Andre Berto says that Claressa Shields is not getting the credit she deserves for her highly impressive career in boxing. “GWOAT” Claressa Shields represented the USA in the Olympics and has since collected numerous titles across multiple weight classes.

Claressa Shields

The US-born Claressa Shields earned two Olympic Gold Medals as an amateur fighter. Since turning pro, Shields has remained unbeaten in her spotless 15-0 fight career. Along the way, she has earned WBA, WBC, IBF, WBO, and The Ring titles across multiple weight classes. Additionally, she competes in MMA with the PFL. Most recently, “GWOAT” Claressa Shields captured the heavyweight title by way of knockout.

Former Olympian, world champion, and Hall of Fame boxer Andre Berto said that Shields is not getting the respect that she deserves. Speaking in an interview on All The Smoke, he said:

“Somebody like that has been that dominant for so long, two gold medals, multiple world titles, undefeated, just accolades after accolades. I believe that she continues to feel like she has to do more and more and more to continue to try to gain any type of real respect. If it’s boxing, if it’s MMA, if it’s doing rap videos, if it’s YouTube. But she’s trying to deliver you know, to a different type of hype because she feels like she needs to,. But she’s still not getting that type of love, notoriety, or sponsors.

“You got a woman that’s so dominant and has been collecting everything. What else does she need to do to get those real dollars? Those real fight dollars, those real endorsement dollars. Cause, like I said, I see her working overtime. Everybody’s been seeing her working overtime.”

Not only does Claressa Shields not get the respect she deserves, as someone with so many impressive accolades, but she is also actively disrespected, Berto explained. An Olympic medalist and multi-division world champion in boxing, people should be celebrating her as they are witnessing history.

Last year when I spoke to Shields, she broke down exactly where she keeps all of her impressive titles. Because it’s not easy to store so many gold belts and medals.

Berto Continued:

“I know these platforms give people a voice that otherwise wouldn’t have one. And a lot of times people say whatever they want to say, but what is all that? The hate and vitriol that’s coming at Claressa Shields. Where is this coming from? My heart for her, man, is just to rest in her greatness. Resting on what she’s accomplished and finishing her career out strong. Get as many bags as she can. Maintain her integrity in the process and, try to leave this thing undefeated.

“I’m not standing for the blatant disrespect of this young lady from these grown men. It’s ridiculous.

While a high-level mixed martial artist in Conor McGregor comes off his unsuccessful professional boxing debut this past weekend (Sat. August 26, 2017) against Floyd Mayweather, a high-level boxer is left contemplating a possible venture into the world of mixed martial arts (MMA).

Ex-WBC welterweight title holder Andre Berto spoke to TMZ following the Mayweather vs. McGregor fight and was asked if he wanted to call out any MMA fighters to throw down inside the Octagon. Berto responded by saying he wants ‘all of ’em’ and went as far as asking UFC President Dana White for a contract with the promotion (quotes via Bloody Elbow):

“I want all of ‘em!” Berto said. “Dana White, you know me, you know my family’s been in MMA for a while, I’m coming to the UFC so Dana White, call me! Tell Dana to call me. I’ll go to the UFC.

“I wanna be the first fighter ever to be a world champion in boxing and go get a UFC world title. It’s never been done. That’s never been done. Tell Dana to holler at me!”

While he won’t be the first world boxing champion to go and win a UFC title (see Holly Holm), Berto’s bloodline is no stranger to the world of MMA competition. His father, Dieuseul Berto, competed at UFC 10 back in 1996. His brother, James Edson, also used to compete in MMA and fought under the banners of promotions such as Strikeforce, EliteXC, and Bellator MMA with a record of 17-12-1. Berto’s sister, Revelina, failed to make it onto The Ultimate Fighter season 18 when she was eliminated in the entry round.

Berto, 33, hasn’t competed in boxing since this past April when he was finished in the ninth round by Shawn Porter via TKO. Berto is 4-5 in his last nine fights and seems to be winding down in his boxing career, perhaps getting ready to gear up for a switch over to MMA.

Boxer Andre Berto has made a plea to UFC president Dana White to get in touch with him about a potential crossover to MMA.

Berto, who fought Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2015, made it clear to TMZ he feels he has what’s needed to become a world champion in both combat sports:

“Tell Dana to call me,” he said. “I’ll go to the UFC. I wanna be the first fighter ever to be a world champion in boxing and then go get a world title.”

Talk of fighters potentially trading disciplines is likely to be a hot topic moving forward after Mayweather took on UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor on Saturday in a boxing bout.

American boxer Andre Berto believes Conor McGregor can defeat Floyd Mayweather Jr. when the pair clash on Aug. 26 in Las Vegas at the T-Mobile Arena.

According to Marc Raimondi of MMA Fighting, Berto, who went 12 rounds with Mayweather in 2015 before losing via unanimous decision, said McGregor is a special talent and can find a way to beat his legendary opponent:

When it comes to Conor, I tell people: He’s a star. For some reason under that pressure and under those lights and under that atmosphere, he knows how to rise to the occasion. It doesn’t matter what the situation is, he’s one of those special guys that really can thrive in these types of environments, man.

I just don’t put too much past him. I’ve been able to see and able to go to a few of this fights and really see how he really soaks up that atmosphere and he gets energy from it, where a lot of people really break down or it allows them to fold. He gets energy from that and he knows how to thrive. If it was a guy in the UFC or MMA that can do it, I believe he would be the one, for sure.”

Berto added that McGregor could win by knockout if Mayweather feels the Irishman’s full power, but the 33-year-old refused to predict a definitive winner for the Las Vegas clash, per Raimondi. Berto and McGregor are friends, but the  former two-time WBC welterweight champion also said Mayweather could “pick Conor apart” if he sticks to his usual tactics in the ring.
