Former undisputed light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones found himself in a spot of bother again before UFC 200. After serving a suspension that saw him stripped of the 205-pound title, Jones’ return at UFC 197 was lacklustre. There was no question about the decision win over Ovince St-Preux, but Jones did not look the same. Was it ring rust? Daniel Cormier believed the best Jon Jones had been and gone, and pointed out the impact of all the partying. The failed drug test for cocaine, his infamous New Mexico hit-and-run that lost him the title, and the self-confessed Marijuana addiction were now apparently a thing of the past.

Then came the shocking news of Jones’ failed drug test. USADA had found a banned substance in a June 16 random dope screen, once again putting the troubled ‘Bones’ in the sin bin. The interim champion held a press conference after being pulled from UFC 200 on just three days notice. Protesting his innocence in an emotion-fuelled interview, Jones claimed he had no knowledge of the banned substance. At this point nobody knew what USADA had found.

The Big Reveal

It wasn’t too long before we learned that Clomiphene was the banned substance in Jon Jones’ system. The anti-estrogen typically used after a steroid cycle is not allowed in or out of competition. Ironically this same substance was found in both of Brock Lesnar’s failed UFC 200 drug tests. ‘Bones’ remained quiet as he was removed from the official light-heavyweight and P4P rankings. Until yesterday.

Claiming he had some ‘good news’ for his legion of followers, Jones has led many to believe he’s making some progress with the USADA testers. Perhaps it was a tainted supplement after all, there are numerous recent cases that can attest to the real possibility of this happening. Both Tim Means and Yoel Romero had recent suspensions overturned following similar circumstance.

Joe Rogan Questions Everything - Season 1

Joe Rogan on Jon Jones

During a recent episode of his popular podcast, UFC commentator Joe Rogan gave his opinion on Jon Jones. Bearing in mind this was filmed before the Jones message to his fans about ‘good news,’ it still raises some interesting questions and points for debate.

“I don’t know if there’s anything wrong with doing blow, I don’t think it’s a positive drug, but some people enjoy it. Some people enjoy drinking, I enjoy drinking, ad I don’t think that’s a positive drug. But (cocaine) is not something you are supposed to be doing three weeks outside of a world title fight. You’re out doing blow just 21 days before, that’s crazy.”

“If you ask his coaches they’ll tell you he surrounds himself with the wrong people. Jon is an extremely talented guy. Maybe one of the most talented guys to ever compete in the sport. When the chips are down he gets through things, he overcomes adversity.”

“Isn’t there also the issues that fighters have impulse control problems? There are direct correlations between head impacts and impulse control. It can’t be good to get kicked in the head, or punched in the face, any kind of impact causes your brain to get jostled.”

“The stuff he tested positive for, anti-estrogen, that’s not even beneficial. The only time its beneficial is when you’re coming off steroids, but he didn’t test positive for steroids before. It could have been a tainted supplement, who knows what wacky shit he was taking. I don’t know.”

Former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar made his triumphant return to fighting last month at July 9’s UFC 200 from Las Vegas, Nevada. After nearly five years away from the sport, Lesnar came in and essentially dominated a top 10 heavyweight in Mark Hunt, although the victory has since been plagued after Lesnar was notified by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) of a potential anti-doping violation regarding two of his drug tests.

Little has been made clear regarding the details of the situation, but according to a report from MMAJunkie, “The Beast” is set to go before the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) on August 23, 2016 in Las Vegas where a temporary suspension request will be heard.

Lesnar wasn’t the only big name to be notified of a potential anti-doping violation regarding UFC 200, as former light heavyweight champion and former pound-for-pound king Jon “Bones” Jones was also popped by USADA. Jones, unlike Lesnar, was unable to compete at the landmark event, as he was pulled from his scheduled main event rematch with reigning 205-pound titleholder Daniel Cormier just days before the fight was slated to take place. It appears as if Jones’ case has been delayed. Both Lesnar and Jones tested positive for estrogen blockers.

Do you see either man receiving a significant punishment?

Coach: Only One Man Can Beat Jon Jones

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones is considered by many to be the greatest fighter of all-time, and without question to be the greatest 205 pounder of all-time, although trouble outside of the cage has hindered his professional fighting career. Former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones is considered by many to be the greatest fighter of all-time, and without question to be the greatest 205 pounder of all-time, although trouble outside of the cage has hindered his professional fighting career. The latest incident regarding Jones occurred when he was pulled from his massive rematch with Daniel Cormier just days before the landmark UFC 200 event due to a potential anti-doping violation.

A possible punishment for Jones or a solution to the issue has yet to be announced, but the former pound-for-pound king could be facing a two year suspension. Jones’ longtime striking coach, Mike Winkeljohn, doesn’t appear to be too worried, however, saying that there’s only one man who could beat “Bones”:

“Oh no. You know what, assuming he doesn’t get distracted on time off – and what we’re talking about is just hypothetical,” Winkeljohn said on an edition of Submission Radio when asked if two years away could leave Jones less competitive. “I don’t know how much time off, so I’m not sure if I should even worry about that at the moment. I’ve always said no one beats Jon Jones but himself. That’s it. And he’s got many, many years to keep going and figure this out if he’s got the opportunity to and if it turns out that he’s able to.”

This may be a fair statement given the fact that Jones is currently 22-1 in his professional mixed martial arts career with his only loss coming by way of disqualification in a bout he was clearly winning. The former champion has run through a murderer’s row of 205-pound contenders while rarely getting challenged. With that being said, Winkeljohn feels as if Jones beat himself regarding the UFC 200 debacle, saying that he and his management must be aware of what goes into his body:

“Oh I was pissed off at that situation in that he’s gotta be careful.” Winkeljohn said about Jones getting pulled from UFC 200. “We’ve gotta be careful. Everyone’s gotta be careful. Everything you put in your body, no matter who gives it to you, you can’t just take whatever, because you never know what’s in there, what it’s tainted with, what’s going to come up on a drug test. And I don’t think he would have done anything out of the ordinary to try to do a performance enhancer type situation, but what’s going on is apparently something’s tainted and hopefully that’s what’s going to come out here soon and then hopefully all this bad talk about Jon Jones will start going away and we’ll get him back to fighting.”

“I think it’s both,” he continued, talking about whether it’s on Jones or his management to check his supplements. “You know, I think it’s both. There’s no doubt about it and he’s learned – I think he’s learned that he’s gotta pay attention to these things and his management has learned that they gotta help him pay attention to those things. So everybody is getting on board and paying attention a little bit more, because these tests are popping up and it seems to be happening quite often that people are taking something that was made by a company that has some illegal stuff, and maybe they’re using the same machines to pack it. I’m not sure how it happens, but trace amounts are coming up. So with that being said, people just have to be really careful and just go back to eating normal diets and don’t take anything else but vegetables and meats and good food.”

Do you expect to see Jones back in the Octagon any time soon?

Ovince St-Preux: Hey Jon, When Did You Start Taking PEDs?

The ugly situation surrounding UFC interim light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones continues to rule headlines. Yesterday (July 18, 2016) it was confirmed that the former undisputed 205-pound boss and pound-for-pound king had indeed been flagged for estrogen blockers. ‘Bones’ once again argued his innocence once the news had broke, claiming ignorance about the contents of a supplement

‘Bones’ once again argued his innocence once the news had broke, claiming ignorance about the contents of a supplement he’d been using.

After such a jaded past outside the octagon, Jones’ legacy within the realm of combat sports has come under question from many. Former opponent and rival Daniel Cormier has actually remained reasonably quiet on ‘Bones’ and his failed drug test. It’s been mostly a backlash from fighters and fans that Jones has been dealing with, and that includes his UFC 197 opponent Ovince St-Preux.

Jon Jones UFC 197

Jones defeated ‘OSP’ at UFC 197 when ‘DC’ pulled out of the rematch with an injury. The 33-year old fighting out of Knoxville, Tennessee put in a game performance on April 23, but proved to be no match as ‘Bones’ cruised to the unanimous decision. In the wake of the confirmation of PCT (post cycle therapy) substances being found in Jones’ system, St-Preux had some stern words for the troubled interim champ on Facebook:

“On June 18th, Jon Jones was caught taking Post Cycle Therapy (PCT) drugs. This means he was on some form of Performance Enhancing Drugs (PEDS) before this date. The only real questions are: When did he start taking them? Was it before his fight with me or after? There are not many people who can answer this question, but Jon Jones is one of them. So, I am asking: When did you start taking PEDS Jon? I wanted to fight the best fighter in the world, but I did not sign up to fight a cheater. So, be a stand-up person, tell us all the truth. We all know you were on PEDS because you got caught taking PCT drugs. Just tell the world the truth.”

Another angle on this developing saga is that Jones team has grossly mismanaged him. Chael Sonnen recently exploded on his podcast, claiming Jones’ management had phoned to complain about ‘The American Gangster’s’ appearance on the Joe Rogan Experience. Sonnen had leaked that estrogen blockers were found in ‘Bones’ system a week ago Monday.

One her highly controversial comment came from Michael H DiSabato on Twitter. The former D1 wrestler once called out Jones for cocaine use months before he tested positive in 2014, taking to social media with the following rants:

Rashad Evans Questions Jon Jones’ Legacy: Was He Clean?

Jon Jones and Rashad Evans are both former UFC light heavyweight champions. Both men are also former teammates as well as former bitter rivals. The bad blood between the two has seemed to lessen over the past few years, but regardless of where they stand today, the two men will likely always have a connection.

Jon Jones and Rashad Evans are both former UFC light heavyweight champions. Both men are also former teammates as well as former bitter rivals. The bad blood between the two has seemed to lessen over the past few years, but regardless of where they stand today, the two men will likely always have a connection.

With that being said, Evans felt ‘disappointment’ when he got wind of the news regarding Jones’ potential anti-doping violation just days prior to his scheduled UFC 200 main event with reigning title holder Daniel Cormier. The failed test also makes “Suga” question how clean Jones has been throughout his career:

“I just felt huge disappointment. As a fan first, and as somebody who is closely associated with Jon…I just hate to see somebody that has so much potential to do so many great things have this kind of situation happen to them. In my opinion, he’s probably one of the greatest fighters to ever put on gloves but now his legacy is going to be associated with the asterisk of ‘was he clean?’ and all the other things that he is known for outside of the cage.

“It’s very unfortunate. You look at Jon perform and what he’s been able to do – the body of work he’s been able to accomplish – and just look at the physical specimen of who Jon is, you just think that he doesn’t really need any kind of help with any kind of performance enhancing drugs. But this is a game of just trying to recover and making sure that you do what you need to do in order to train again. So maybe he got himself caught up trying to take something to help him recover.” Evans told ESPN.

In the aftermath of the shocking news, we have still yet to receive all of the details surrounding the situation including what exactly Jones tested positive for, but there has been some speculation from both Evans and former UFC title challenger Chael Sonnen implying that it may have been estrogen blockers that triggered the failed test for “Bones”.

Estrogen blockers are typically used when a man is cycling off of steroids, and Evans claims that Jones may have been trying to hide something:

“What he took, I have no idea. It’s still yet to be confirmed, but it does look like he was trying to hide something or he was trying to balance something out if that’s in fact what he did get caught for. “

How does this news effect Jones’ legacy?

Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones shared one of the most intense rivalries in mixed martial arts history before their fight at UFC 182. Originally meant to be fighting at UFC 178, the two fought live on stage at a sensational press conference in Las Vegas before the bout was moved to the January 3, 2015 date due to injury. The MMA world waited with eager anticipation for their long due battle in the octagon and, although victorious on that night, ‘Bones’ would not emerge unscathed. It was later revealed that an OOC (out of competition) drug screen had found cocaine in Jones’ system.

Then came the New Mexico hit-and-run drama, the subsequent suspension and stripping of the belt from Jones and his eventual return to action at UFC 197. The new Jon Jones was apparently now free of addiction, looking to get back on track and facing Cormier for the rematch was motivating him to stay on the straight and narrow. Unfortunately ‘DC’ was injured, and ‘Bones’ instead faced Ovince St-Preux on April 23. Defeating ‘OSP’ by decision, Jones set up the second fight with Cormier who had won the title in his absence.

Following the removal of Conor McGregor vs. Nate Diaz 2 as the UFC 200 main event, Daniel Cormier vs. Jon Jones 2 was announced during the promotion’s slot on ‘Good Morning America.’ The historic event was also boosted by the appearance of Brock Lesnar and two other title fights, this was Jones’ chance at redemption in many respects. Events would transpire, all within three days of the event this past Saturday July 9, that laid waste to ‘Bones’ vs. ‘DC’ 2, and have also started yet another phase of trouble for the Greg Jackson’s standout.

USADA (United States Anti Doping Agency) revealed in the days leading up to UFC 200 that Jones failed a drug test on June 16, and was therefore ineligible to compete in the main event. Cormier was shattered by the news, ‘Bones’ was highly emotional when addressing the media the day after Jeff Novitsky made the announcement, and UFC president Dana White was furious. Now the dust has settled on UFC 200, and Cormier defeated late replacement Anderson Silva, the current light-heavyweight kingpin is taking a very spiritual view of his biggest rival.

Speaking during Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour, and as transcribed by MMAMania’s Adam Guillen Jr.Daniel Cormier says he feels bad for Jon Jones, and wishes him luck with his latest struggle.

“I’m in the sauna and we’re listening to it and he seemed very sad. I went back to my room before my final wight cut and I actually watched it and I could see that he was heartbroken. So, it was very sad man. I don’t like to see people hurt like that, and I could see that he was hurt. I try to do things for me — things that feel better for me and for my mental and me as a human being and spirit. So I just made sure he knew that his apology was accepted and that I do wish him the best in his journey.”

“I don’t know. When everything comes out we will know better. If it comes out that he was doing performance enhancers, then he was obviously trying to cheat. I mean, I can only be honest. I call it like it is. If it comes out that he was doing performance enhancers; I don’t know if it was because the ‘OSP’ fight didn’t go as he expected, I don’t know. I don’t know what it was that made him do whatever he did if it comes out that he was doing performance enhancers.”
