The MMA universe was dealt some surprising news when lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov threatened to leave the UFC if they released his teammate Zubaira Tukhugov. Now it’s apparently time Nate Diaz sounds off on the Khabib teammate drama.

Tukhugov was one of Khabib’s teammates who climbed into the Octagon to scuffle with Conor McGregor after the Irishman was submitted by “The Eagle” at UFC 229. He was arrested but released when McGregor refused to press charges. But Tukhugov wasn’t out of the woods. UFC President Dana White said he and the other two assailants would never fight in the UFC again.

That didn’t stop Tukhugov from boasting that he ‘slapped McGregor as promised’ online. Tukhugov was then removed from his UFC Moncton match-up with McGregor’s teammate Artem Lobov.

Fear not, Nate Diaz has an idea to fix this mess. He tweeted to White this afternoon that they should let “Kabob’s” friend fight and release him instead:

An interesting take from the always-entertaining fan favorite. Diaz was set to return from an over two-year layoff to face Dustin Poirier at November 3’s UFC 230. That bout fell apart when ‘The Diamond’ pulled out with an undisclosed injury this week.

Diaz was removed from the NYC event as a result. He proclaimed he was ready to face Nurmagomedov for the UFC title. The youngest Diaz brother is often at odds with the UFC in their seemingly never-ending power struggle over money.

How that will factor into the Khabib drama remains to be seen. One thing is for certain, though. Diaz knows how to keep himself relevant despite not having a victory in the Octagon since March 2016.

There has been a never-ending string of opinions in the wake of Khabib Nurmagomedov’s ill-timed brawl following his UFC 229 main event win over Conor McGregor.

The UFC’s biggest-ever pay-per-view event last Saturday (Oct. 6, 2018) from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, was supposed to be ‘The Eagle’s’ crowning achievement. In one way it was, as he submitted former two-division champion McGregor. However, that potentially historic win was marred by his actions shortly thereafter.

Khabib leaped into the crowd to fight McGregor’s training partner Dillon Danis, inciting a wildfire of violence. Three of Khabib’s teammates then scaled the cage and assaulted the Irish superstar. The bad blood definitely stems from McGregor’s infamous Brooklyn bus attack, and that’s understandable.

However, UFC 229 provided the stoic Khabib with the opportunity to shut McGregor up in the Octagon. He did that. But his normally soft-spoken style was uprooted by his actions. One UFC champion believes Khabib should not have allowed McGregor’s disrespect to change his own actions.

That man is middleweight champion Robert Whittaker. “Bobby Knuckles” sent a well-liked tweet Khabib’s way containing a deep quote about respect:

A Good Point

The 185-pound ruler has a good point. Nurmagomedov spent the majority of the build-up to UFC 229 keeping his mouth shut even though he probably wanted to explode inside.

Khabib accomplished his ultimate goal and dominated McGregor from pillar to post. There was no need to stoop to his level and commit outside-the-cage violence. The commission presiding over UFC 229 is not impressed and admitted that in a recent statement.

Khabib and McGregor will both face a complaint from the NSAC for their parts in the melee. The champion’s situation seems to be a bit more dire as the commission withheld his purse. Dana White doesn’t believe the NSAC should keep his whole $2,000,000 or strip him of the title. Khabib’s punishment is very much up in the air.

He’s soared up the UFC pound-for-pound rankings in the meantime.

Khabib Nurmagomedov is on top of the mixed martial arts (MMA) world right now. He recently secured a massive fourth-round submission (watch full highlights here) over Conor McGregor in the main event of last weekend’s UFC 229 from Las Vegas. Khabib’s performance was by far the biggest of his undefeated career.

All is not perfect in his world, however. The Dagestani champion caused a chaotic scene when he jumped into the crowd to fight McGregor’s teammate Dillon Danis. To top it off, three of his teammates rushed the Octagon and got into it with McGregor. They were arrested but Mcgregor didn’t press charges.

That adds up to Khabib being on the sidelines for quite some time, and possibly even worse. He could conceivably be stripped of his belt and will be fined. The champion could have a lot of time on his hands as a result. And he might be able to spend more time with his family, something he chooses to keep under wraps unlike McGregor.

McGregor is often seen with longtime girlfriend Dee Devlin and their son, Conor Jr. The much quieter Khabib has obviously chosen a more secluded lifestyle.

Khabib’s father Abdulmanap says he’s going to punish his son tougher than the UFC does, but we see precious little from Khabib’s wife.

The undefeated lightweight king has yet to even reveal her name to the public. “The Eagle” has two children with his rarely-seen bride. They had a daughter in 2015 and a son in 2017. While her name is not known, they supposedly call their son Mohammed.

The couple lives in Makhachkala in the Republic of Dagestan. Khabib has often criticized McGregor’s absence from fighting due to the birth of his son. He claimed he never stopped training when his children were born.

We are 10 days away fro what is being called the biggest fight in the history of the UFC when Conor McGregor challenges Khabib Nurmagomedov for the undisputed UFC lightweight championship.

The match is also considered one of the biggest grudge matches in the history of the promotion following Nurmagomedov’s slapping of McGregor teammate Artem Lobov, which prompted the infamous bus attack prior to UFC 223.

However, according to McGregor’s striking coach Owen Roddy, UFC 229 will be all business for McGregor, and whatever personal animosity there is between the two gladiators, it cannot be classified as hate for a professional the regard of Conor McGregor.

“I think maybe the situation just got out of hand or something like that,” Roddy said in an interview with ESPN’s Brett Okamoto. “What happened happened. But I think when Conor fights anyone, he goes in there with the intention, like, he doesn’t look at it as (personal). He’s going in there to put the person away, no matter what. So that’s not only with Khabib, that’s with everybody.

“He’ll respect him afterwards, and he’ll give them the credit when it’s due after fights, like he’s done with the likes of Poirier. He’s talked very high about Poirier, and Diaz, and all of these fighters. And everyone that he’s fought, he’s given them credit. But when you’re in his way, he’s in there to put you away. So he’s like that with everybody.”

And what McGregor is consistently “like” to his imminent foes has been verbally abusive. And although McGregor dominated the microphone time and branded Nurmagomedov with one insult after another, Roddy does not believe it will make any difference in the way Nurmagomedov approaches the fight.

“No, not really, to be honest,” Roddy said when asked if he believed McGregor’s verbal attacks will provoke Khabib to stray from his game plan. “But if he does stand, it’ll be over very, very quickly, I believe. But I think Khabib will come in with the game plan he has for everybody, which is: shoot for dear life. And for me, that’s the only chance he really has. And he’ll have to stand. The thing is, you start standing. So he’ll have to stand. And if he’s there for an extended period of time, it’s very, very dangerous for him.”

Do you believe either Conor McGregor or Khabib Nurmagomedov will fight any differently at UFC 229 due to the animosity between them?
