On Thursday, UFC announced one of the main events scheduled for their upcoming UFC On FOX 20 event.

As noted, Holly Holm is expected to fight in the actual main event of the show, however the fan-favorite main event will likely be the fight that was announced today.

In a striking fans dream match, top-ranked UFC Light Heavyweight contenders Anthony “Rumble” Johnson and Glover Teixeira will meet inside the Octagon live on “big FOX.”

UFC On FOX 20 is scheduled for July 23, 2016.

A matchup of light heavyweight bangers is set for UFC on FOX 20, as Anthony Johnson and Glover Teixeira meet in a No. 1 contender match.

The bout, first reported by “UFC Tonight,” would serve as the co-main event to Holly Holm vs. Valentina Shevchenko.

Johnson (21-5) was rumored as a possible replacement for Daniel Cormier last month to meet Jon Jones for the interim light heavyweight title, but surgery kept “Rumble” from taking the contest.

After losing to Cormier for the vacant belt last year, “Rumble” has reeled off back-to-back knockouts of Ryan Bader and Jimi Manuwa.

Teixeira (25-4) is on a three-fight finish streak of his own, including an April knockout of former UFC champion Rashad Evans. The Brazilian has also bested Patrick Cummins and Ovince Saint Preux since back-to-back 2014 decision losses to Phil Davis and Jones.

UFC on FOX 20 takes place July 23 from Chicago.

Dana White Likes Teixeira vs. Johnson, But “Rumble” Doesn’t Dance

Glover Teixeira knocked out former champion Rashad Evans in brutal fashion just 1:48 into round one at last night’s (Sat. April 16, 2016) UFC on FOX 19 headliner at the Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida.

Teixeira dropped “Suga” with a brutal left hand along the fence, then put the nail in the coffin with a pulverizing right. Evans slumped face-first to the mat, finished for just the second time in his storied career. In the aftermath, the Brazilian took to the mic to call out fellow knockout artist Anthony “Rumble” Johnson:

“‘Rumble’ Johnson, you know, he’s waiting around for Jones and Cormier. So, you know, he don’t want to wait around. Let’s dance, baby! Let’s make some money!”

With his third straight finish since dropping back-to-back decisions to Jon Jones and Phil Davis, Teixeira is taking aim at the top of the division.

Many believe “Rumble” earned his second bid for UFC gold by dismantling Ryan Bader in the headliner of the last UFC on FOX show back in January. Johnson’s lone misstep since returning to the UFC in April 2014 was succumbing to a third round rear-naked choke from Daniel Cormier in a battle for the vacant light heavyweight strap at May 2015’s UFC 187.

His five other fights have resulted in four knockouts and a dominant decision over the aforementioned Davis. With next week’s previously scheduled unification bout between Jones and Cormier at UFC 197 on hold for now, Johnson may have to wait for another crack at a championship.

Should he choose to stay busy, perhaps a bout with the brick-fisted Teixeira would make sense. The man in Teixeira’s crosshairs did not remain silent on the subject, replying to the callout with the response that he doesn’t dance:

Dana White likes the idea as well. The UFC president had this to say to FOX’s Heidi Androl when asked about the current state of the 205-pound division:

“We do have a situation. It’s all about timing. It’s funny, when he called him out, I went, ‘Ooh, I like that fight!’ That’s a fun fight. Glover looked awesome tonight. Rashad Evans is always a dangerous guy. You know, Rashad has speed in his hands, he has knockout power himself, and he got caught. And you know, you know I don’t make fights after fights, but I gotta be honest: when he called him out, I like that fight.”

Ovince St. Preux will fight Jon Jones in the main event of UFC 197 after Jones’ original opponent, Daniel Cormier, pulled out of the fight. This fight will serve as the main event of UFC 197 and will be for the interim light heavyweight title.

UFC President Dana White has already said that former title contender Anthony Johnson was the fighter that the promotion wanted to have as Jones’ opponent at the event.

Jones recently appeared on The MMA Hour and explained that he almost accepted a fight with Johnson at the event.

“Originally, the UFC called me and asked about Anthony Johnson,” Jones said. “They said that he had already accepted the fight, and they asked me if I was going to accept the fight. I told them I needed a meeting with my coaches. I had a meeting with my coaches, and the next morning I called the UFC said let’s do this thing. They said that Anthony’s camp changed their mind, I guess since he had some dental work he needed to do.

Johnson took to Instagram to refute what Jones had to say and explained that he never accepted a fight with Jones at the event. He posted this:

“Everybody’s hitting me up now, all of my friends, saying that Jon is throwing me under the bus or whatever. I never accepted the fight with Jon. The UFC hit me up and asked me about it, but they didn’t know anything about that I had dental work done. I had four screws put in my jaw, okay? So why would I accept a fight and then say, ‘No, I don’t want to fight him?’ That’s stupid. I have more sense than that. So, either the UFC is telling this man the wrong thing, or somebody’s not telling the truth somewhere in between. Because I got told something different and now I’m hearing Jon is being told this. So, I don’t know. I never said okay to the fight. I never said, ‘Yeah.’ So, I just want to let you guys know what the deal was, and hopefully we get to the bottom of it because something’s not right. Him being told that I accepted the fight, and I never said it. Like I said, I heard something totally different as far as coming from his camp. I heard other things. It is what it is”

Video: Anthony Johnson Explains Not Taking Fight Against Jon Jones At UFC 197

After hearing a lot of feedback where he has taken some heat from MMA fans, UFC Light Heavyweight contender Anthony “Rumble” Johnson took to social media this week to explain why he didn’t take the short-notice offer to fight Jon Jones in the UFC 197 main event.

As noted, when Daniel Cormier pulled out of the originally scheduled UFC 197 main event against Jones, the belief was UFC would scramble to put together Jones-Johnson as a replacement main event.

It was reported, however, that Johnson turned down the fight claiming he needed to do some dental work. Johnson posted a series of videos on Instagram, which you can watch below, explaining the real story.

Headlined by Jon Jones vs. Ovince St. Preux for the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship, UFC 197 takes place on April 23, 2016 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

“Okay, everybody’s hitting me up now, all of my friends, saying that Jon is throwing me under the bus or whatever,” Johnson said. “I never accepted the fight with Jon. The UFC hit me up and asked me about it, but they didn’t know anything about that I had dental work done. I had four screws put in my jaw, okay? So, I don’t know, but it is what it is.

“And I know my teammate Kamaru said I was ready, but he didn’t know I had, you know, dental work done. He didn’t know I had four screws put in my jaw at the time he did that interview because he hadn’t seen me, but like maybe twice in the gym, so he was just showing love and support whenever he said I would be ready. He’s not supposed to say my teammate hasn’t been in the gym, he hasn’t been doing anything. No teammate would say that to another teammate if you respect that person. I hope nobody gets it twisted and like I said, it is what it is.

“And I’m only doing these videos because I owe it to the fans, I owe it to everybody, so they can know besides reading and hearing sh*t from other people. You’re hearing it from me. I never said ‘okay’ to the fight. I never said, ‘Yeah.’ So, I just want to let you guys know what the deal was and hopefully we get to the bottom of it because something’s not right. Him being told that I accepted the fight and I never said it. Like I said, I heard something totally different as far as coming from his camp. I heard other things.
