Scorned GGG vs. Canelo Judge Could Still Score UFC 216

Frequently known to produce head-scratching scorecards in big fights, Las Vegas judge Adalaide Byrd saw her critics rise to a never-before-seen level when she scored last Saturday’s massive GGG vs. Canelo Alvarez an astounding 118-110 for Alvarez in a bout many felt Golovkin had won, resulting in a jaw-dropping draw overall.

After the disappointing result in a fight most boxing purists felt was supposed to re-establish the legitimacy of their sport following the Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor spectacle of last month, the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) voiced their continued support for Byrd, whose judging saw her as the sole disagreeing score in six split decisions in MMA last year according to MMA Decisions.

But now, they could be waffling on that support – or something. NSAC executive director Bob Bennett told MMA Fighting this week that he would speak with chairman Anthony Marnell, and together they would decideByrd’s fate for the upcoming UFC 216 pay-per-view on October 7 from Las Vegas:

“I will speak with the chairman (Anthony Marnell III) and Adalaide and we will decide in a week or so.”

Joe Camporeale for USA TODAY SportsC

That was a bit of a departure from Bennett’s previous assessment of the situation, however, as he previously told The Independent that he would give Byrd ‘a break’ as she needed to ‘catch her breath’:

“I’m not going to put her right back in. She’ll still be in the business, but she needs to catch her breath.

“Like in any profession, you have a bad night. Unfortunately, she didn’t do well. I can tell you she conducts training for us, takes judges under her wing, but her score was too wide.”

Indeed the 118-110 score was ‘too wide,’ with a massive windfall of criticism befalling both Byrd and the NSAC for employing her, with some even going as far as to suggest widespread corruption in the grossly uneven draw, where judge Dave Moretti had it 115-113 in favor of Golovkin, and Don Trella scored it an even 114-114.

UFC 216 will feature two title fights when Tony Ferguson meets rising Kevin Lee for the interim lightweight title in the main event while Demetrious Johnson attempts to set the all-time record for consecutive UFC title defenses versus Ray Borg in the co-main event. Needless to say, those are two fights that could certainly do without the inconsistency of Byrd’s judging.

For her part, Byrd absolutely refused to address the situation to MMA Fighting, stating she was oblivious to the criticism so therefore could not comment in a laughable bit of deflection:

“I don’t know anything about that. That’s really all I can say.

“I can’t comment on anything, because I haven’t seen or read anything at all,” Byrd said. “I can’t comment, because I don’t even know what people are saying.”

If she truly does not know what people are saying about her farce of a score for boxing’s most hotly contested bout of 2017, then perhaps the NSAC should take some responsibility for once and give her the break Bennett previously discussed.

After all, it’s just not worth putting fighters’ livelihoods on the line in a sport where the hurt each other for money, especially in a city like Las Vegas where capable judges would seem to be readily available. What do you think? Should Byrd be put on temporary hiatus, or should she simply be let go outright?

Conor McGregor could be setting up his next boxing match after his program with Floyd Mayweather is concluded.

The UFC lightweight champion is set to make his professional boxing debut against, arguably, the greatest of all time in undefeated 49-0 Floyd Mayweather in just two weeks (Sat. August 26, 2017). While Mayweather vs. McGregor has been getting most of the love as it pertains to promotion, another massive boxing contest is just over the horizon as well.

WBA (Super), WBC, IBF, and IBO middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin is set to defend his titles against boxing superstar Canelo Alvarez in a boxing purist’s dream fight from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on September 16, 2017. If McGregor is able to shock the world and pull off a victory against Mayweather, many have begun to ponder the possibility of the Irishman continuing his boxing career against the winner of Golovkin and Alvarez.

McGregor recently spoke to media ahead of his open workout last week and commented on the Canelo vs. GGG bout, taking a few shots at the pair of middleweights (quotes via MMA Mania):

“I’m not really too much of a fan of either of those,” McGregor said. “I think Canelo’s a little but stuck, a little bit flat on his feet. When I watch footage of him I just see him getting peppered — he has no feet under him.”

“Golovkin I think came into camp, for this preparation, badly out of shape. I’m looking at him badly out of shape up in Big Bear and I just see a drained individual,” he said. “So, although they’re supposedly up there as well, I don’t really think they are.”

Plenty of the biggest names in boxing are not happy with the rumored Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Conor McGregor boxing match talk going around, and Gennady Golovkin is one of them.

The WBC, IBF, and IBO Middleweight champion ‘GGG’ has made quite the name for himself since the departure of Mayweather from the boxing world, racking up a 36-0 record that includes 33 knockouts. Before he could challenge Mayweather in what would be a spectacle of an event, however, ‘Money’ walked away from the sport with an undefeated record of 49-0.

Golovkin recently joined ESPN’s First Take (quotes via MMA Mania) to discuss Mayweather’s plans to come out of retirement to fight McGregor, which the Kazakhstani believes is nothing more than a ‘commercial fight’ to save Mayweather’s record:

“It’s not too much interest for this fight because it’s a commercial fight, a businesses fight. It’s not boxing, it’s just very good for Floyd’s record,” said Golovkin.

‘GGG’ would love to get a crack at breaking Mayweather’s undefeated record, and is even willing to drop down to as low as 154 pounds in weight to make it happen:

“I’m not too big, I’m 65, after sparring I’m 64. For Floyd, I will go to 154 or 160 if he wants. This is a huge fight.”

While Mayweather chases down a huge payday against Conor McGregor, Golovkin is trying to make a big money fight of his own happen against Mexican star Canelo Alvarez. Alvarez is booked to take on Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. next on May 6th, while Golovkin is booked to square off against Daniel Jacobs on March 18th from Madison Square Garden.

If each man wins their respective upcoming fights it is likely they will finally meet inside the ring next.

Coming off a crushing ninth round knockout victory over Liam Smith to capture the World Boxing Organization (WBO) junior-middleweight title, Canelo Alvarez appears to have sustained a right thumb fracture after landing a shot to Smith’s head in the second round.

A Golden Boy Promotions spokesman released the following statement Monday:

“Canelo does not need surgery and the prognosis is excellent,” it read (courtesy of LA Times).

“Canelo’s hand will be immobilized for the next six weeks, and he will be unable to fight again in 2016. This does nothing to Canelo’s plans to move up and take on the best in the middleweight division next year.”

Canelo’s promoter and boxing legend Oscar De La Hoya had planned for Alvarez to fight once more in December at Madison Square Garden in New York, with the possibility of facing an opponent the calibre of David Lemieux, Billy Joe Saunders or Curtis Stevens.

Due to the severity of the Mexican star’s injury, however, that is no longer a possibility. Golden Boy Promotions President Eric Gomez stated that it is up to Alvarez if he would like to step back into the squared circle in early 2017, or hold out for his scheduled Cinco De Mayo fight in May:

“If he comes off the rest and feels he wants to do a couple fights before [Gennady] Golovkin, we could have a fight in January or February, but he can’t fight in December,” Gomez said.

“It’s up to him as he’s looking forward to September [2017]. September will be the Golovkin fight.”

Gomez also stated that he is expected to meet with Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler:

“Tom texted me and said he’ll reach out to me to meet this week,” Gomez said.

Canelo vs GlovkinWill the two boxing studs finally step into the squared circle against one another come September of next year? Your thoughts?

Canelo Alvarez Vacates Title, Plans To Continue Negotiations With GGG

Saul “Canelo” Alavarez picked up the biggest victory of his career last November when he scored a decision win over veteran Miguel Cotto to become the WBC middleweight champion.

With Alvarez’s victory, fans had hoped that we would be treated to the biggest fight boxing has to offer: a showdown between Alvarez and then interim WBC, WBA, IBO, and IBF middleweight title holder Gennady “GGG” Golovkin.

Golovkin, a feared knockout artist, was the mandatory challenger to “Canelo’s” throne, but the two sides ultimately agreed to take interim bouts in the meantime.

“GGG” would go on to starch a relative unknown mandatory challenger in Dominic Wade in just two rounds last month, and Alvarez recently knocked out former 147-pound title holder Amir “King” Khan on May 7th in Las Vegas.

With both men coming out victorious, the WBC set a timetable for the two to come to a deal regarding a fight, and if an agreement wasn’t come to by the set deadline, “Canelo” would be stripped of his title.

That deadline has yet to occur, but Alvarez announced today (May 18, 2016) that he would be vacating his title, claiming that he wouldn’t be forced into the ring under any terms aside from the ones he sets for himself.

In a statement released earlier today, “Canelo” explained the situation while also noting that he plans to continue negotiations with Golovkin in hopes of making the fight happen:

“After much consideration, today, I instructed my team at Golden Boy Promotions to continue negotiating a fight with Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin and to finalize a deal as quickly as possible,” Alvarez said in press release (Via Bad Left Hook).

“I also informed the WBC that I will vacate its title. For the entirety of my career, I have taken the fights that no one wanted because I fear no man. Never has that been more true than today. I will fight ‘GGG,’ and I will beat ‘GGG’ but I will not be forced into the ring by artificial deadlines. I am hopeful that by putting aside this ticking clock, the two teams can now negotiate this fight, and ‘GGG’ and I can get in the ring as soon as possible and give the fans the fight they want to see.”

Alvarez’s promoter and head of Golden Boy Promotions, Oscar De La Hoya, reiterated the idea that “Canelo” is without question interested in doing battle with “GGG”:

“There is no denying that Canelo is the biggest star in the sport of boxing. He is eager to get in the ring with ‘GGG’ to show the world that he is also the best pound for pound fighter in the sport, but we won’t negotiate under a forced deadline,” said De La Hoya. “Now that the WBC title is off the table, I am hopeful that ‘GGG’ and his promoter K2 Promotions will come to the table in good faith and get this deal done.”

In the aftermath of Alvarez vacating his title, the WBC has officially promoted Golovkin to be their undisputed middleweight champion of the world.

Do you see this fight ever taking place?
