WWE Wrestler CM Punk May Not Approve of Jon Jones’ Nike Deal

(This is how a real Christian does product endorsement)

So we know that the first thing you thought when you heard that UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones has signed a ground breaking global sponsorship deal with Nike was, “gee, I wonder what professional wrestler and Chael Sonnen bff CM Punk thinks about all of this?” Well, turns out that the straight-edge character actor/athlete may not be such a big fan of Nike’s decision.

On August 8th, CM Punk tweeted, “Let’s reward more drunk drivers with endorsement deals! #responsibility” he tweeted. Now, this is only circumstantial, but the timing of the tweet, along with Mr. Punk’s own fanboy-ness with the sport of MMA makes us think that he was referring to Jones and his new Nike deal.

You see, shortly after his last title defense last spring, Jones was arrested for an alleged DWI after crashing his Bentley into a tree. He’s currently still dealing with that legal situation.

So, Jones appears to have messed up and yet he continues to make a living. Perhaps C to the M cannot abide that injustice.

After all, he and his character in the WWE advocate a straight-edge lifestyle that does not include drinking or drugs. Its a good thing that Punk’s friend Sonnen wasn’t drinking when he was laundering money and snitching on other criminals because then the WWE star may have had a problem with Sonnen trying to move beyond his mistakes and continue to make money for his family.

What do you think, nation? Is CM Punk just being a hater here or does he have a legitimate point and I’m just grumpy because I’m writing about what a guy who pretends to fight has to say about a guy who actually fights on a Friday afternoon?

CM Punk: Did the Straight-Edge Superstar Just Take a Shot at Jon Jones?

Despite the fact that both the UFC and WWE have stated numerous times that they aren’t in competition with one another, it seems like there is at least one piece of news a week that links the two together.

This time, it’s WWE champion CM Punk seemingly taking at shot at UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones’ new endorsement deal with Nike via Twitter.

While we cant confirm CM Punk was referring to Jones specifically in his tweet, Jones is the only high-profile athlete that both recently got a DWI and major endorsement deal.

This tweet is interesting for a number of reasons.

Punk has been one of the most vocal MMA supporters in the wrestling world over the last few years, doing several interviews with MMA journalist Ariel Helwani and filming Gracie ju-jitsu breakdowns for the legendary family’s YouTube channel.

At one point, he was even going to accompany Chael Sonnen to the cage for Sonnen’s UFC on Fox 2 fight in Punk’s hometown of Chicago, but it was ultimately shut down by Vince McMahon.

So while it may look odd that Punk would call out an athlete from a sport that he clearly loves and supports, when you look at Jones’ recent DWI charge, it becomes a lot easier to see where the WWE champion’s problem lies.

Punk’s TV persona promotes a straight-edge life style (meaning that he doesn’t do any drugs, drink alcohol or smoke cigarettes), and that attitude doesn’t change when the cameras come off.

Over the years, Punk has made it clear that his straight-edge persona is not an act, and he’s lived by that lifestyle off camera longer than he has on it.

If this tweet is indeed about the UFC champion, this isn’t another shot from the WWE hurled at the UFC like we saw a few weeks ago with Vince McMahon. This is CM Punk taking at shot at Jon Jones.

It’s obvious that Punk loves MMA and wants it to succeed, but if his beliefs cause him to disagree with Jones getting such a high-profile deal, that’s his prerogative.

A lot of people still haven’t quite forgiven Jones for his mistakes made last May, and the case may be made that CM Punk is one of those people.

We attempted to reach CM Punk on Twitter to confirm the quote was about Jones, but at the time of this post he had not yet responded.

WWE: CM Punk Re-Enacts Chael Sonnen’s Botched Spinning Backfist

Despite the fact that CM Punk and Daniel Bryan have wrestled in several matches on television over the last few months, I refuse to complain about it.

They always give us different moves, different spots and different finishes. Essentially, they never give us the same match twice.

And last Monday was no exception.

During the mixed tag team Match on Monday Night Raw, CM Punk attempted to deliver a spinning backfist to Bryan, but Punk missed and tumbled to the mat. Bryan immediately followed up with a running knee.

On the surface, this is not a big deal.

However, several MMA enthusiasts, including J. Jones of CagePotato.com, have noticed that the sequence was nearly identical to the spinning backfist that Chael Sonnen unsuccessfully used against Anderson Silva at UFC 148.  Sonnen missed, tumbled to the mat and received a big knee from Silva. Sonnen went on to lose the match by TKO.

A comparison between the two matches can be seen here.

CM Punk has spoken publicly about his love for MMA and having a friendship with a few MMA fighters, including Chael Sonnen.

So it is very likely that the spot was no mere coincidence and it was intentionally planned, perhaps as both a spoof and a compliment to his MMA buddy.

Of course, Punk has already used MMA-based techniques in the past, such as the Anaconda Vise, a choke submission from the pages of Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

Sonnen was an NCAA Division I All-American when he competed in amateur wrestling for the University of Oregon. Also, his interviews are very similar to full-blown wrestling promos. Therefore, many are beseeching for a WWE appearance by the UFC star. However, he has recently expressed his loyalty to Dana White and his promotion.

[VIDEO] CM Punk Pays Tribute to Chael Sonnen’s Spinning Mindfart During ‘WWE Raw’

(Chael Sonnen, seen here learning a lesson that Judd Nelson taught the rest of us back in the 80’s. All props be to Fightlinker for the find.)

At this point, we’ve moved past the “illegal” knee, the shorts grabbing, and the vaseline that may or may not have marred Anderson Silva’s destruction of Chael Sonnen at UFC 148. We are not going to convince anyone to change their minds in regards to the gravity (or lack thereof) of Silva’s actions and whether or not they affected the outcome of the fight, and neither will you, because, as Ollie Weeks once said, “You can’t convince some people there’s a fire even when their hair is burning. Denial is a powerful thing.” And before you lash out at our use of the term “destruction” to describe the fight, first consider that that was the term used by Sonnen himself to describe Silva’s tenacity in the second round. According to Dana White, that is:

This is what Chael Sonnen said to me after the fight. He didn’t say it at the press conference, but he said it to me. He said, ‘I have so much respect for this guy, Dana. I’ve been competing in combat sports since I was seven years old. In that first round, when I was on top of him, hittin’ him with those big elbows, I felt him break. I broke him in that first round. He came back in the second round and destroyed me. I’ve never seen anybody do that, ever.

So now that we’ve all put aside our differences, we’d like to focus for a moment on the monumental mistake that was Sonnen’s spinning backfist, which has already begun to take on a life of its own as evident by the header gif. In fact, Sonnen’s mental error has become so popular over the past few days that his good friend and pro wrassler CM Punk decided to reenact the end of the fight on last night’s episode of WWE: Monday Night Raw. Although the result was as to be expected (a major whiff), Punk’s spinning backfist was arguably thrown with better technique.

I’m no lawyer, so I’m simply asking this out of ignorance: Can the laws of plagiarism apply when a fake sport is blatantly ripping off a real one? I know the WWE has predetermined outcomes and all, but the fact that they’re now basing those outcomes on actual fights must mean that the UFC is winning the ratings battle. Or that CM Punk just wanted to pay tribute to arguably the biggest gaff of his friend’s career. They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but this might be pushing it.

CM Punk’s walk out with Chael Sonnen for the co-main event at UFC on Fox 2 was not confirmed by either sportsman—it was never official.

Speaking to MMAWeekly.com the former NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) Division-l standout categorically refuted the claims.

“I gotta tell you, I read those headlines,” said Sonnen. “I never confirmed them. CM Punk never confirmed them. I’ll speak for myself… I’m not in the business of stopping a headline, but I never confirmed that anybody would be joining me. I know he didn’t confirm it.”

The initial reaction once the word got out that WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) superstar Punk would be escorting Sonnen to the Octagon was one of excitement and anticipation—the news went viral—creating a buzz which was felt in both realms of MMA and wrestling.

The early furor surrounding the impending collaboration regarding two of the sport’s most polarizing figures was, however, short lived.

Less than a fortnight following the news, reports surfaced that WWE President Vince McMahon had in essence thrown a spanner in the works, thus preventing Punk from accompanying Sonnen to the cage in his Jan. 28, matchup with Mark Munoz (who has since been supplanted by Michael Bisping following an injury).

Those same reports were then verified by the WWE champion when he spoke to MMAFigting.com.

Sonnen and Bisping are set to throwdown in a title eliminator bout for Anderson Silva’s UFC middleweight crown.

UFC on Fox 2 is scheduled for Jan. 28, 2012, at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois.
