The past couple of weeks have seen a feud like few others develop between UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor and former boxing champion Paulie Malignaggi to the point where it’s completely dominated nearly all MMA headlines just weeks before “The Notorious’” anticipated boxing super fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr on August 26.

The story goes that Malignaggi, who had a bit of pre-installed beef with McGregor already, went to the UFC Performance Institute in Las Vegas to spar with McGregor and help him prepare to box Mayweather, a champion whom many feels is the best of all-time, in his first pro boxing bout. Malignaggi painted a picture where he was treated extremely unfavorably by McGregor’s camp, telling any and all media outlets that would listen the Irish UFC champion was extremely cheap and disrespectful to a sparring partner who was trying to help him.

But the straw that broke the camel’s back was when photos surfaced online of Malignaggi supposedly getting dropped by the much less experienced MMA star. Malignaggi left McGregor’s camp shortly after the photos were released and went on his whirlwind media tour to defend his name, demanding that full footage of the sparring session be released while insisting he ‘beat the brakes off’ McGregor.

Malignaggi claimed McGregor ‘whimpered’ when he was hit with his body shots and that the knockdown was merely a push, but late last night, UFC President Dana White released some footage of the sparring session on his official Instagram account showing that while Malignaggi did appear to be off balance and perhaps even falling, he was also nailed by an uppercut from McGregor that at least appeared to help him fall down. Check it out:

White also released a video containing more footage of McGregor tagging Malignaggi while stating it was ‘for the people who think McGregor can’t box’:

It’s no surprise to see White jump to his star fighter’s aid and defend him, as he clearly has a job to do in promoting a fight that has been billed as the biggest combat sports of all-time but seems to be losing steam with tickets still available at outlandish prices and the overall heat cooling a bit after mixed reviews and some controversial moments during their circus-like world tour from a few weeks back.

The Malignaggi scene has seemed to take over any and all discussion about the fight, and while this would seem to clear it up in at least some way, discussions are going to be raging over whether or not McGregor truly dropped the veteran boxer based on the video. What do you think? Was Malignaggi just falling, or did the Irish superstar legitimately catch him with a strike that dropped him?

Conor McGregor held an open workout on Friday which was met with mixed reviews on Twitter.

Fight fans and pundits alike opined on McGregor’s boxing skills as he winds down preparations for a bout with Floyd Mayweather.

While McGregor is an adept striker in mixed martial arts, many who watched his open workout were more critical than optimistic about where the UFC lightweight champion is skill-wise as he prepares to take on an undefeated boxing legend at his own game.

Check out what people had to say on Twitter about McGregor’s open workout!

The workout didn’t appear to evoke a vocal response from McGregor’s fellow UFC fighters, however.

McGregor vs. Mayweather is set to take place on August 26 in Las Vegas, with Mayweather as the undisputed betting favorite between the two.

Much has been made of boxer Paul Malignaggi leaving Conor McGregor’s training camp as the UFC star prepares for a showdown with Floyd Mayweather.

Both aides have offered their side of the story, with pictures surfacing of McGregor standing over a fallen Malignaggi at the center of the friction between the two.

McGregor’s SBG teammate Tiernan Bradley gave his candid take on the matter, being one of the very few flies on the walls of Straight Blast Gym.

“On the Thursday, we were getting changed after training at the UFC performance institute and that’s when Paulie saw the photo for the first time. He was clearly pissed off, showing us his phone, saying ‘what the (expletive)?’ or whatever,” Bradley said.

It was weird though because after that Conor came into the changing room but Paulie didn’t mention it, even though they did speak.

We were in the car home from training to get food and Paulie was like ‘drop me back to the house.’ You could see he was hanging his head, thinking about things. He was in a bad mood.

We left him to the house and when we came back he was gone – we were only away about 45 minutes. He must’ve been straight in, suitcase packed, out the door.

When you join a Conor McGregor camp, you know pictures are going to be released every day. Sometimes they might not be the most flattering.”

Malignaggi quickly came to his own defense after the photo of him appearing to be knocked down by McGregor, instead insisting that it was the result of a push.

However, McGregor’s camp left the photo up to interpretation, as it looks like a knockdown without any context.

McGregor and his camp have remained quiet on the issue, only cryptically stating they needed a new sparring partner following Malignaggi’s abrupt departure.

The fight is looming. Fans have been waiting for months for the boxing showdown between UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor and boxing legend Floyd Mayweather. Now, we are just a few short weeks away.

Recently, Mayweather brought up the idea of wearing lighter gloves for his upcoming bout with McGregor. Many believed that this was just an angle from Mayweather in order to sell and hype the fight. Keep in mind that the Nevada State Athletic Commission didn’t even allow gloves below ten ounces for fights at 154 pounds.

Although the idea might sound silly, it could be happening as both Mayweather and McGregor are on board with it. The NSAC is also on board as they are set to vote on the fighters being able to wear eight-ounce gloves for their fight, according to Boxing Scene (and confirmed by MMA Fighting). NSAC head Bob Bennett confirmed that the vote would take place on August 16th.

Keep in mind that eight-ounce gloves are generally used for fights that take place at 135 pounds or below in boxing. For fights that range from 135 and 147 pounds, either eight or ten-ounce gloves can be used. Anything about 147 is supposed to be 10 only. With both sides open to the change of the glove size, the commission is open to it as well. It will be interesting to see how things turn out.

The biggest fight of the year is set to go down on August 26th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The bout will air on pay-per-view and is expected to be the most lucrative prize fight of all time.
