UFC 129 is in the books, and it’s time to move on to the next UFC event.

That just so happens to be UFC 130, where the lightweight title is on the line when Frankie Edgar (13-1-1) and Gray Maynard (10-0-1 [1 NC]) meet for a third time inside the Octagon.

The first fight between Edgar and Maynard happened at UFC Fight Night 13, where Gray Maynard used his wrestling to control Frankie Edgar, and he walked away with a unanimous decision victory.

From there, Edgar fought his way back up the lightweight ladder, and earned a title shot against future UFC Hall of Famer, BJ Penn.

Edgar went on to upset Penn for the title, and in an immediate rematch where he was once again the underdog, he won again.

While all this was happening, Gray Maynard was also working his way up the ladder to a UFC title shot.

This set the stage for a rematch between Edgar and Maynard at UFC 125.

These two put on a fantastic fight, which ended in a split draw.

Edgar and Maynard are now set up to fight for a third time at UFC 130, with the lightweight title on the line.

Here are six reasons to be excited for the third fight of this trilogy.

Heading into UFC 129, I thought both welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre and featherweight champion Jose Aldo had a good chance of putting on the kind of performance that would move them up in the pound-for-pound rankings.

GSP did what he usually does and won a dominant unanimous decision over a good opponent in Jake Shields, but he didn’t do anything that makes him leapfrog Anderson Silva at the top of the list. And Aldo won a classic battle with Mark Hominick, but it wasn’t the kind of transcendent performance that could put him on top of the MMA world.

So as we review the Top 10 pound-for-pound fighters in mixed martial arts, there’s no change at the top.

MMA Top 10 Lightweights: Gilbert Melendez Makes His Case

Gilbert Melendez thinks he’s the best lightweight in mixed martial arts. Is he right? I don’t think so, not yet. But I sure would love to find out.

The best thing about the UFC buying Strikeforce is that it means we’ll eventually see the champions of the respective promotions fighting each other. For now the mantra is “business as usual,” but we all know it’s just a matter of time before we see the best of Strikeforce inside the Octagon. And there might not be a better fight out there than Melendez taking on the top of the UFC lightweight division.

It will probably be 2012 before we get to see that: UFC lightweight champ Frankie Edgar has to fight Gray Maynard in May, and the winner of that fight is expected to fight the winner of the June Anthony Pettis-Clay Guida bout after that. But it sure would be fun to see Melendez retiring the Strikeforce belt to his trophy case and fighting for the UFC gold.

Find out where I think Melendez stacks up in the lightweight division below.

For years, No. 1 has been a guess, an argument, a debate, and nothing more. But in this brave, new world, we move closer than ever to getting our answer. It will never be final, of course. Even when you have a dominant champion, there is always someone else on the way up, someone who plants doubt in your mind. But we’re at least finally heading in the right direction. With the recent Zuffa-Strikeforce deal, we have 95 percent of the world’s best fighters under the same umbrella, and at some point in the near future, they’ll actually get in the cage together and fight.

Right now, it’s something like a civil war, two sides who need to be unified for the good of everyone involved, for both the people fighting and those waiting for resolution. Until then we’ll keep guessing as soldiers, err… fighters like Gilbert Melendez fire off their best ammunition, both physical and verbal.

The first man to defend a title in our new era, the Strikeforce lightweight champion wasted little time in voicing what was already on everyone’s minds.

“I’ll tell you what, I think it’s time we unify some titles,” Melendez said. “Who wants to see me fight for that UFC title? Let’s unify them in my hexagon. I’m the No. 1 lightweight in the world, baby. I’m coming for the spot.”

Going into his UFC 125 title shot match, Gray Maynard was the clear favorite in all the sportsbooks. But now after their 5 round battle which Frankie Edgar believes he won the last 4 out of 5 rounds and Maynard believes he scored a 10-7 in the 1st round and won rounds 3 and 5, but the judges decided was a DRAW, it looks as if the tides have turned in the books and Maynard has more to prove. Maynard is the dog by as much as (+110) and that value should go down to about +100 (as it has in some books) so place your bets now if you feel that UFC 130: Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard (the Trilogy) will end with the Lightweight belt wrapped around Maynard’s waist.
