Chael Sonnen was offered to be the backup for Jorge Masvidal vs. Nate Diaz boxing fight on July 6: 'I accept'

Chael Sonnen was offered the role of backup for Jorge Masvidal’s upcoming boxing bout with Nate Diaz.

The long-awaited rematch between ‘Gamebred’ and the ‘Stockton Samurai’ was originally scheduled to go down on June 1 at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles. However, that plan has recently changed with their scrap receiving a new date and venue.

The fight will now emanate from The Honda Center in Anaheim on Saturday, July 6. Boxing Scene was the first to break the news.

The date change also came with another interesting rumor suggesting that former three-time UFC title challenger Chael Sonnen was offered the role as a backup for the fight.

During an appearance on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani, ‘The American Gangster’ confirmed that there was some truth to the news, but with one major caveat.

“I don’t like that word [backup],” Sonnen said. “They used a different work because there was no scenario where I would fight with Nate and they knew that. So it was a different word, but meaning that if Nate can’t do it, will you take on Masvidal? And I said absolutely. You know what pissed me off about that? First off, I never got the credit for it, and second, Masvidal said he would give me a contract and pay me the biggest bag and not throw his right hand [in the fight]. That was a stupid thing to say.

“To pay me my biggest bag before I asked for it makes me not respect you as a businessman. I never respected him anyway, but he didn’t know that. And then to not throw his right hand like he was Mr. Right Hand, but I accepted. Please put it in the contract that you’ll pay me a bunch of money and that you won’t hit me with your right hand. Does he think I would turn that down? What’s next? There’s no weigh-in? Where does his stupidity end? And whatever the answer is… Whatever he keeps on saying, I accept.

“Keep limiting yourself. I’m going to do all those things, and more. That’s why they call me a cheater.”

‘Juiced Up’ Chael Sonnen is ready to throw hands with Jorge Masvidal anytime

It’s no secret that there is no love lost between Chael Sonnen and Jorge Masvidal. ‘Gamebred’ has lobbed threats of physical violence against the man from the mean streets of West Linn, Oregon on more than one occasion — his beef being Sonnen’s history of utilizing TRT and PEDs throughout his MMA career.

“I would fight Masvidal right now,” Sonnen added. “He can use his right hand. He can kick me in the nuts. He can do anything he wants. I will be juiced up and I will beat Jorge Masvidal anytime, but I won’t take the fight from Nate and that is exactly what I told these jabronis.”

Jorge Masvidal claims Colby Covington is a closeted crossdresser: 'He should be more open about himself'

The longstanding rivalry between Jorge Masvidal and Colby Covington has delivered yet another unexpected twist.

Though they only met once inside the Octagon, Masvidal’s feud with his former friend turned bitter enemy is among the most notable in UFC history, and it appears to be far from over.

Colby Covington and Jorge Masvidal

During a recent interview with Vlad TV, ‘Gamebred’ was asked about accusations that Covington had levied against him, suggesting that his retirement at UFC 287 was nothing more than a ploy to avoid PED testing.

“It’s a fake retirement,” Covington said in an interview with Inside Fighting. “We all know people in the UFC that don’t retire, they’ll get out of the USADA pool, probably go do some steroids, and come back because he doesn’t know how to make money in any other way than fighting.”

Snapping back, Masvidal suggested that Covington would say anything to try and keep himself relevant — by no means an unreasonable statement for anyone familiar with the three-time UFC title challenger’s work. However, it was what came out of Masvidal’s mouth next that had everyone scratching their heads.

“That guy will say anything,” Masvidal said. “That guy wears skirts and he doesn’t tell the whole world and he goes to sleep wearing thongs. Maybe he should be more open about himself. There actually is no more PED testing because USADA’s been disbanded, so there goes your other f*cking theory.

Colby will just say anything to get people talking about his silly-ass name, but ever since I ‘allegedly’ took his soul outside of Papi’s Steakhouse, he doesn’t post, he doesn’t talk about me. He doesn’t say sh*t about me.”

Is Colby Covington a Crossdresser?

For the record, the UFC still conducts no-notice testing for banned substances, but instead of it going through the United States Anti-Doping Agency, the testing is now done through Drug Free Sport International.

Just ask Jon Jones.

As far as his comments about Colby Covington, is ‘Gamebred’ taking a page out of his former friend’s playbook and just saying some outlandish sh*t to snag a few headlines? Or is ‘Chaos’ regularly packing a G-string under his fight trunks?

We may never know. And to be honest, we probably don’t want to.

But if there’s one woman who knows the truth

Jorge Masvidal reveals $5,000,000 payday for fighting Kamaru Usman they gave into my demands

Former two-time undisputed welterweight champion, Jorge Masvidal has claimed he netted in excess of $5,000,000 for his efforts at UFC 251, despite suffering a decision loss to arch-rival, Kamaru Usman in the pair’s first title fight.

Masvidal, a promotional alum and a two-fight title challenger at the welterweight limit, is slated to make his return to combat sports at the beginning of June, taking on fellow organizational veteran, Nate Diaz in a 10-round professional boxing rematch.

Jorge Masvidal confirms he's unretired from MMA sends fans into raptures about UFC return

Departing the UFC following a fourth consecutive loss in a decision defeat to Gilbert Burns last year in his native Miami, Masvidal has since vowed to make a return to the promotion in search of one final run following his June clash with Diaz inside the squared circle.

Jorge Masvidal reveals huge payday for UFC 251 short-notice fight

Twice challenging for undisputed welterweight spoils – the most recent of which at UFC 261 in ‘The Sunshine State’, Masvidal suffered a thunderous second round KO loss to former pound-for-pound number one, Usman, however, claims he landed a lucrative payday for his efforts the first time around – in the region of $5,000,000.

“… I had to get paid,” Jorge Masvidal told VLADTV about accepting a short-notice fight with Kamaru Usman at UFC 251. “And I had to get paid very f*cking handsomely for doing this. So, they [the UFC] gave into all my demands that I had.”

“That’s one of the fights that I made the most money, period,” Jorge Masvidal explained. “Because we ended up settling at right under 1,300,000 pay-per-views [buys]. If I hadn’t struck that deal with the UFC, I wouldn’t have got nowhere near $5,000,000 – I would’ve sold the same amount and got nowhere near $5,000,000. And I would’ve just felt like I got taken advantage of, so the part of me – the business side of me, the prize fighter side of me was very much satisfied and happy.”

Jake Paul makes a sizeable offer to face Jorge Masvidal within the MMA ruleset.

Masvidal is currently booked to face Nate Diaz in a boxing match on June 1, roughly four-and-a-half years on from their BMF title match in the main event of UFC 244.

The bout will also be the first of several boxing matches Masvidal is set to compete in. The 39-year-old had retired following his fight against Gilbert Burns at UFC 287 but felt the urge to compete again, like many fighters.

Jake Paul calls out Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz

With the switch to boxing, Masvidal has also opened the door to being involved in ‘crossover’ boxing events, which has the chance of netting him a big paycheque.

The biggest one of these fights would come against Paul, who has managed to make quite the impression on the combat sports scene over the past few years. Paul has also faced several former MMA fighters, why draw the line at Masvidal?

Paul has even gone as far as say he would be willing to face Masvidal in an MMA fight. Paul had signed to PFL last year but nothing has been made official in terms of an actual MMA fight.

“The one thing I will say, they’re digging their own grave,” Paul said on his BS podcast. “I’m being so serious when I say that I want to fight them in MMA. Either Masvidal or Diaz in the PFL. $10,000,000 offer for either one of those guys. Again, they will literally hide behind the fact — Masvidal, ‘You can’t even box. What the f*** are you going to do coming over to MMA, bro? I’m f****** from Miami, Florida, bro. F****** f*** you, dude, don’t disrespect me you f****** jamoke.’ F****** bird brain, that’s what he hides behind.”

Paul would even call out former UFC champion Sean Strickland and rising contender Paddy Pimblett.

“Same with f****** Paddy [Pimblett] and Sean Strickland, all of these guys hide behind these crazy things, but still none of them have shown up to the table to talk any business about anything to make anything actually happen in a real fight, a real spar,” Paul continued. “Whatever it is. So the offer still stands there. I want either one of those guys in MMA.”
