Dillashaw vs. Barao 2, Rampage vs. Maldonado, Bisping vs. Dollaway Confirmed for UFC 186

It’s official: UFC 186 (April 25th, Montreal) will be headlined by a rematch between bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw and ex-champ Renan Barao, and will also feature the UFC return of Quinton “Rampage” Jackson against “The Iron Hillbilly” (actual nickname!) Fabio Maldonado. Both matchups were previously rumored last week, but UFC president Dana White confirmed them yesterday during an appearance on TSN’s SportsCenter.

But that’s not all, folks. White confirmed five more matchups for the card, which are as follows…

Rory MacDonald vs. Hector Lombard: Yeah, we already knew about this one. The winner gets the next welterweight title shot. Or maybe the Hendricks/Brown winner gets it. Or maybe Kelvin Gastelum gets it? Cripes, who knows.

Michael Bisping vs. CB Dollaway: Bisping is coming off his guillotine-choke loss to Luke Rockhold at that nutso Sydney card, while Dollaway was recently blown up by Lyoto Machida. Fun fact: Bisping hasn’t won two fights in a row since 2011.

Olivier Aubin-Mercier vs. David Michaud: This is not an MMA fight, but the finals of Top Chef Montreal. Can Aubin-Mercier’s innovative molecular gastronomy defeat the impeccable French traditionalism of Michaud? (Ed. note: Okay fine, this is a lightweight fight between two guys without Wikipedia pages. Both are 1-1 in the UFC. Thanks, Sherdog.)

Jessica Rakoczy vs. Valerie Letourneau: Rakoczy was TKO’d by Julianna Pena at the TUF 18 Finale in November, and currently holds the worst professional record of any UFC fighter (1-4 with one no-contest). Letourneau was choked out by Roxanne Modafferi during her elimination fight to get into the TUF 18 house, but was given a UFC contract anyway and won a tough split-decision against Elizabeth Phillips last June.

Two months after accidentally blasting a hole through his leg, welterweight veteran Joe Riggs has been rescheduled to make his Octagon return at UFC on FOX 13: Dos Santos vs. Miocic (December 13th, Phoenix). Riggs will face Ben “Killa B” Saunders in a booking that proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that UFC matchmaker Joe Silva is a closet Bellator fan. Basically, this fight is for the unofficial Fight Master Season 2 certificate. The stakes literally couldn’t be higher.

Saunders was successful in his own UFC return in August, submitting Chris Heatherly with an omoplata — the first such finish in the promotion’s history — after a 7-3 run in Bellator. Riggs has yet to compete this year, but is riding a six-fight win streak. And in case you missed it, Joe Riggs says his recent near-death experience started when he brought a gun to his gym and his friend cocked it. To which we can only respond: Joe, that “friend” of yours is trying to kill you.

In other UFC on FOX 13 booking news, former flyweight title challenger John Moraga will face contender Jussier “Formiga” da Silva, who has scored back-to-back wins against Scott Jorgensen and Zach Makovsky. Moraga is coming off a guillotine choke victory against Justin Scoggins at UFC Fight Night 50 earlier this month.

Also, Matt Mitrione vs. Gabriel Gonzaga was added to the card last week. We missed that news somehow. But now we know. Mitrione via shoulder bomb.

Joe Riggs shot himself in the leg last week? In case you forgot, Riggs was cleaning his gun when it discharged. The gunshot wounded his hand and leg.

TMZ just released pictures of Riggs’ wounded leg, and they’re brutal. We’d make a “that’s even worse than Marvin Eastman’s cut!” joke but this is a pretty serious matter. CagePotato doesn’t like to joke and ball-bust about life threatening things.

A video is embedded above which shows the images and provides footage of Riggs discussing the injury. If you don’t feel like watching that, here are the photos (via TMZ). Be warned, they are EXTREMELY graphic. Don’t look at them if you’re squeamish.

Nasty. The accident couldn’t have come at a worse time for Riggs. The UFC signed the 31-year-old after he won Bellator’s “Fight Master” reality show. They booked him to face Paulo Thaigo at UFC Fight Night 51, but that obviously won’t happen now. We wish Joe Riggs the best in his recovery.

 

 

LookOutaWhale’s Latest Creation Gives the Diaz-Riggs Hospital Brawl the Animated Treatment It Deserves

We all know the story of Nick Diaz‘s barnyard hospital brawl with Joe Riggs following their legal, in-ring brawl at UFC 57, but the real question is: Have we ever seen it set to wonky animation and with actual interview clips taken from Riggs and Diaz? Until now, that answer has been a dispiriting “no,” but thankfully, MMAnimation master lookoutawhale has bequeathed us with “The Animated Tales of Nick Diaz”, and my God is it glorious.

While “Diesel” may have come away the unanimous decision win at UFC 57, it was Diaz who won the “real” war. That’s according to Diaz himself, of course, but I’ll be a monkey’s uncle if the anti-bullshit superhero would embellish even the slightest detail of a story as infamous as this. Although if you ask me, Stockton’s finest should be thanking his lucky stars that Riggs wasn’t packing heat that night. Or maybe Riggs should be.

Joe Riggs Shoots Himself While Cleaning Gun, Forced Out of UFC Return Against Paulo Thiago

We’ll start with the good news: Joe Riggs is alive and safe. The bad news is, his unlikely UFC return has been postponed because he accidentally shot himself last night. From UFC.com:

Scheduled to return to the Octagon in Brasilia, Brazil on September 13 against Paulo Thiago, veteran Joe “Diesel” Riggs’s first UFC bout since 2006 has been put on hold after an accident at Riggs’ home in Arizona Monday night.

The UFC released the following statement on the incident.

“We were made aware that newly-signed UFC competitor Joe Riggs was involved in an unfortunate accident last night. While cleaning his permitted firearm (a pistol), the gun discharged, injuring his hand and upper thigh. Riggs was transported to a nearby hospital in Arizona where he is being treated by physicians. We wish Joe a speedy recovery.”

A replacement opponent for Thiago is being sought and will be announced shortly.

Gun accidents claim the lives of hundreds of people every year in this country. We like to bust balls and crack wise on CagePotato, but this is a topic we would never joke about.

Riggs hasn’t competed in the Octagon since a 4-4 UFC stint way back in 2004-2006, which ended with a quick ‘n’ gnarly knockout loss to Diego Sanchez at UFC Fight Night 7.

Still just 31 years old — he made his pro debut in September 2001, just days after his 19th birthday — Riggs is already a veteran of 55 MMA fights. It’s hard to say how much gas “Diesel” has left in the tank, although it’s good to see him potentially earning some paychecks again, considering that he recently got his ass dug out by the IRS.

Paulo Thiago is desperate for a win these days, having just lost to a non-wiki fighter named Gasan Umalatov at the TUF Brazil 3 Finale, which represented his sixth defeat in his last eight fights. This summer, Thiago helped maintain order at the World Cup in Brazil, and now he has to fight Joe Riggs to save his UFC contract.

It’s a crazy world.
