Ed Soares is one of the most recognizable and influential managers in mixed martial arts. With a stable of fighters that includes the likes of Anderson Silva, Lyoto Machida, Jose Aldo, Junior dos Santos and the Nogueira brothers, Soares has quickly put together one of the most impressive list of clients in the entire sport.

And just 48 hours before before UFC 117 in Oakland, which featured both Silva and dos Santos, MMA Fighting sat down with Soares in the latest installment of our “Backstage” series.

Watch below as Soares discusses how he got into MMA, Silva’s performance at UFC 112, his relationship with Dana White and much more.

Ed Soares, the manager of a large contingent of the UFC’s Brazilian roster including Lyoto Machida, Anderson Silva, Junior Dos Santos and the Nogueira brothers, was on MMA Scraps radio last week and was asked about Vitor Belfort calling him a clown for mistranslating his fighters interviews.

Although he didn’t address the actual issue of him allegedly misrepresenting what his clients say on the mic in this clip, (he admits doing it in another portion of the interviewSoares did say that he has spoken to Belfort and has since "squashed" any beef they had.

When Chael Sonnen came within an arm’s length of tasting victory against Anderson Silva Saturday night and instead got a mouthful of Anderson Silva’s sweaty cup and his arm nearly torn off for the effort, Vitor Belfort’s chances of getting the next shot at "The Spider" may have gone out the window.

Had Anderson dominated Chael or vice versa, the need for Belfort to challenge either man would never have been greater.

But since Sonnen shone a light on weaknesses in Silva that we had never seen exposed before in the dominant champ and Anderson revealed after the fight that he wasn’t firing on all cylinders due to a nagging rib injury, many fans are now clamoring for a second glimpse at these two fighters in the Octagon. Now it’s looking like if it does come to fruition, the fight may not happen until next spring.

So where does that leave Belfort?

Following his heart-breaking loss to Anderson Silva Saturday night, Chael Sonnen made it very clear at the post-fight press conference that he wanted an immediate rematch against Silva.

That wasn’t just his emotions talking. Sonnen obviously thinks he has what it takes to beat the middleweight champion, and his manager, Mike Roberts, backed up his client on Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour.

Roberts said that both he and Sonnen met with the UFC Monday to talk about what’s next for Sonnen, and in that meeting, Sonnen let it be known that he is ready to dance again with “The Spider.”

“We’ve had talks,” Roberts said. “I just had a talk with [the UFC] [Monday] morning. You know, we don’t tell them how to do their job. The only thing that we do is tell them what we want, and the simple question was asked, ‘What does Chael want?’ And Chael’s answer was, ‘I want to do this again. The party ain’t over yet.’

Soares Not 100% Set on Sonnen vs. Silva II

Okay, not long after speculating that the discussion about Saturday’s ‘where were you when?’ Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen tilt could quite possibly stretch into September, here’s another report to throw in the mix. Okay, not long after speculating that the discussion about Saturday’s ‘where were you when?’ Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen tilt could quite possibly stretch into September, here’s another report to throw in the mix. Immediately following the memorable fight we jumped right on the rematch bandwagon, and by the looks of the internet, that thing is picking up more ‘hop-ons’ by the second. So let’s do it up right?

Well in an interesting report today from MMA Fighting’s Ben Fowlkes, Silva’s manager Ed Soares doesn’t exactly sound like he’s 100% sold on doing Silva vs. Sonnen II right away. While appearing on the MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani, Soares was reportedly quoted saying:

“The way I look at it is, Chael fought his fight. And Chael had Anderson on his back for twenty-two minutes of that fight. …The way I feel is that Chael had Anderson in the position he wanted him, and if he wasn’t able to finish Anderson in twenty-two minutes in the position you said you wanted him in, then, hey man, you had your shot. No offense, not saying you can’t get another shot, but you know what I mean?”

Now Soares did concede that “part” of him thinks it would “”make a lot of sense” to do a rematch; yes, one would think so (cue cash register dinging). In terms of Chael failing to finish Silva, and thus he’s had his “shot,” yeah (as in Bill Lumbergh from Office Space style), don’t think that’s going to fly with most people.
