Conor McGregor still feels that the odds were stacked against him over a month out from his tenth round TKO boxing defeat to Floyd Mayweather in August.

While the task of beating Mayweather was already a tall order, McGregor says the presence of Robert Byrd, who is the husband of Adalaide Byrd, the now-suspended boxing judge from Golovkin vs GGG, kept him from getting “a fair shake”.

During his first major media appearance since his boxing match with Mayweather, McGregor told Caroline Pearce at “An Evening With Conor McGregor” in Glasgow (via MMA Fighting) that he was only recently made aware of the connection between the two, which just furthers his idea of how boxing politics interloped the fight:

“Adalaide Byrd’s husband Robert Byrd, that’s all I’ll say on that. That’s her husband.

“When we came face to face and we were doing the rules thing, he was only staring at me. I’m looking at him staring at me and I could see in my peripheral vision that he was looking at me and not looking at Floyd,” he said.

“I was going to say, ‘He’s fighting as well, mate. Give him the f**king rules. I don’t know, what was going on there?

“Every time we tied he literally wrestled me off him. It is what it is, I knew I wasn’t going to get a fair shake out there.”

McGregor is expected to return to the UFC following his stint in boxing and defend his lightweight title. Meanwhile, Tony Ferguson and Kevin Lee will throw down for the interim 155 pound belt in his absence, the winner of which is widely expected to fight McGregor sometime next year.

McGregor insists that the fight was stopped to early, as he was still on his feet when Robert Byrd intervened.

“I thought it was an early stoppage. How the f**k can you stop a fight if there were no knockdowns or nothing previous?” he asked.

“The round before that I almost had him dropped. I hurt him to the body in the round before. How the f**k can you stop it like that at the first sign of a wobble? You’ve got to let these fights go on.”

McGregor won the first several rounds against the boxing legend before eventually succumbing to punches and exhaustion in the later rounds before being stopped in round ten.

Mario Lopez is best known for his successful career as a Hollywood actor, but he also happens to be an avid combat sports fan and the host of a boxing podcast.

With that being said, Lopez was in attendance for last weekend’s (Sept. 16, 2017) middleweight title clash between Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin.

Like many, Lopez enjoyed the fight, although he wasn’t pleased with the decision. Many had felt as if Golovkin had done enough to be named the winner, although the judges ruled it a split-draw:

“This fight was a great fight,” Lopez told Ariel Helwani on Monday’s episode of The MMA Hour. “I think it delivered on its promises: It got intense, it got heated. It’s hard to root against either fighter, I happen to know both fighters — I’ve actually sparred with both fighters — and I know them well and they’re gentlemen outside of the ring. They’re class acts, they’re really cool, but I felt like the nod should’ve maybe gone to Gennady.

“When it was all said and done, he initiated most of the action, he let his hands go through more, he had the constant pressure. And although Canelo showed resilience, a stout set of whiskers, he looked comfortable at middleweight, he countered, I just felt like fighting in 30 second spurts wasn’t enough.”

To make matters worse, judge Adalaide Byrd scored the bout 118-110 for “Canelo”, a score that Lopez labeled as ‘criminal’:

“You should never know a judge’s name, and whenever the judge is starting to get more (publicity) and it’s overshadowing a really good fight between two of the best boxers in the world, that’s just such a stain on the evening,” Lopez explained.

“She literary gave ‘GGG’ two rounds of the fight. That was criminal. She should’ve been arrested. It looks like a predetermined scorecard from the get. And the irony was that there was a lot of buzz that she should’ve not been involved from the get. She’s judged hundreds of these before and she’s been met with controversy before, so it was unfortunate. The other two judges had it a little more in line.”

Ultimately, Lopez acknowledged how close the bout was, concluding that it wasn’t the worst decision he’s ever seen:

“It was very, very close,” Lopez said. “It’s not the worst decision in the world and I’m not incredibly upset about the draw, a rematch would’ve been warranted regardless if Gennady would have gotten the nod. I think regardless they could’ve done it again and everyone wins.”

The two camps have supposedly begun discussions regarding a potential rematch, which could take place in May 2018.

Scorned GGG vs. Canelo Judge Could Still Score UFC 216

Frequently known to produce head-scratching scorecards in big fights, Las Vegas judge Adalaide Byrd saw her critics rise to a never-before-seen level when she scored last Saturday’s massive GGG vs. Canelo Alvarez an astounding 118-110 for Alvarez in a bout many felt Golovkin had won, resulting in a jaw-dropping draw overall.

After the disappointing result in a fight most boxing purists felt was supposed to re-establish the legitimacy of their sport following the Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor spectacle of last month, the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) voiced their continued support for Byrd, whose judging saw her as the sole disagreeing score in six split decisions in MMA last year according to MMA Decisions.

But now, they could be waffling on that support – or something. NSAC executive director Bob Bennett told MMA Fighting this week that he would speak with chairman Anthony Marnell, and together they would decideByrd’s fate for the upcoming UFC 216 pay-per-view on October 7 from Las Vegas:

“I will speak with the chairman (Anthony Marnell III) and Adalaide and we will decide in a week or so.”

Joe Camporeale for USA TODAY SportsC

That was a bit of a departure from Bennett’s previous assessment of the situation, however, as he previously told The Independent that he would give Byrd ‘a break’ as she needed to ‘catch her breath’:

“I’m not going to put her right back in. She’ll still be in the business, but she needs to catch her breath.

“Like in any profession, you have a bad night. Unfortunately, she didn’t do well. I can tell you she conducts training for us, takes judges under her wing, but her score was too wide.”

Indeed the 118-110 score was ‘too wide,’ with a massive windfall of criticism befalling both Byrd and the NSAC for employing her, with some even going as far as to suggest widespread corruption in the grossly uneven draw, where judge Dave Moretti had it 115-113 in favor of Golovkin, and Don Trella scored it an even 114-114.

UFC 216 will feature two title fights when Tony Ferguson meets rising Kevin Lee for the interim lightweight title in the main event while Demetrious Johnson attempts to set the all-time record for consecutive UFC title defenses versus Ray Borg in the co-main event. Needless to say, those are two fights that could certainly do without the inconsistency of Byrd’s judging.

For her part, Byrd absolutely refused to address the situation to MMA Fighting, stating she was oblivious to the criticism so therefore could not comment in a laughable bit of deflection:

“I don’t know anything about that. That’s really all I can say.

“I can’t comment on anything, because I haven’t seen or read anything at all,” Byrd said. “I can’t comment, because I don’t even know what people are saying.”

If she truly does not know what people are saying about her farce of a score for boxing’s most hotly contested bout of 2017, then perhaps the NSAC should take some responsibility for once and give her the break Bennett previously discussed.

After all, it’s just not worth putting fighters’ livelihoods on the line in a sport where the hurt each other for money, especially in a city like Las Vegas where capable judges would seem to be readily available. What do you think? Should Byrd be put on temporary hiatus, or should she simply be let go outright?

With GGG vs Canelo Alvarez in the books as a draw, the highly anticipated bout ended in controversial albeit exciting fashion.

Just weeks after Mayweather vs McGregor, Golovkin vs. Alvarez was largely considered to be the real boxing superfight of 2017 by boxing purists. But after 12 back-and-forth rounds, the two champions fought to a draw, and not without some controversy.

One judge, Adalaide Byrd, actually scored the fight 118-110 in Alvarez’s favor, much to the surprise of fans and pundits alike. Most fans argued that GGG had done enough to win the fight, having kept Canelo on the back foot with his trademark constant pressure.

While both men certainly had their moments, Golovkin appeared to land the harder shots, and really began turning the tides in round five.

Check out the official scorecards for yourself! Do you agree with the judges on this one? Or was Golovkin robbed of a career-defining victory?
