If Overeem vs. Werdum Didn’t Live Up to the Hype, Maybe These 10 Fights Will

MMA fans eagerly anticipated the rematch between Strikeforce Heavyweight Champion Alistair Overeem and his former foe, Fabricio Werdum, at the previous Strikeforce show that featured two of the quarterfinal bouts in the heavyweight tournament.

The fight didn’t live up to the hype, and Overeem won a lackluster decision after three rounds of minimum offense and a lot of defense.

One bad fight doesn’t change the course of events that are to come, and it makes fans more excited to see a good fight and one that won’t let them down.

Maybe these 10 fights will live up to the hype, and they will all be happening soon.

UFC 132 Fight Card: UFC Champ Jon Jones Picking Cruz over Friend Urijah Faber

When Urijah Faber steps into the Octagon on July 2 to fight Dominick Cruz for Cruz’s bantamweight title, he will have friend and business partner Jon Jones cheering for him, but not expecting him to dethrone Cruz.

Jones, recently spoke to SB Nation on a number of topics, one of which was the upcoming fight at UFC 132 between Faber and Cruz.  Jones told Thomas, “Urijah’s my friend and business partner, and I’m definitely rooting for him to win.”

Jones’ heart and his head seemed to be at different places as he added, “If I actually had to put my money on it I would think that Dominick Cruz would win the fight. He’s been winning very impressively and he seems to be always improving, Urijah’s last two fights haven’t been finishes.”

Cruz enters the title bout on an eight fight winning streak. In fact, his first and only loss came at the hands of Faber, back in March of 2007, when the two met for Faber’s WEC featherweight title. Faber won that bout via first round submission.

Cruz captured the WEC bantamweight title with a win over Brian Bowles in March of last year and when the WEC was absorbed into the UFC, he became the UFC champion.

Faber enters the fight with a record of 25-4.  Since losing his WEC title to Mike Brown in June 2009, Faber has had an up and down time in the cage, going 4-2 since that loss.

While Jones was being honest in his assessment of the Cruz versus Faber fight, that opinion could result in some awkward business meetings for Faber and Jones.

For now it appears that the dancing days for Faber and Jones may be on hold.

Jon Jones: Is the UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Losing Focus on His Title?

After Jon Jones dominated Mauricio “Shogun” Rua at UFC 128 to capture the light heavyweight title, speculation began as to who in the division would ever be able to defeat him. Many opined that Jones would remain champ for a long time to come. While that may be true, let’s not forget these famous words: “Welcome to the Machida era!”

Jones has been booked to face former light heavyweight champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson on September 24 at UFC 135. The fight will be the main event from Denver, Colorado’s Pepsi Center.

While the fight with Jackson is still a few months away, there have been some interesting developments out of the Jones camp that point to the fact that perhaps his main focus is not MMA and the UFC light heavyweight title.

The first indication that Jones may be thinking that the UFC title is just a steppingstone to bigger things came earlier in the month, when MMAHEAT caught up with Jones on the Warner Brothers studio lot. In the interview, Jones admitted that although he had once looked at acting as something that could sidetrack him, he was warming to the idea and had been speaking to the Warner folks about possible acting gigs.

Jones also recently spoke to Luke Thomas of SB Nation, where he revealed another piece of information that may lead one to believe that his focus is slipping from the light heavyweight strap that he has yet to defend. Jones told Thomas, “I think personally it would be cool to be considered a heavyweight champion of the world. I think it doesn’t get much better than that. But I’m totally fine with being the light heavyweight champion.”

Jones did qualify his statement with the remark that he is fine with the light heavyweight title, but to hear him entertain thoughts on the heavyweight title may indicate that he is looking past his first title defense.

This may all be speculation, but it does seem that Jones may very well be looking a little too far into the future for his own good.

Jones would be well served to look at a champion that has established a legacy, Georges St-Pierre. St-Pierre once looked past an opponent, Matt Serra, and it cost him his title.

Jones is a young fighter, and while that youth and exuberance can serve him well, it can also have devastating results. If Jones loses his focus, it will only take one of Rampage’s “bungalows” to turn him into a champ with zero title defenses.

Ariel Helwani and Alistair Overeem Doing the “Dougie” Dance (VIDEO)

I don’t know what’s up with the MMA industry getting all into the “Teach Me How to Dougie” song recently when it was released over a year ago but Urijah Faber and Jon Jones recently.

I don’t know what’s up with the MMA industry getting all into the “Teach Me How to Dougie” song recently when it was released over a year ago but Urijah Faber and Jon Jones recently put out this fun video doing the dance and now Ariel Helwani invited Alistair Overeem to the MMA Hour studio and asked him to Dougie. It looks like Ariel was attempting to cheer up Overeem who is disappointed in his lackluster performance against Fabricio Werdum at the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix. Ariel thinks Overeem needs to incorporate some swagger into his fights. Ariel is also (surprisingly) a pretty good dancer.
