MMA Legend ‘Totally Understands’ Khabib’s Post-UFC 229 Attack

One notable MMA figure understands why Khabib Nurmagomedov jumped the Octagon at UFC 229 to attack McGregor cornerman Dillon Danis.

Things got way out of hand after UFC 229 earlier this month (Sat. October 6, 2018).

UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov successfully defended his title against Conor McGregor. “The Eagle” submitted the Irishman via fourth-round neck crank. After the fight, however, madness erupted. Khabib, who was allegedly heckled by McGregor cornerman Dillon Danis, hopped the Octagon and went after the jiu-jitsu specialist.

They began to brawl outside the Octagon, sparking another melee inside the cage. A few of Khabib’s teammates entered the cage and attacked McGregor. “The Notorious” ate a few sucker punches before the commission was able to get the situation under control. Both McGregor and Khabib are facing complaints from the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC).

Many people are pointing the finger at Khabib for losing his composure and sparking the entire ordeal by hopping the cage. However, many are also failing to realize the verbal onslaught he had to endure from McGregor in the lead-up to the contest.

McGregor insulted Khabib’s country, family, and religion. Danis’ alleged antics were apparently the straw that broke the camel’s back. Speaking to Submission Radio recently, mixed martial arts (MMA) legend Bas Rutten offered his thoughts on the matter.

The palm-striking maestro admitted that the incident should’ve never happened, however, he did understand where Khabib was coming from:

“Okay, first, let’s say this, it shouldn’t have happened, it’s wrong. I know that it’s all wrong. It should not have happened, I’m not for it. Not at all. But I can totally get it, right? We’re all human. He’s been taking insults for the last six weeks, two months, every day. Every day he decided not to say anything back.

“Yeah, a little here and there, but you know what it is? That’s a drop in a bucket, and it keeps on going and it keeps on going and it keeps on going. And after the fight, finally, the fight is over, they’re finally unloading, and then the coach for McGregor starts saying something to him. That was the drop that made the bucket flow, and he just lost it at that moment.”

Rutten claimed at that point, all of the bad blood McGregor had built with his insults came out in a kind of physical manifestation. “El Guapo” said even the most stoic of men like Khabib could not hold that down anymore:

“Then, everything came back – all the insults about his family, about his religion, about his country. You know, there’s a lot of things (Conor said). And everybody says the same thing, but people go, ‘come on, Bas, you can understand it?’ I say, you can’t understand that? Of course I can understand. Everybody’s human.

“What, he’s a machine? He doesn’t get effected by it? If somebody talks about my family and my religion and my culture, ‘oh, these stupid people from Holland,’ and it’s constantly going, and ‘your friends are terrorists,’ and it just keeps on digging, eventually, yeah, you’re going to hit a snare somewhere.”

Rutten reinforced his belief that the melee should never have happened. He wanted people to remember, however, that McGregor did something similar before UFC 223, so his fans should maybe lighten up in Khabib.

Overall, the all-time MMA legend knows the two will have to face the music from the NSAC:

“And then when the moment presents itself and they keep on going after it, yeah, I can completely understand it. Should it have ever happened? Of course not, I’m not for it. I’m not saying it’s good. Absolutely not. But I can understand it happened. That’s the only thing I’m saying. Well, I said the same thing when Conor went wrong (at UFC 223), right?

“I said, the fans of Conor should give him a break. I mean, we all do stupid stuff, I said at the time. But he’s gonna have to pay for what he does, of course. He needs to go to the athletic commission, and whatever fine it is, well, he’s gonna have to pay that. For sure.”

Rafael Dos Anjos challenges the training partner of former UFC lightweight and featherweight champ Conor McGregor to a fight that will be up for some big money.

Leading Up

The feud between RDA and Dillon Danis all started after the former UFC lightweight champion had some harsh comments about the UFC 229 brawl. RDA took to his official Twitter account where he called Danis a “nobody.” This led to Danis responding to RDA by challenging the former UFC champion to a fight.

Rafael Dos Anjos Challenges

Now, with Danis being serious about, RDA decided to take it one step further by offering a formal challenge. This includes putting big money on the line. He wrote the following on Twitter:

“Why don’t we do like you said to Kevin Lee? I put 100k you put 100k I can go to your gym or you come to my, we jump in the cage with no time whoever walks out take the 200k #yourmove.”

History

For those who may not remember, this feud has some history behind it as they have beefed before through the power of social media. Dos Anjos was supposed to defend the UFC lightweight title against McGregor in 2016. However, this fight got nixed once RDA pulled out with an injury. It would lead to Eddie Alvarez getting the title from Dos Anjos and McGregor later beat him at UFC 205.

Once Upon A Time

Danis recently brought up how Kevin Lee told MMAjunkie Radio that a $100,000 jiu-jitsu match with him was planned. This never happened though. However, Danis didn’t forget about it and brought the talk to life.

“You said you tapped me in a straight roll so I challenged you to show the world what you said was true while making 100k, I see a scared man here backing away from his words now bow down to the king of Jiu Jitsu.”

Brian Ortega Details Conversation With Dillon Danis Following UFC 229 Brawl

Brian Ortega spoke to Dillon Danis at a club following his involvement in the wild post-UFC 229 brawl with Khabib Nurmagomedov.

UFC 229 had a wild ending this past weekend (Sat. October 6, 2018).

Khabib Nurmagomedov successfully defended his 155-pound title against Conor McGregor in the main event. “The Eagle” locked in a neck crank on the Irishman that forced him to tap out in the fourth round. It was the second-ever time that McGregor lost under the UFC banner.

After the fight’s conclusion, however, McGregor cornerman and sparring partner Dillon Danis began antagonizing the Russian with verbal attacks. Khabib had enough, jumping over the cage and onto Danis, sparking a huge brawl outside the Octagon. Meanwhile, inside the cage, a few Khabib teammates attacked McGregor and all hell broke loose.

Fortunately, UFC event security staff were able to contain the situation. Danis’ antagonization obviously sparked the entire ordeal, however, tensions between both sides were already at an all-time high. It appears that after the event Danis was reluctant to retreat to the comfort of his hotel.

Instead, he went out to the club, but kept a low profile given the events that transpired earlier that night. Danis apparently ran into UFC featherweight title challenger Brian Ortega while hitting the town. The pair conversed about their jiu-jitsu backgrounds and spoke briefly of the UFC 229 brawl.

Ortega detailed the conversation during a recent interview with TMZ Sports (via BJPenn.com):

“He came up to me and he was like ‘hey man,’” Brian Ortega said. “At first I was like damn, what are you doing here — especially alone. I was like this guy’s a savage right now. He had a hood on, trying to be low key, but he came up to me, he was respectful, he was like ‘hey man, you’re holding it down for the jiu jitsu community, you’re doing your thing, I admire you, I appreciate it.’

“He was cool about the whole situation, he wouldn’t really tell me much [about the brawl], he was like, ‘yeah man, shit got crazy. These guys started throwing, I started throwing.’ One of his eyes was swollen. He was just telling me he got a concussion, so he got down too man.

“After that, he was going to walk out by himself, and I told my boy, I go ‘make sure this guy gets out of here alright,’ cause, you know, there seemed to be some Russians in that club. So I was like ‘make sure this guy gets out safely.’ Cause the last thing you want is this guy getting jumped going out.”
