Dan Henderson Would Consider Return For ‘A Lot Of Money’

Dan Henderson said no to a comeback fight – unless the money is right.

With former UFC light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell coming out of retirement and his longtime rival Tito Ortiz rumored to follow suit, it seems like old is new once again in the MMA world.

UFC legend Dan Henderson doesn’t have any plans on making an Octagon return, however. That is unless enough money is on the table to persuade him to do so.

The former Pride FC champion was asked whether or not he’d fight again someday, and Henderson was completely blunt about his reasoning:

“I have no plan on getting back in there. I wouldn’t say wasting their time if they had a lot of money.”

Henderson captured titles in Pride FC and Strikeforce made his UFC return back in 2011 and alternated between wins and losses until retiring in 2016. Henderson hung up the gloves officially after a decision loss to then-champion Michael Bisping back at UFC 204.

”Hendo” earned some miraculous victories in his well-traveled career, knocking out Fedor Emelianenko at heavyweight, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua at light heavyweight, Bisping at middleweight, and also securing knockout wins over Hector Lombard and Tim Boetsch before losing to Bisping and retiring.

Henderson kept it competitive for the most part, even towards the end of his storied career, and didn’t necessarily get knocked out into retirement.

Would it be worth the UFC – or any other top-level promotion – offering Henderson enough money for a comeback fight?

When it comes to establishing who MMA’s all-time hardest hitters are, nobody is better placed to make the call than the fighters who have had the misfortune to experience that punching power firsthand.

With that in mind, in this article, we’ll be going beyond just the facts and figures about who hits the hardest by taking on board the opinions of some of mixed martial arts biggest stars as they reveal from personal experience who has the heaviest hands in the sport.

Check out the 10 hardest-hitting fighters in MMA according to the fighters themselves.

Wanderlei Silva

In his heyday, Wanderlei Silva was arguably the most intimidating fighter in the sport, known for his berserker style of brawling that saw him demolish 27 opponents with strikes as he beat opponents from middleweight all the way through to heavyweight.

Hall of Famer Tito Ortiz has said that the hardest punch he ever felt was delivered by Silva, who, “threw an overhand right and caught me right on the chin,” during their fight at UFC 25. “It literally felt like the earth had been turned upside down.”

Another ex-UFC light-heavyweight champion Forrest Griffin also gives the nod to Silva after having a traumatic experience going up against him in training.

”Who hit me the hardest consistently was definitely Wanderlei,” Griffin said during a fan Q&A. “Sparring with him is a horrible idea – it takes years off your life. Don’t do it!”

Former heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum can vouch for that, as he’s gone on record that the first time he sparred Silva he was flash-KO’d twice by him in quick succession despite being in top control at the time.

The granite-chinned Dan Henderson has also claimed that Silva was his toughest-ever opponent, having suffered the first loss of his career to him at PRIDE 12, while he went on to tell MMAJunkie that, “hardest hitter might go to Wanderlei also.”

According to former middleweight champion Michael Bisping, he won’t be fighting Vitor Belfort in his proposed retirement fight in London this March.

The idea of a rematch between the two gained momentum after Belfort was removed from last weekend’s UFC St. Louis co-main event following his opponent Uriah Hall’s withdrawal from the bout.

Bisping discussed Belfort’s challenge on his podcast “Believe You Me,” and put the idea to rest in no uncertain terms:

“I’m not fighting Vitor Belfort in London,” said Bisping. “I’m not fighting Vitor Belfort in London. I am not fighting Vitor Belfort in London. 100 percent, I’m not fighting him. Zero percent chance.”

“I may or may not have one more fight,” explained Bisping. “So here’s the thing. I don’t like Vitor Belfort. People looking at this video are probably saying, ‘Look at his eye, he’s a f**king mess.’ It is part of the reason why I never wanted to do a video podcast before, because my eye is a mess and it was Vitor Belfort that did it and he was roided out of his mind. He’s a known drug cheat. I don’t like the guy. I find him to be a hypocrite. It’s his last fight and he’s probably going to juice like crazy again anyway because who gives a f**k. ‘Oooh, I failed. So what? Retired. Done. Gone.’”

Belfort knocked out Bisping with a second-round head kick back in 2013, when Belfort was in the midst of his TRT era. At the time, testosterone-replacement therapy was still somewhat allowed with an exemption, which Belfort exploited during a terrifying run where he knocked out Luke Rockhold, Bisping, and Dan Henderson.

Bisping suffered a notoriously debilitating eye injury due to Belfort’s head kick, which affects the Brit to this very day.

Belfort barked back, of course, in an effort to goad the former champ into a rematch:

What a shame @mikebisping !!! @ufc just informed me that you have declined the fight. I understand you are scared. The images above pretty much explain it all… So stop pretending that you are tough and just admit that you are afraid. And I thought you were man enough to step up in the octagon with me again, my mistake… unfortunately looks like we will not be delivering to the fans the fight they want to see… Happy retirement, you must be feeling amazing leaving the sport thru the back door… To be a legend is not to everyone! Que vergonha @mikebisping !!! O @ufc acabou de me dizer q vc recusou a luta. #teambelfort

We’ll have to wait and see if Bisping gives in to ‘The Phenom’s’ trash talk, but at this point, it doesn’t seem like the former champion is looking to go out against the legendary but controversial Brazilian.

And even though Belfort is way past his prime, perhaps it’s best Bisping takes some more time off following two stoppage losses in one month last November. Who should ‘The Count’ fight in his final fight – if he should even fight again at all?

The mixed martial arts (MMA) world was dealt some extremely saddening news this weekend when word arrived that former Xtreme Couture and Team Quest coach Robert Follis had surprisingly passed away at only 48 years old.

Few details were made available about the untimely passing, but today (Mon. December 18, 2017) his death has been officially ruled a suicide according to confirmation obtained by MMAjunkie from Colleen Downey, a rep for the Clark County Office of the Coroner/Medical Examiner.

The report stated Follis died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head on State Route 160 in Las Vegas last Friday. No other details were made available.

Over the weekend, a host of several prominent MMA personalities in addition to his friends and family voiced their longtime respect and admiration for Follis, who had made a name for himself as a prominent member of Oregon’s Team Quest, where he was a coach for respected names like Dan Henderson and Randy Couture. He also coached UFC names like Miesha Tate, Kevin Lee, and Brian Caraway at Las Vegas’ Xtreme Couture, a team he recently left after rebuilding it to prominence since relocating there in 2013.

Our hearts go out to Follis’ family, friends, students, and everyone that he impacted during an accomplished career in our sport.
