10 MMA Fighters Who Wasted Their Careers

These 10 fighters had the MMA world in the palm of their hands but wasted it away.

What if the last day you have on earth, the person you became met the person you could have become?

It’s a heavy question, but if you are honest with yourself, it’s an excellent barometer to gauge how fulfilling and productive your life was, or could’ve been. One of the saddest things in life is seeing wasted talent, or worse yet, watching someone self-destruct right before your eyes.

This scenario seems to play itself out time and time again in sports and is an equal opportunity destroyer of lives. Take John Daly, Darryl Strawberry, and Ryan Leaf for instance. All three of these athletes wasted their careers away to varying degrees and never came close to reaching their perceived ceiling. Unfortunately, mixed martial arts (MMA) is no different when it comes to athletes wasting their careers away.

This year, the sport celebrated its silver anniversary. In that time the growing number of fighters who have squandered otherwise promising careers is staggering. We here at LowkickMMA compiled a list of the 10 fighters who wasted their careers away.

The list starts here, enjoy:

Jon Jones

We start the list off with none other than decorated-yet-troubled former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon “Bones” Jones.

Jones is still in the process of writing his story, but if history has shown us anything, it’s that athletes that continually mess up usually continue to self-destruct unless a comprehensive lifestyle intervention takes place.

“Bones” makes this list because he is perhaps the best and most recent example of an MMA fighter wasting their potential away. Once considered the unquestioned greatest of all time, Jones is, unfortunately, more likely the butt of a joke than in the running for the GOAT conversation nowadays.

Jones won the UFC light heavyweight championship on two occasions; he would also become the first fighter in company history to be stripped of the same title both times.

Couple that with “Bones” well-documented controversies that include a hit-and-run involving a pregnant woman, multiple failed drug tests, and a seemingly never-ending stream of generally head-scratching outside-the-cage trouble, and it’s no wonder Jones makes the list of fighters that wasted their careers.

Thankfully, UFC legend and current Bellator heavyweight Frank Mir and longtime MMA referee Herb Dean were on hand to break up the potential brawl.

Frank Mir Testifies In Deadly Chokehold Case Involving Police Officer

Frank Mir testified in a Las Vegas case involving a supposedly fatal choke hold:

No one knows submissions like Bellator heavyweight Frank Mir.

The former UFC champion has broken the arms of Tim Sylvia and Antonio “Minotauro” Nogueira, submitted Brock Lesnar with a kneebar, and choked Cheick Kongo completely unconscious in a little over a minute.

So his testimony in a case involving Las Vegas police officer Kenneth Lopera, who stands accused of fatally choking out Tashii Farmer, also known as Tashii Brown. Lopera’s police union doesn’t believe the chokehold caused Brown’s death and rather attributes it to an enlarged heart and drugs in his system during his struggle with Lopera.

While the exact nature of Mir’s testimony remains secret, a local news station reports Detective Steve Grammas with the Las Vegas Police Protective Association says Mir saw the video evidence and quickly came to Lopera’s defense (via MMA Mania):

“When he did that one of his first reactions to me was, Steve, there is no way this guy killed the suspect involved. There’s no way.”

An autopsy report determined cause of death to be asphyxia due to police restraint procedures and other significant conditions included methamphetamine intoxication and (enlarged heart).

The choke Lopera used on Brown was considered a low-level use of force prior to the incident but has since been moved up to the intermediate-level use of force.

Mir most recently fell in his return fight against Fedor Emelianenko at Bellator 198 following a two-year USADA suspension.

Prior to that, Mir had an illustrious if somewhat inconsistent career in the UFC where he was known for his ruthless submissions, where he would break a bone without flinching if his opponent didn’t tap.

Mir himself is a life-long Las Vegas resident.

Just a week removed from Fedor Emelianenko’s emphatic 48-second knockout victory over former UFC champion Frank Mir, Fedor’s brother Alexander followed suit with a knockout over a UFC veteran too.

Emelianenko took on Gabriel Gonzaga in his native Russia on Friday (May 4, 2018), and overcame early adversity to score a knockout in the second round.

Gonzaga was working his top game on a grounded Emelianenko for most of the first frame, but a flurry of punches followed by a knee put the UFC veteran away a round later.

Watch the big stoppage here:

This was Gonzaga’s first fight since leaving the UFC following a knockout loss to Derrick “The Black Beast” Lewis in 2016.

The elder Emelianenko brother has now rattled off a four-fight win streak since returning to competition last year after his release from prison.

Both Emelianenko brothers made their name in Japan’s Pride FC promotion, with Aleks scoring brutal knockouts over James Thompson and Sergei Kharitonov.

Would you like to see Alexander Emelianenko signed to a major promotion?

Perhaps Scott Coker will consider bringing him into Bellator, where fights with Roy “Big Country” Nelson and Mir, and potential rematches with Mirko Cro Cop and Kharitonov could await him.

Earlier this week, the viewership numbers for last weekend’s Bellator 198 event were released, and the event averaged about 750,000 viewers.
