A proven ability to finish fights is undoubtedly one of the most desirable attributes any fighter could ever wish to possess to become a success in mixed martial arts (MMA).

Whether it’s by knockout or submission, fans want to see fights being finished, and so fighters who repeatedly demonstrate that killer instinct in the cage can quickly become valuable assets to a major organization like the UFC, and are more likely to become stars than their counterparts who leave their fate in the hands of the judges.

In this article we’ll seek to establish who the best of all-time are at finishing fights in the UFC, but before we begin, let’s quickly explain the methodology behind our rankings. First up, to provide somewhat of an even playing field we’re only taking into consideration fights that took place in the UFC, since some fighters records are padded out with finishes against low-level competition on the regional circuit.

The most important criteria is simply the number of finishes the fighter has aquired in the Octagon, but if there’s a tie, then we’ll separate them by comparing the number of finishes they have to their overall winning record in the UFC. If there’s still a deadlock, then we’ll move on to establishing who finishes their fights the quickest.

With that in mind, honorable mentions go out to four fan favorites: Randy Couture, Andrei Arlovski, Nate Diaz and Matt Brown, who all have 11 finishes on their records and only narrowly missed out on a spot in the Top 10 based on our criteria.

Rumble Breaks Down Sad State Of UFC Light Heavyweight Division

The UFC’s 205-pound division was once one of its most storied, with legendary fighters like Chuck Liddell and Randy Couture paving the way for names like Rashad Evans and Lyoto Machida before Jon Jones came along and went on perhaps the most historic two-year run in the history of MMA, ruling the division with an iron fist for four years until his own personal problems derailed his reign.

Now, however, the division is arguably the most stagnant in the UFC, with Jones suspended by USADA and still on probation for hitting a 25-year-old pregnant Albuquerque woman two years ago, while oft-injured current champion Daniel Cormier has made one official title defense since winning the belt against Anthony ‘Rumble’ Johnson at 2015’s UFC 187.

Cormier will face Johnson once again in the main event of April 8’s UFC 210 after a knee injury to ‘DC’ forced him out of their original rematch at last December’s UFC 206, but beyond that high-profile bout, ‘Rumble’ admitted while speaking with MMA Junkie at last weekend’s Daytona 500 that there isn’t much excitement left in the top levels of 205 pounds:

“There’s nobody on top, but me and Daniel. The others are doing their thing.”

The only other relatively big match scheduled for the division is May’s Alexander Gustafsson vs. Glover Teixeira main event at UFC Sweden; both fighters ‘Rumble’ has knocked out in destructive fashion. Beyond that, UFC ownership has appeared painfully stubborn in allowing the division to fade away, evident by their letting top prospects Misha Cirkunov and Nikita Krylov walk when their contracts expired.

The same may be true for perennial contender Ryan Bader, who has been rumored to be heading for the supposedly greener pastures of Bellator with his contract also expired. ‘Rumble’ stopped Bader in only a minute and 26 seconds in early 2016, and he doesn’t think the long-tenured ‘Darth’ will be able to contend with him or Cormier if he decides to stay in the octagon:

“Bader is just irrelevant. He won’t be able to compete with any of us in the top 2 or 3. He just can’t beat us. Period. I’m not taking his talents for granted, but you saw what happened with me. I beat him in what, a minute? Daniel would have taken a little bit longer, but he would have beat him, too.”

As for his current foil in Cormier, ‘Rumble’ has a little more respect after ‘DC’ took his best shot and closed the distance to smother him with a relentless barrage of takedowns and ground strikes in their first meeting. He’s expecting the same hard-charging champion this time around, and is looking forward to a chance at redeeming the loss:

“I expect everything out of Daniel. I expect him to come out fast, hard and aggressive. I’m looking forward to it. I don’t take anything for granted when it comes to Daniel.”

But even with that respect, Johnson is intent on proving he’s the best 205-pound fighter in an extremely shallow talent pool, offering up a blunt yet concise prediction for his rematch with Cormier:

“I’m going to whoop his ass. That’s the prediction.”

Daniel Cormier: Anthony Johnson’s Fall Will Mimic Mike Tyson’s

Daniel Cormier is prepared to stand-and-bang with Anthony Johnson.

‘DC’ will be defending his light heavyweight title against No. 1-ranked contender ‘Rumble’ Johnson in the main event of UFC 210 from Buffalo, New York on April 8th. The pair initially met at UFC 187 for the then-vacant 205-pound title, in which Cormier ate some heavy shots from Johnson before taking the Blackzillian’s back and submitting him via rear-naked choke.

Despite that Cormier was sent flying across the Octagon at one point in the contest from one of Johnson’s strikes, Cormier has vowed to stand in the pocket and trade with the knockout artist. ‘DC’ joined The MMA Hour earlier today (Mon. February 6, 2017) to discuss the match-up, and claims that come fight night he’ll continue to press forward on the hard-swinging title challenger (quotes via MMA Mania):

“Before we fought he said, ‘I can knock him out when I decide to knock him out.’ He said, ‘Daniel knows what’s coming to him, I’m going to knock him out.’ Well what happens when you don’t knock me out? What happens if you hit me with your best shot and I continue to press forward and I continue to engage you and stay in your face the entire time? What happens then?

“You saw what happened; he rolled over, gave me his neck and let me choke him out so he can get out of the Octagon. People can believe everything they want. I love Mike Tyson, I was a fan just like everyone else, but the moment someone stood up to him, he didn’t do so well. And that’s the same thing with Anthony Johnson, the guy is a bully who wants to intimidate you. Dominate you and knock you out. But what happens, when you don’t knock somebody out? What happens?”

After having their first rematch fall out from UFC 206 last year due to Cormier tearing a adductor tendon, the pair of top 205-pounders will get their opportunity to throw down yet again this April. How do you see the rematch between Cormier and Johnson going?
