break my arm isn’t he?’ Big John said, ‘Yeah, he’s going to break your arm.’

“That’s when he decided to wear the one glove,” McLaren revealed. “To make sure we could see him tapping with the other hand. Walking with him to the Octagon, he said, ‘If I tap with my glove hand, is it a still a tap?’ That’s when I knew it wasn’t going to work out.”

This story, in conjunction with Art Davie revealing Jimmerson neglected to bring his shorts, gloves, and boxing shoes to the fight, make Jimmerson out to be a comic relief jobber. And to an extent, he was–at least in the UFC. He was a punching bag (or grappling dummy, in this case) for Royce Gracie. However, Jimmerson was also a professional fighter. We’ve been re-watching a lot of the old classics on UFC Fight Pass. As a result, we’ve developed a sense of protective nostalgia toward some fighters. We’re not going into full “LEAVE JIMMERSON ALONE” mode or anything like that. We’re just saying that Jimmerson wasn’t an entire sport’s joke once. Let’s just remember that.

Joe Riggs shot himself in the leg last week? In case you forgot, Riggs was cleaning his gun when it discharged. The gunshot wounded his hand and leg.

TMZ just released pictures of Riggs’ wounded leg, and they’re brutal. We’d make a “that’s even worse than Marvin Eastman’s cut!” joke but this is a pretty serious matter. CagePotato doesn’t like to joke and ball-bust about life threatening things.

Nasty. The accident couldn’t have come at a worse time for Riggs. The UFC signed the 31-year-old after he won Bellator’s “Fight Master” reality show. They booked him to face Paulo Thaigo at UFC Fight Night 51, but that obviously won’t happen now. We wish Joe Riggs the best in his recovery.
