Perhaps the most important fight in an MMA fighter’s career, the UFC debut can leave many fraught with nerves.

While many fighters take a few fights to get their groove, some burst on to the scene and immediately cause the fans to take notice.

We’ve compiled the 10 best and most dramatic UFC debuts in the history of the promotion. Check them out here:

10. Houston Alexander vs. Keith Jardine

After Keith Jardine sparked Forrest Griffin, not a lot of fighters were willing to take on “The Dean of Mean” on short notice. Then came Houston Alexander.

The year was 2007, and then-champion Chuck Liddell was set to defend his light heavyweight belt in a rematch against “Rampage” Jackson at UFC 71. On the main card, Jardine was in need of an opponent, and the UFC was having difficulty putting a fight together.

Enter little-known Houston Alexander, a ripped but otherwise unassuming 6-1 fighter. While Jardine did drop “The Assassin” seconds into the first round, Alexander fired back with brutal intensity.

Uppercuts, knees, clubbing overhand rights. Everything Alexander through seemed to connect. The fight was more of a mugging or an assault than a mixed martial arts bout.

The fight was mercilessly stopped just 47 seconds into round one. While entering the fight a sizable underdog, “The Assassin’s” UFC debut was without a doubt a memorable one.

Although his career didn’t exactly live up to the expectations based off of his explosive debut, Houston Alexander took a short-notice fight against a top 10 fighter and shocked the world with a huge victory.

Heading into his Bellator debut at tomorrow’s Bellator NYC, Aaron Pico is only 20 years old, and yet he’s accomplished so much.

With a background in both wrestling and boxing, Pico is a physically gifted athlete. He’s won multiple championships in freestyle wrestling, and came one point shy of making the US Olympic team in 2016 at the age of 19. In boxing, he’s won a Golden Gloves junior national championship, and trains out of the famed Wildcard Gym in Los Angeles, California.

Three years ago, Pico signed a deal with Bellator MMA, and this weekend (June 24, 2017), he’ll make not only his promotional debut, but his professional debut. He’ll do so against veteran Zach Freeman in the main card opener of Bellator’s pay-per-view event at the iconic Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Unsurprisingly, Pico, who some have dubbed as a prodigy of sorts, has garnered quite a bit of attention ahead of the event, and he’s deservingly stood out as a fighter to watch. The interesting thing to note, however, is that the hype surrounding him, which is quite evident, is very unique.

In today’s MMA landscape, it seems as if the more outspoken and the more vocal a fighter is, the more attention he receives. For example, take a look at Bellator NYC headliner Chael Sonnen. Sure, Sonnen is a talented fighter and a veteran of the fight game, but he became one of the biggest stars in the sport years ago due to his ability to work a microphone and sell a fight.

UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor represents another example of this theory. Now to give him credit, the Irishman typically backs up his words inside the Octagon, but his meteoric rise to the top of MMA was based primarily off of his trash talking skills and brash personality.

Pico, however, doesn’t fit this mold – at least not yet. The hype surrounding him isn’t due to any sort of trash talk, or any sort of self-promotion he’s attempted to do.

That isn’t to see he’s not confident, however.

In fact, told MMAFighting.com’s Ariel Helwani that he’s the ‘shot caller’:

“I am the shot caller for sure, but I’ve earned that,” Pico said. Come with me and see what I do everyday, and what I’ve been doing since I was four years old. The work is paying off, finally.”

At such a young age, it’s tough to predict where Pico’s career will take him. Perhaps one day he’ll turn into that type of outspoken star that we seem to see all over MMA these days.

At this point, however, he appears to be nothing more than a young fighter garnering interest due to a lifetime of hard work and accomplishments. This is where his hype truly stems from and in my opinion, he represents a breath of fresh air.

In the end, the hype surrounding Pico is undoubtedly deserved, but it’s also different. Let’s see if he lives up to it on Saturday night and beyond.

Scott Coker: Douglas Lima Is The Best Welterweight In The World

If you think UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley is the best in the world, then you are wrong, according to Bellator MMA President Scott Coker, who believes that the 170-pound division has another undisputed king across the board. If you think UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley is the best in the world, then you are wrong, according to Bellator MMA President Scott Coker, who believes that the 170-pound division has another undisputed king across the board.

Coker is talking about current Bellator welterweight champion Douglas Lima. Well, Coker is putting Lima in a tough spot this weekend at Bellator NYC as he is set to defend his title against former UFC prospect Lorenz Larkin on the main card of the pay-per-view event. This will not be an easy task for Lima.

Lima is not someone to doubt as he has only lost twice under the Bellator banner since making his debut in 2011. His most recent loss was a title-costing one to Andrey Koreshkov. Lima has racked up 28 career wins.

What is impressive by that number is that 24 of those wins came by either KO or submission. On the flip side, Larkin is coming off wins over contenders Neil Magny and Jorge Masvidal.

“Douglas Lima is a killer,” Coker said in a promotional video leading up to Saturday’s Bellator NYC. “I’ll say here, he is the best welterweight in the world right now.”

Obviously, you can make the case that Coker is a little biased, but by looking at Lima’s record, the claims are not completely without merit.

Bellator NYC: Sonnen vs. Silva is scheduled to take place on Saturday, June 24, 2017, at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The promotion has decided to call the PPV portion of the event Bellator NYC while the preliminary portion of the event will be titled Bellator 180.

The prelims will air on Bellator.com at 6 p.m. ET while the Bellator 180 main card will air on Spike at 8 p.m. ET with four bouts. The Bellator NYC card will air on PPV at 10 p.m. ET with five bouts.

Online scalpers are selling fake Mayweather tickets and clueless McGregor fans are buying them

Tickets for the Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor boxing match have not gone on sale yet, so please stop buying them.

That’s according to UFC President Dana White, who is warning combat sports fans to stay away from online scalpers who are making a pretty penny on clueless fans trying to reserve seats for T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Sat., Aug. 26, 2017.

From Instagram:

“A fan told me he bought tix already. I want ALL fans to know that we have not even come up with a price for tix yet and tix ARE NOT for sale yet. Don’t get fucked by These DIRTBALLS trying to sell tix already. When we announce tix on sale that’s when it’s real.”

They won’t be cheap (neither will this).

What’s being dubbed “The Money Fight” came to fruition after months of negotiations and is expected to be one of the most hyped events of the decade. Whether or not that translates into a competitive fight remains to be seen.

Here’s what the oddsmakers think.

That Time Kevin Lee Brought Up Michael Chiesa’s Mom and Started a Brawl

The moms.

Oh, buddy, you better not go after the moms.

There might be nothing in the world that will rile a guy up quicker than a comment about their mom, and that very much played itself out at the UFC’s Summer Kickoff press conference back in May.

Sure, it didn’t happen that long ago, but it was so iconic as the type of absurdity so often seen in MMA that it warrants recapping given Kevin Lee and Michael Chiesa will settle their score this weekend.

It all starts pretty casually, with Lee wearing a comically overwrought shirt—wide open, of course—and bandana. In something of a starmaking turn, he’s taking digs at Chiesa while talking up the fight and his newfound place as a main eventer.

Relatively harmlessly, it first appears, Lee makes the comment, “I know his momma got tickets,” and seems ready to go on sassing his future opponent. He doesn’t get the chance, though.

Chiesa, not exactly known as a wild firebrand full of explosive outbursts, leaps from his seat and shouts: “You shut the f–k up about my mom!”

What ensues is the two men shouting over one another briefly, with Chiesa pointing and repeating variations of “don’t you ever talk about my mom” before he finally decides to take action. He declares his intention to “slap the f–k out of” Lee and storms across the dais to do just that.

The other athletes on stage range from horrified to cheerleading as the two lightweights meet in the aisle amid a horde of UFC security, who fail miserably at their job of breaking up the brawl when Chiesa eats a big overhand right. Things are eventually put to a halt after that.

Some people loved it, others thought it was the type of trashy silliness better suited to a Jerry Springer episode, but it undeniably got people talking about a pretty exciting fight that was otherwise likely to fly under the radar during the UFC’s busy season.

Check out the whole fiasco below (NOTE: video contains NSFW language), and tune in Sunday night on Fox Sports 1 to see who has the last laugh.
