Former WBC heavyweight champion, Deontay Wilder has teased a potential future fight against undisputed UFC heavyweight titleholder, Francis Ngannou, claiming the bout was mentioned to him in the past – with both him and his promoter sharing an interest in the clash.

Wilder, a former undisputed WBC heavyweight champion, is currently riding a two-fight losing skid against current champion, Tyson Fury – dropping back-to-back rematch and trilogy fight knockout losses to the Manchester native.

Scheduled to return to the squared circle later this month, Wilder, a devastating knockout artist, is set to clash with Robert Helenius at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York – attempting to score his stunning forty-third career victory.

Deontay Wilder claims a Francis Ngannou clash was floated before

Sharing his thoughts on a potential future fight against Cameroonian knockout artist, Ngannou, Wilder, who recently attended Dana White’s Contender Series events at the UFC Apex facility and has trained extensively at the UFC Performance Institute in ‘Sin City’, claimed a fight with the Batie native was previously discussed.

“I think that would be an intriguing fight, and it would be a fight that would bring a lot of interest,” Deontay Wilder said of a fight with Francis Ngannou during an interview with Insider.

“It was mentioned to me before, and Al (Haymon) agreed,” Deontay Wilder explained. “There’s an old saying, ‘If it makes dollars, it makes sense.’ And he agreed as well. Who knows. We may see that fight in the future. And if we do? Oh, boy, what a fight to see. The future is bright.” (Transcribed by TalkSport)

For Ngannou, the undisputed heavyweight champion has been sidelined since undergoing reconstructive knee surgery following his successful title unification win against Ciryl Gane at UFC 270 back in January of this year.

With his contract with the UFC currently up in the air as he remains subject to a ‘champions clause’, Ngannou, who has noted his desire to fight WBC heavyweight best, Fury in the future – insists he must be allowed to box professionally if he is to re-up with the Dana White-led organization.

Francis Ngannou's coach Eric Nicksick wants Jon Jones

Francis Ngannou‘s coach Eric Nicksick recently discussed the prospect of a Jon Jones fight at heavyweight, and he says he wants that action. All-time great ‘Bones’ Jones has been teasing a move to heavyweight for nearly a decade and has been putting on the pounds since vacating his light heavyweight title in 2020.

Eric Nicksick is the head coach at Xtreme Couture MMA and has trained Cameroonian Francis Ngannou into earning the UFC heavyweight championship. He recently sat down with Mike Owens of LowKickMMA in an exclusive interview and discussed the possibility of facing Jon Jones at heavyweight. He said:

“The fight that makes the most sense and the fight that I really would love the opportunity to compete against is Jon Jones. I would love that opportunity, man. I think it Jon is the best if not the best to ever do it. He’s moving up a weight class and he’s coming to challenge himself and then who better to be the guy to challenge him than the heavyweight champion of the world? Yeah, hopefully, that’s the fight that we’re able to make.”

Nicksick also laid out a timeline for the match and said it would be ideal for February or March 2023. As Ngannou had recently undergone surgery and needed some time to recover.

Francis Ngannou vs Jon Jones for the UFC Heavyweight World Championship

The Xtreme Couture MMA coach also pointed out there are few challenges left for the heavyweight world champion Francis Ngannou. The French-born Ciryl Gane is likely the top contender but had also recently been defeated. Nicksick also added that they plan on giving former champion Stipe Miocic another shot.

Speaking to LowKickMMA, Nicksick said:

“Cyril Gane’s always going to be right there. And then you have to still give Stipe Miocic that opportunity as well…We’ve beat, we fought Gane”

But adds that being as competitive as he is, he wants a fight against MMA great Jon Jones.

Jon Jones earned the light heavyweight title in 2011 being the youngest champion in UFC history. ‘Bones’ went undefeated in his championship and dispatched notable fighters such as Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua, Rashad Evans, Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson, Lyoto Machida, and Daniel Cormier, among several others.

Cameroon’s Francis Ngannou earned his heavyweight title via knockout in 2021. In this bout, he avenged an earlier loss to then-champion Stipe Miocic. Ngannou later defended his title against France’s ‘Bon Gamin’ Gane via unanimous decision. Due to injuries and contract disputes with the UFC, Ngannou has not fought since.

Deontay Wilder, Francis Ngannou

Deontay Wilder talked about training with Francis Ngannou and the idea of facing him inside the ring one day.

UFC heavyweight champion Ngannou has been on the sidelines since his last outing against former interim title holder Ciryl Gane in Jan. at UFC 270. “The Predator” went into the bout with a torn MCL and damaged ACL that he suffered in training. Ngannou unified the heavyweight titles and handed Gane the first professional loss of his career using a surprisingly grappling-heavy gameplan.

Deontay Wilder trained with Francis Ngannou at the UFC Apex

In a video shared by The Mac Life on YouTube, Deontay Wilder shared that he got the chance to get a workout in with Ngannou while training at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada.

“Yeah, for sure (I ran into him before),” Wilder said. “He’s been in this area, in this gym before. Me and him training together so all love.”

Wilder is set to mark his return to action against Robert Helenius on Oct. 15 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Coming off two consecutive losses, including his first ever defeat, Wilder will look to get back to winning ways after a year-long hiatus.

Wilder commented on a potential outing with Ngannou

Ngannou has been rallying for a shot at former boxing champion Tyson Fury. However, he needs the green light from the UFC, who are not too keen on the idea. Ngannou is adamant that he will not re-sign with the promotion if they don’t let him box but no concrete developments have come as of yet.

When asked about potentially competing against Ngannou, Wilder did not rule out the possibility.

“Maybe one day who knows the future is bright. Oct. 15 right now is what we are focused on the most. But hey man, a lot of things are in the works for the future.”
